Ed Bouchette's Steelers chat: 3.12.19

John Brown just signed with the Bills, Crowder is with the Jets.  Did the Steelers plan on participating in free agency at some point to get a WR or are they content to roll with what they have?  Right now they look a lot like a 5-11 team, and there really doesn't seem to be any urgency on their part to fill needs.
Ed Bouchette
2:20
I'll take that over-under on the 5 if you'd like. It is March 12. They kick off in about 6 months. Let's see what happens at least over the next 2 months.

Feels like Steelers got pennies on the dollar for AB, eh?
Ed Bouchette
2:21
It's not what they first thought they could get but then Brown did a good job of ruining his value on the market. At that, I thought they did OK getting a high 3 and a 5, which is virtually a low 2

With Jesse James now gone, do the Steelers need a legit number 2 tight end from the draft?
Ed Bouchette
2:22
Xavier Grimble is now No. 2 but they had a few on IR who could be interesting, Jake McGee and Ryan Malleck. They'll probably add another somewhere, draft or sign

In a recent PG article, it revolved around Tomlin winning back the team. Through this entire mess, Steeler leadership has maintained that Tomlin had not lost the team and there we no culture issues. Why would Tomlin need to win back a team that he "in their eyes" never lost?
Ed Bouchette
2:24
Because "they" did not write the column, Ron Cook did and he's certainly not the only one who thinks Mike Tomlin needs to run a sterner ship, whether true or not.

Hey Ed no one is talking around here about the moves the Browns are making. Olivier Vernon and Sheldon Richardson to go with Miles Garret. Yikes! Now the rumor is they will be drafting either Devin White or Devin Bush at Line backer.  They still have over 50 mill. In salary cap money to work with. No one's laughing them anymore!
Ed Bouchette
2:25
The Browns finally seem to have their ship together. And losing for so long, drafting so high for so long and having so much cap money is always a benefit for retooling. It just took them about 20 years and many coaches, GMs, owners and QBs to get it right.

Did Ben give the Steelers Brass an ultimatum-  “he goes or I go”?
Ed Bouchette
2:26
Not that I know of. AB took care of that ultimatum all by himself.

A 3rd and 5th-  what was all that “significant value” talk?
Ed Bouchette
2:27
You take what you can get and no one apparently offered more other than Buffalo and when Brown said he won't play for the Bills, the Bills caved and backed out.

I thought the Ramon Foster re-signing was bad. Your thoughts? Done to appease Ben?
Ed Bouchette
2:27
Ramon Foster is a good guard, a good teammate, a good leader and they didn't give him the farm. You people are funny. You want them to sign/keep good players and when they do, you grouch about it.

Saw many folks “blaming” you for Faneca not making the HOF.  Your take?
Ed Bouchette

There are 48 voters in there. I am one of them.

Will DuPree get a new contract or play out his 1 year 9.2 Mil option killing needed cap space?
Ed Bouchette
2:30
The problem with tagging and picking up fifth-year options for first-rounders is when you try to negotiate a multi-year deal, that's where they want to start with an average. I think the Steelers may try to sign Dupree longer term but he may just roll the dice and see if he can parlay this year into a massive deal in 2020 somewhere.

It's been 11 years  (2008 season) since the last Steelers Super Bowl win. Are we in the middle of another 25 year drought?
Ed Bouchette
2:31
It's only been 10, plus one month. They won in February, 2009.

Will Eli Rogers be re-signed, have his contract tolled like Shazier or sign elsewhere?
Ed Bouchette
2:31
He is UFA, can't toll his contract

There has to be more to the AB wanting out-  it feels like there are layers to it and only a handful of people really know the deal-  Ed would u tell us the scoop if you knew?
Ed Bouchette
2:32
We've written and spoken about what we know, and Antonio Brown played it out very publicly before the season ended and afterward. What else is there? He forced his way out and found new riches. God bless him.

Will the Steelers bring in another kicker for competition? I don't think the guy they brought in last year is a serious competition. He cannot kick the ball into the endzone on kickoffs. That's a major problem for our specialteams.

Kevin Colbert said it's possible they could add a third for camp. That's a lot, but what they hey.

Ben seems every bit as divisive as AB, the only difference is that BR has the backing of the FO and coach?

Tweets stating that Bell is a Raven are deleted and the account is suspended?  hacks?  IS HE A RAVEN OR NOT?!?!?

Hi Ed, thanks for doing the chat, do you think that Burns has any future with the steelers? He doesn't seem to be good enough to even be a bench player
Ed Bouchette
2:36
His status went into nosedive last season. They keep talking about his confidence. I'm not sure you regain confidence in your fourth NFL season. He's eligible for fifth-year option by May and there seems little chance they'll pick that up.

Do the Steelers take  into account a players agent when assessing who they may draft?
Ed Bouchette
2:37
No

Hry Ed. I'm in Tennessee.  Will you guys be at the draft. Would love to meet  yall.  Thanks!!!
Ed Bouchette
2:38
Few media who cover teams go to the draft and none of the decision makers for the teams go there. It's all done from their facilities in their own cities, which is where I will be

Draft priority ILB, RB, WR. Thoughts?
Ed Bouchette
2:38
I'd have to place CB above RB and WR
