Fantasy Baseball Chat With Brad Johnson

I have Joey Gallo. Drop for Ruf? Gallo probably gives more homers but with what average?
Brad Johnson
1:02
Oh, nononono. I really like Ruf but let's not take it too far.
Nate
1:03
Wait, what's the issue with Yaz?
Brad Johnson
1:03
He's exceptionally average.
And not quite a full time player
Jake
1:03
I know it’s early but has josh lowes plate discipline at the mlb level surprised you
Brad Johnson
1:04
No, discipline is part of the skill set here. He's not going to maintain a 4.8% O-Swing rate (outside the zone) or anything.
He's probably a little less disciplined than Cavan Biggio.
Cody
1:04
Adell or Andrew Vaughn?
Brad Johnson
1:05
Adell for me. I might have a different answer in a week.
Perfect challenge trade

What do you think of Senzel's bat?
Brad Johnson
1:05
He should be above average. Waiting and waiting and waiting for it to happen.

Have a young rotation that includes Logan Gilbert, Patrick Sandoval, plus Ian Anderson and Huascar Ynoa. Love the ceilings, but the Braves starters worry me -- should cut one of those latter two guys for a higher floor arm like a Chris Flexen?
Brad Johnson
1:06
I wouldn't
Flexen really doesn't have a predictable positive category
He got there just barely with ERA last season.
1:07
And I should say, he's probably a good bet for 10+ wins barring injury. So that IS a predictable positive.
But I'd expect like 11 W, 125 K, 4.25 ERA, 1.30 WHIP in 170 IP. That's... kinda bad for fantasy.

Drop Brantley for Ruf?
Brad Johnson
1:09
Now this... this is a bitter pill I might just swallow. It's bold. If you made this as a trade, people would yell at you. I do think it's pretty close to a push. The one caveat is we know Brantley will play when healthy. Ruf could have age-related decline or fall into a weird platoon on that crowded roster.
How's your batting average project?
Old Guy

If injuries keep Justin Steele in the Cubs rotation for a while, do you like him for fantasy upside?
Brad Johnson
1:10
I don't, but I'll be watching (a replay tomorrow)

What happens to Seattle's OF if/when Kyle Lewis comes back?
Brad Johnson
1:11
Best guess is one of Kelenic/JRod is optioned - whoever is struggling more. Or if they're both hitting, Lewis is the odd man. He's missed enough time to merit 100 PA in Triple-A.

Who do you think gets more saves for the Twins: Alcala, Pagan or Duffey?
Brad Johnson
1:11
My guess is Pagan (Hansel Robles flashbacks) with something like 11.
1:12
Of those 3, it should be Alcala. Of their actual arms, I'd want to use Duran or Thielbar.

who are some good targets when trading montas?
Brad Johnson
1:13
India, Bryan Reynolds, Varsho might be an easy buy after a couple bland games.
Jazz, Ketel, Correa
You're still looking big.
I usually try to trade apples-oranges as much as I can. It's easier to eek out a little extra value.
Stanley, Lord of Cupington

Fantasy baseball podcast question? Do you listen to any? Did one get you particularly into the fantasy side of the sport?
Brad Johnson
1:15
I spend the day writing. I don't have a commute. I play OOTP while I watch baseball. I just don't have enough slivers of attention for a podcast.
1:16
That said, I know the marketplace is saturated with a ton of great analysts. The big sites all do a great job of putting out a pro-grade product.
NBC, CBS, The Athletic - all great stuff.
Love the FanGraphs guys

same question about Tork. Do you give Vaughn the edge or Dalbec?
