Fantasy Baseball Chat With Brad Johnson

I see 13 names ahead of him I'd take *after* McClanahan today.
But... there are a couple after him (like Logan Webb) that I'd take first.
Moral of the story, I have him about SP9-14.

So unless Kwan starts stealing bases, he really doesn't need to be on a fantasy roster, right?
Brad Johnson
12:46
I don't want to suggest overcorrecting!
12:47
Keep riding the wave. He could still hit an empty-ish .310 with 10 HR, 10 SB, and 175 R+RBI
That's rosterable in almost any format.
12:48
That's a 90th percentile outcome fwiw. Mean/median's more in the .275, 8 HR, 8 SB, 110 R+RBI range

I’ve stashed quite a few pitchers on my IL: deGrom, McCullers, Kaprielian, Clevinger, Gray, and Heaney. How comfortable do you feel about at least a couple of those guys being useful sooner than later? And who of those is worth rostering long term (other than the obvious deGrom?) My league values IP/9.
Brad Johnson
12:49
McCullers and Clevinger are definitely the two most interesting options there besides deGrom
Sonny should be back in short order
If that's Jon, I'd just move on unless the league is very deep.

Mondesi is hitting .125. Should I be worried?
Brad Johnson
12:50
Oh yea, the original plan was for him to be a part-timer. He briefly nudged that aside, and now it's back to being Plan A.
12:51
The Royals are really crowded with above average position players.
Big Red Machine
12:51
Luzardo or Lauer rest of year?
Brad Johnson
12:51
Luzardo, but if you're a FO sub, I just wrote up Lauer as an add in today's column (oh yea, we moved from Thursday to Monday).

How long can the Nestor Cortez train keep rolling?
Brad Johnson
12:52
In terms of a 1.15 ERA, not long.
I don't see any reason Nestor Cortes: above average SP shouldn't remain a thing.
12:53
My buddy NotBurtReynolds wrote him up recently. https://fantasy.fangraphs.com/nestor-cortes-is-for-real/

Stay with Mondesi or swap with Peña? Mondesi could never really hit, but those SBs are so shiny
Brad Johnson
12:53
Pena!
Jump on that while you still can.

Muñoz over Mariano? Wow that’s bold
Brad Johnson
12:54
"Batty' is probably a better way to describe it. "Hyperbole" is another word.

12:54
Are the Carrasco and Kyle Wright breakouts legit?
Brad Johnson
12:55
Starting with Wright, it feels real even though I don't have a tidy explanation as to exactly what happened. I think, probably, many things happened. We do need to be careful about his early strength of schedule. It's a bunch of real dud lineups.
12:56
It's not really a breakout for Carrasco rather than a return to form. His fastballs are working enough for his offspeed stuff to play again. I'm... extremely wary. I'd probably sell high if I could (I didn't buy any shares).
12:57
My worry is based on career-best results on his four-seamer despite no surface-level changes in the pitch. I haven't done a deep dive to see if something's happening with seam-shifted wake or the other buzz words.
12:58
I usually let Eno or someone like him do that heavy lifting!
The Fonz
12:58
I'll take the under for Kwan at 175 Runs/RBI. Way under in fact.
Brad Johnson
12:58
Sure, you saw the mean/median I posted right after that, right?
Will the Thrill
12:58
Does Ketel Marte rebound from his slow start? Or would you recommend selling while his name value still carries weight
Brad Johnson
12:59
I'm holding personally. It's definitely been a weird start to the season for him.
We have to be mindful of how the CBA negotiations might have put certain guys more off balance than others.
1:00
Probabilistically, he'll likely be fine.

Why is it that Bellinger is still having trouble hitting letter high 95 MPH fastballs or higher and the Padres were throwing him hanging sliders or low pitches where he could hit them out? With all the video you would think these pitchers would see that.
Brad Johnson

I didn't see these Bellinger ABs, but I've always been struck by how many holes he has in his swing.
