Fantasy Baseball Chat with Brad Johnson

I don't think his value should be affected by this outing. You should try to sell him if he pitches well. Maybe for like Lance Lynn!
1:18
I'm just really down on Liberatore. It's a reliever profile because his stuff doesn't tunnel. He doesn't have a way to survive multiple times through the lineup short of having a lucky day.

Sell high on Ryan Noda?
Brad Johnson
1:19
Yea, I think so. The league seems overdue to make an adjustment. Passive hitters with high BABIPs are rare. That said, his power peripherals suggest he should have hit more HR to date. There's untapped upside too.
1:20
Again, it depends on what high means. He's 11th by wRC+
1:21
Does sell high mean JD Martinez or does it mean someone mediocre like Alec Bohm? You could make a case that Bohm should be more valuable than Noda, but I wouldn't want that sort of swap while Noda is running hot.

As sad as it is, with his arm issues, do you think it is time to drop Liam Hendriks?
Brad Johnson
1:22
I do. He already wasn't himself. Now he's probably looking at missing a month at minimum.

Have an opportunity to acquire via trade Helsley STL but I am concerned about what appears to be a time share with Gallegos.  Will Marmol continue to mis-manage his bullpen do you feel?
Brad Johnson
1:22
I don't know that they're mismanaging Helsley/Gallegos. They view both of them as firemen. They'll be used in this manner.

How ruthless are great fantasy managers in cutting bait on non-peforming but high draft pick players?  Do you ever worry about sending someone to the wire who will be instantly acquired by another manager?  Thanks.
Brad Johnson
1:24
It's a matter of playing style. One thing I preach is being different than the typical manager. If your league is aggro about waiver moves, be the manager who's patient. Most managers skew passive so aggression tends to pay well in those leagues.

Is there a scenario where Volpe gets sent down and Peraza gets called up?
Brad Johnson
1:25
I think so? The trouble with Peraza is that he looks more like a second division starter these days. Just not getting to the EVs you want to see from a starter with his profile.
1:26
I think there's some subtext to Volpe remaining with the big league club too. Perhaps he's a great clubhouse fit? Seems to be the case.
I always thought he would be slow to adapt to the Majors. Patience is merited.

COLO has brought up some youngsters, (Montes, Doyle and Montero again) but will they play? Or stick in the majors?
Brad Johnson
1:28
Using "prospect" loosely here with Montes and Montero. I think Doyle will play more often than not. The other two seem like bench guys with interesting traits.

Do you take on future picks in hopes of flipping those picks for players in the future>
Brad Johnson
1:30
My current leagues don't include in-season draft pick trading. I advocate for this - it's my belief that bad managers consistently overvalue draft picks, leading to greater league balance issues.
1:31
The weaker managers are already heavily disadvantaged. Nothing is worse than an irrelevant manager, affecting the top of the standings by trading good players for bags of beans.
1:32
Returning to your question, I don't think you can count on repeatedly profiting with such an approach. It's something worth monitoring.
1:33
Like, if you can get a second rounder for Mark Leiter or Adbert Alzolary, there's a pretty decent chance you can later use an early pick to grease through a much more meaningful player acquisition.
Part of opportunism is not overcommitting to these odd little side-tactics.

I desperately need dingers (and RBIs), but am in a good place with BA. Which sluggers should I target in a trade where I give up Luis Arraez?
Brad Johnson
1:35
Kyle Schwarber jumps to mind. You might even be able to get a second player depending on the sharpness and depth of your league.
1:36
Instead of me blindly guessing guys, investigate which teams might be most interested in improving their AVG at the expense of HR. Fit your offer to their roster.

Drew Rasmussen or Kyle Wright. Which SP will be back soonest and which is the better keeper for this season? Thanks for your all help this season!
Brad Johnson
1:37
I have both on a 20-team league (thankfully, a rebuild year)
1:38
I don't have insight as to which will be back first. Neither is imminent.
Rasmussen is the better pitcher imo.

Is Chris Sale worth holding onto in an IL slot if I've got other guys on the IL too? He looked good the last few starts but is it just foolish to assume he'll provide any real value down the stretch at this point?
Brad Johnson
1:39
This is another example of your roster/league/needs informing the decision. My instinct for 12-team mixed is to cut if you don't have an open IL slot.
I'll always opt to use roster spots over clinging to guys with uncertain projections.
Sale was already confusing when healthy

Is all hope lost for Joey Bart in 20 team dynasty?
Brad Johnson
1:40
I think so
He could late-bloom in a few years
Jose Miranda

Is he ever getting recalled again?
Brad Johnson
1:41
It'll come, but he has a 66 wRC+ in Triple-A. Julien is a flat-out better player than him, and he's also spent most of the season in the minors.
