Fantasy Baseball Chat with Brad Johnson

This is a fantasy chat - Tim asks me not to speculate on these sorts of things. That said, I will anyway :)
First, I have not heard credible rumors linking the Yankees to Ohtani.
1:32
I might suggest something like Jasson Dominguez, Oswald Peraza, and Chase Hampton as a starting point. A lot of folks don't know this yet, but Hampton's actually the most valuable piece in that hypothetical offer.
1:34
Long story short, I think it's going to take at least three high-probability future big leaguers and at least two of them should have All-Star ceiling.
The Angels are one of the weaker dev programs, so they probably don't really want a guy like Dominguez.
1:35
Even Peraza, he needs more work, and the Angels should know enough that they're not the ones to coax it out of him
Severino
1:35
Is Severino a buy low? Is he toast? AL only.
Brad Johnson
1:36
I think he's currently unusable. I won't rule out the possibility of a reinvention if only because ANYBODY can reinvent themselves in the current era. He does seem healthy and he's throwing hard. The stuff just doesn't work together. He needs to be shut down and moved to a pitch lab for however long it takes to find pitches that interact with each other.

Do you see AL Central teams being aggressive or passive at this TDL? Everyone expects CWS to sell something - Giolito and/or Lynn - but a Detroit could be a player either way depending on how the wind blows. And Cleveland and Minny seem to prefer inexpensive deals that don’t muss up their long term hold the line plans. I think both should be in on Bellinger, Goldschmidt discussions myself but…

The Twins shouldn't be ruled out. I know a couple guys there - they're a crafty org.
They haven't really found their identity (unless having high-profiled injured guys is an identity)\
1:39
but they're smart enough to bark up the right trees
1:40
The Ians are penny pinchers. They might sell Bieber while "contending."
1:41
Tigers were talking about buying a couple days ago. A bold idea might involve Skubal to STL for like Carlson, Burleson, and a third bat.
Pure hypothetical
I don't really see the Tigers in on Belli/Goldy
The Twins might go for Bellinger
1:42
Goldy is too pricey/old with Correa. They can't make multiple of those bets the way a team like the Phillies or Mets can.

Does Turang have any value ROS? How about 2024?
Brad Johnson
1:43
Not ROS, I think he needs an offseason to work on adjustments. Adding functional strength and the like.
He'll be worth investigating again in 2024
1:44
There's a 3 WAR player in there somewhere. One who's better fantasy than irl.

If the Angels are serious in their statements about their willingness to consider offers for Ohtani, could the Yankees offer a combination of O. Peraza, E. Florial, J. Dominguez, and W. Warren, to be "in the ballpark?"  If not, what modifications would you suggest?
Brad Johnson
1:45
That's not too far off what I suggested. Hampton is better than Warren. I think that gets them in through the first door, but I doubt they have an offer that actually wins Ohtani.
1:46
They could add Roderick Arias and Emmanuel Tejeda, perhaps, but the timing isn't right on that idea.
And again, the Angels know they aren't the ones to dev those guys.

NL only-Battling for first and keep hearing Snell and Hader mentioned in trade rumors.  Percent chance they get traded and IF traded is it for prospects or ML ready player?
Brad Johnson
1:47
Mostly answered this above. If they're traded, it'll be for guys Preller loved but missed. Could be anywhere from DSL to MLB.
Blackburn
1:47
Any interest in Paul Blackburn in AL only? (PS: Thanks for the chat!)
Brad Johnson
1:48
Not really. The upshot isn't there to risk the downside
If he's Paul Blackburn, Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher, then I might feel differently. But then he wouldn't be in the AL :)

Who starts 2024 as Rockies' closer? In particular, what chance do you give Justin Lawrence?
Brad Johnson
1:49
Lawrence has decent traits for Coors Field. Particularly the high GB rate. He's more of a good middle reliever than a closer.
1:50
It's a little early to be setting 2024 closer odds. And I often argue you shouldn't bother with Rockies closers anyway since they're usually pure frustration.
I'll WAG 10%

Hey Brad. In a dynasty league as my backup shortstop, would you rather have Abrams, Pena, or roll the dice with Winn who I'm guessing will be Cardinals shortstop next year?
Brad Johnson
1:50
I'd feel very comfortable with Pena, especially if it's not OBP.
1:51
Winn might have a little more upside, but Pena is high floor with his own share of breakout potential.

Does Pfaadt make it back to the majors this year? If so, do I want him on my roster? He still has a ton of potential right, if not this year then next? Any chance he is involved in a trade for a better pitcher?
Brad Johnson
1:51
Yes, Pfaadt is still a valuable dynasty target as far as pitchers go.
