Pablo Lopez the surprise starter of the year? Especially with all those Ks.
Brad Johnson
1:49
Maybe! I think the surprise is his shoulder didn't have its yearly tantrum
I'll nominate Justin Steele. I didn't see him coming as more than a workaday type.
1:50
Zach Eflin deserves a shout, though I've always loved him. He's pitched well for years at one of the worst venues for his pitcher type.
Moving to a pitcher-friendly venue felt like an easy win.

Seems like he’s struggling with men on base and that’s why I was thinking the clock has hurt him.
Brad Johnson
1:50
Perhaps!
Roster expansion
1:51
MLB teams would rather manipulate rosters using the IL, taxi squad, and other roster tricks. You’re 100% about it being used as a bargaining chip, despite being in teams best interest.
Brad Johnson
1:51
Yea, it's one of those situations where a candid front office guy would clamor for it, but the owners think they should get significant concessions to add 30 more league minimum contracts.
Astros concerns

Last two weeks SB chasing in an AL only roto - Straw or Florial
Brad Johnson
1:52
I think you have to go with Florial. Straw's playing time is low these days

Championship week - only get 4 adds...I have a full lineup today if Yelich starts but thinking of adding Canha if not. Also have McMahon as my only 2B with a bad schedule and was going to rotate Morel in there when he faces lefties. Basically is ~2 games of Canha with no replacement better than ~3 games of Morel instead of McMahon?
Brad Johnson
1:54
If I understand this right, I'd probably go with Canha for the flexibility he provides. He also let's you chip at 5 categories whereas Morel tends to be power-binge or bust.

A couple keep pr cut decisions: Tyler Anderson and Andrew Heaney, in a deep league where theyre under contract and it costs 50% to cut them. Do you think those two have any value in 2024?
Brad Johnson
1:55
I have more hope for Heaney than Anderson.
In this situation, approach it the way real clubs treat an option.
If Heaney is a $10 contract, then it's a $5 net decision. If you would pay $5 for Heaney, you keep him. If you would not, you cut him.

Any scouting reports for Austin Gauthier? Undrafted but his walk/strikeout stats are some of the best in LA’s system.
Brad Johnson
1:57
I don't have much. Basically, an advanced approach, questionable impact, very old for his levels.
Games are fun
1:57
Hi Brad, S. Perez is hurt. Like Naylor or Garver this week? Also would you roll with Butto or Blackburn for two starts this week? Thank you!
Brad Johnson
1:57
Love Garver
And I'd go for Blackburn over Butto

Still an SP1 next year? That ERA is so high.....
Brad Johnson
1:58
He's my early pick for best rebound candidate. He'll likely go outside the top 25 SP.
His free agency will be instructive. I wonder if he'll accept the QO.
1:59
He might instead opt to pitch one year with a club like the Rays or Dodgers. Someone with a reputation for maximizing their pitchers' results.
Or he might still prefer going long term and possibly leaving $60MM on the table.

Who knows! Should be interesting.

Can only keep 5. Luis arraez, nolan arenado, acuna, Witt, bichette, Alonso, fried.
Brad Johnson
2:00
As always, I advise putting off keeper decisions. That said, easy Acuna, Witt, Bichette to start.
2:01
From there, decide if you want a pitcher locked in. I'd go Alonso and Arenado over Fried personally, but I could see preferring Alonso+Fried.
Cut Arraez so hard.

Hi Brad, love the peek into this new (for me) world.  What is streaming?  Thanks!
Brad Johnson
2:02
Streaming is the practice of turning one (or more) of your roster spots into a revolving door. It's usually applied to starting pitchers. You see which guy on the waiver wire is facing a bad lineup and pick him up for the day.
2:03
I like to use my streaming spots to mix and match. On short-schedule days (Mon/Thurs) I'll grab a bat who contributes to categories I need. I'll snag the odd SP if I really like the situation. The rest are used on relievers.

Austin Gauthier old for his level? He was signed in 2021 and moved a level every full season. 2 seasons of 100 + walks. Dodgers don’t rush players. That’s why your top prospect lists bust at high %

A 24-year-old split between High- and Double-A is OLD. There's no other way to describe it.
2:05
It's still fair to say he's advanced as fast as could have been expected. But he started way behind the curve, and that colors expectations.
The top prospects in Double-A are mostly 20 and younger these days.
