the double-edged sword of fame. first, its clearly not mike's best art, but he will be forever known and associated with this sale price now... so if there a little grumbling there, or frustration perhaps? until at least other pieces reach similar sale prices...other hand is, is it better to not have the sale and the recognition?
seems like ya gotta take the spotlight, even if its got a bit of a downside...

Nick P who is your favorite old school artist?
Chuck Costas
1:30
@Brett...yes, I agree this is a bit of a double-edged sword. But I don't think this is only thing Mike will be known for, even if he is the "$3M man" moving forward.

re: OA becoming like slab collecting: becomes tougher to buy just because you like something as prices increase at this clip, especially for newer investors that don't have an established collection to sell/trade
Joao Antunes

It feels that if you had to choose well your pics now you have a double effort, not only choose even better but be ultrafast :)
Andy K
1:30
Chuck do you like any new artists or are you strictly vintage?
Chuck Costas
1:31
@Andy...My focus is mainly vintage artists, but there are occasionally newer artists who catch my eye. Such as Tedesco, Goran Parlov...

Super excited to see another pod so soon! Keep them coming, Felix!

@Chuck thanks!

Chuck, great interview. I know counterfeiting in the prop market is a real thing that you have to deal with at PropStore...as OA prices get higher, any worry there? Or too one-of-a-kind and tight knit of a hobby to worry about it?
Chuck Costas
1:33
@Chuck...Re: movie props, it has been and will always been a concern. And a barrier to entry. That's why I wanted to work at a place like Prop Store, which takes research and authentication very seriously.

Not as worried about it for comic art expect for commissions/unpublished art.

@ Nick Pitarra hope to see the next drop of the art of your new book soon, seems amazing!
Bob McGann

Sorry, that question on counterfeiting is from me. -Bob

Zeck did far better work on MoKF and many other titles while SW was mediocre almost by design, and yet people chase that for the Key element instead of pursuing quality. It's nice that the EC artists are beloved solely for quality with no fealty to keys and false market stimuli.

Bob!
Chuck Costas
1:35
@Robert...even Mike would admit that SW wasn't his best work.
He always loved Gene Day as an inker, btw.
Joe L
1:35
@Chuck… If I remember correctly, you started collecting from an early age, correct?
Chuck Costas
1:36
@Joe L...yes, I was 14 (1985).
Ben H
1:36
Chuck, Yes to Parlov!  Anyone know where to pick up his original pages?
Felix Lu
1:36
@Ben...he's got a rep. You can find him on CAF!

chuck, ...mike will be known for other art, for sure... cause there are so many better pieces and overall the quality of his art is so superlative to the era and career spanning.

but thats why i think he has the right to be a bit frustrated. we all know what SW is/was.

first time in a chat in a loooong time.  hi guys!
Joe L
1:37
@Robet Jung I understand what you’re saying, but I don’t think it’s totally “false market stimuli” to want a specific page for reasons other than the anesthetics of the art. Sometimes it’s just really cool to have an origin page, or something like that.

Chuck, when you're putting on these shows where you're lending out some of the best works in OA (and stuff near to your heart), do you get worried about them? How do you mitigate that?
Chuck Costas
1:38
@Bob...I make sure there's insurance policies on all the art I lend. I do think it's the greater good to lend these things, and that helps from worrying too much about it.
Nick Pitarra

Thanks, Joao! I’ll be sending it to Felix in about 2-3 months. Also, I agree with  Chuck , Goran Parlov is a modern master, love his work.

funny, I finally got a great Parlov piece, I follow him on fb and he is a character

@ Felix thinking in adding up another artist to Felix team? I imagine you have a lot of requests and have your amazing artist to give you some inside recommendations, or did you reach the limit?
Felix Lu
1:39
@Joao...I actually have several artists waiting in the wings...but I only add when the time is right.

@Felix, Hi folks, I'm on a short break at work lol, glad to be here!
Bob McGann
1:39
Chuck, I'll speak for Malvin and myself and say thank you for getting Mike to do those cover recreations in 2000.
Chuck Costas
1:40
@Bob...I'm glad people are enjoying them. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like Mike will be doing any more.

Haven't been able to listen to the podcast ep yet, but will tonight. Personally, I think this Zeck page will be a record for quite awhile, with risk assets coming off unlimited risk premia with the Fed finally in a hike cycle.
Chris S
1:41
Just picked up a nice Parlov myself
Chuck Costas
1:41
@Jason...I agree. I think this sale will stick for a while.

Of course, as soon as I say that, the next sale will be $5M.
Chris S
1:41
Chuck your Zeck collection is at the same
malvin
1:41
@chuck, and as holders of cover recreations, I am glad he isn't doing more :P
Chris S

Chuck your Zeck collection is all at once inspiring and depressing ;)
