Felix - interesting to hear your insight on the Sw8 buyer. Curious if we’ll see them go public at any point
Felix Lu
1:42
@Rob...just something I heard second hand...take with grain of salt!
Chuck Costas
1:42
@Chris S...thank you...the culmination of 35 years of work!
Ben H
1:42
Felix, thanks! I’ve been to Goricki’s site, but the Parlov offerings have been limited and it doesn’t appear that it’s been updated for a while.  Is stuff all gone, or is is he just not releasing a lot?
Felix Lu
1:43
@Ben...both. I got mine directly from Parlov at NYCC a few years ago.
Rob R
1:43
Salt taken. Still interesting!

Andy, old school I really like Joe Kubert and Moebius (obviously), I feel like Joe and Jean drew really organically, but with different finishes. Modern guys like Chris Mooneyham really riff off of Joe, I feel like there is a big hole their, many modern artist do the Moebius  think or Alex Toth thing, but Mooneyham is the guy who seems to be picking up the torch from Joe stylistically speaking. So , I’ll say , Joe Kubert, a guy I don’t mention a lot.

Hey all first time in the live chat.
Joe L

@Chuck… wow, 14 is very young! I started as a very poor 20 yr old college student. Are you concerned that there’s a much higher financial barrier to entry these days? Felix does a great job with offering some very affordable pieces from time to time, but those go soooo fast.

i wouldnt have put joe k as a big influence for you nick, thats cool insight.
Chuck Costas
1:44
@Joe...I believe there will always be entry points for comic art (such as Felix). But it would be harder for me to join this hobby if I were to focus on vintage artists these days. So yes, that's tougher.

@Chuck, I have not had a chance to listen to the interview yet, but very much looking forward to it! In terms of GI Joe art teams, what is your opinion on Bright/Emberlin? (The did my favorite issue 103.)
Chuck Costas
1:45
@Justin...I stopped reading Joe after Mike left the book with #65. Sorry, I've never read any of the Bright run.
JasonK
1:45
@jason wood I think you underestimate how fantastically wealthy some geeks have gotten in crypto which I believe to be the driver here
Mike H
1:45
I think there has been a significant “leveling up” of the hobby in general. I remember a few years back listening to Vincent Z talk about what he was seeing. That said, there is still great art available at all entry points.

The whole slab mentality makes collecting a little less fun for me... but if the spec focus stays on first appearances (or any random page from the first appearance issue?) and there are still great examples out there that stay more affordable, it feels like there's still space for folks at lots of different budget levels. Hoping the crazy money stays focused on 1st apps and "historic" stuff, and that the first appearance fixation stays a running joke for my collecting circle
I never thought I'd be monitoring fed interest hikes and crypto prices with how they'd affect my OA collecting, that's for sure

will the sw 8 page also be remembered for being the piece that from this point forward, all signifigant pieces of comic art will go straight to auction now?
Chuck Costas
1:46
@Brett...no, but I think it will be used as a point of reference for many. But there are advantages to private deals that will keep things out of auction.
Chris S
1:47
Agree, not at all interested in 1st apps
Ian St
1:47
There is an entry point, but it may be based off of personal happiness I think vs large value swings.
Jason Wood
1:47
@jasonk. entirely possible, particularly if a true grail page is unearthed b/c of the inflation. I just think the Sw8 page was such an outlier to even other recent inflated sales, that it'll last for awhile. Records are meant to be broken though. I wish I had the capital base to be a player in that arena.
Mike H
1:47
@jasonK I think the crypto piece is a bit of an urban legend to be honest. The bigger shakers this past year are guys like Dinesh.
JasonK
1:47
@casey agreed. But a rising tide lifts all boats. Some of the other stuff will be relatively cheap but everything will be more expensive. Get the cheaper stuff now
JustinTopages
1:47
@Chuck, okay thank you :)
Mike H
1:47
@casey a Happy to oblige. Please send all first appearance Art my way. :)

Post the SW8 auction result, that Wolverine page from IH is looking like a very smart buy. But it seems that will be a record that stands for a while. Can't think of another interior page that remotely compares to the black suit/Venom origin.
Mike H
1:48
It’s funny to me that different factions of the hobby joke about each other.
Casey A
1:48
@JasonK I'm trying! joy
JasonK
1:49
@mike h don't disagree but 3m for a panel page isn't someone who's been in the hobby and likely not your typical hedge fund billionaire either. That's my guess
Pat L
1:49
yay i made it!  early chat
Felix Lu
1:49
Hey Pat...another spirited chat...people love talking about $3M art lol
Jason Wood
1:49
Dinesh fascinates me. Bad Idea has been...interesting. And I'm not sure Dinesh has the keenest eye for art. But it may not matter if he and his cohort continue to reset the market.
Felix Lu
1:50
@Jason...but the art itself isn't necessarily the priority, so hard to judge his eye...
Mike H
1:50
@jasonk I am not so sure to be honest.
Dan T
1:50
Considering he just spent $1.3MM on a Bored Ape NFT, maybe Bieber bought the SW8 page.
MikeH
1:50
@jason wood I think Dinesh represents much of the logical evolution of the hobby to be honest.
Felix Lu
1:51
@Mike H...please explain/elaborate...
Simon B
1:51
@MikeH I surely hope not
JasonK
1:51
@mike h can't be sure without knowing the buyer of course but it's not a coincidence this result happened shortly after heritage began accepting crypto for some auctions
