@jasonK but I thought Heritage already confirmed (through Felix and other channels) that the Sw8 purchase was not paid for with crypto
Felix Lu
1:52
@Jason...I don't think Barry was definitive about it either way...just that he didn't know of anyone who had paid with crypto yet...

ive seen some posts about the crypto money boogiemen, and belly aching about the higher prices. But all in all , it’s a super exciting time, and has to be putting us in a better place market wise with our own modest collection. I very much agree with the rising tides sentiment.

@ Felix Most of the entrants into the hobby that I know care about context and significance. That because related hobbies have trained this for years. Rookie cards in baseball, First Appearance in comics, shoes, video games, etc.
Felix Lu
1:53
@MikeH...is OA art? Or collectible? Or both?
MikeH
1:53
@felix just because this group places value on context doesn’t negate their appreciate of style. It doesn’t have to be either/or.
Felix Lu
1:54
@MikeH...not either/or. But more importance placed on slab variables.
Jason Wood
1:54
That's what I love about this hobby. I have zero jealousy in my heart for these big ticket purchases. Would I love to be in the mix? Sure. But I'm still thrilled haggling 100 Bullets pages from other CAF members and beautiful sequential sequences from Felix' artists in a drop
MikeH
1:54
Both.
Are shoes Fashion or collectibles or both? Depends on the owner.
Felix Lu
1:56
I would agree. So none of this surprises me. Everyone came in as a comic collector/fan, so it's natural that what was important to us in comics, will also be important to us in OA. But, not every comic collector/fan was an investor. So the investment mentality is where things may diverge a bit.
JasonK
1:56
@jasonw didn't know that. I stand corrected if so but if I had a huge crypto bag it would make a whole lot of sense to easily diversify without selling and cashing out to fiat

Dinesh is cool, I have no beef with him, but his collecting philosophy seems to be “buy the obvious big targets and have more money than the other people who want them”. Nothing wrong with that, and there are worse plans to have, but it just seems like he wants a DK page without really appreciating what DK really did for comics in the 80’s.

I actually went through my comic art want list just to make sure any of the art I'm after doesn't have any first appearances. I breathed a sigh of relief
Felix Lu
1:57
@Simon B...haha! A longtime collecting friend was telling me that he just didn't understand the new school...I told him all he needed to understand is that he should be happy they didn't care about what he cared about!
JasonK
1:57
@jason wood exactly. There's plenty of fantastic irreplaceable "lower profile" art out there
MikeH
1:57
@felix - another way to think about it is the older, established collectors weight on artists whereas the incoming crew cares about characters.
Felix Lu
1:58
@MikeH...and what drives this care about characters? Seems to be very MCU-focused. ($$$)

i'd say definitely art.  if the owner is a collector, it is a collectible.  if the owner is an speculator/investor it is a monetary vehicle.
Pat L
1:58
@Nick Pitarra - did you get my money recently lol

@MikeH James Jean did some very cool designs for Prada...handbags, dresses. And in fact a gigantic mural of his work adorned the Prada building in Tokyo.

I have take a unique approach to trying to collect as a new collector and have a few pieces that I found importance with because they remind me of what the artist has deemed important to them regarding their personal inspiration, or what I consider them to be connected to. I will have a difficult time keeping up with keys, but find inspiration with this method.
MikeH
1:58
@felix Think if it this way, did your recent sale of the Miles as Venom cover go high because of the artistic element or character involved?
Felix Lu
2:00
@MikeH...definitely character. But at least it's also a great Ryan Stegman cover!

I'm certainly going to get as much as I can for Ryan, rather than be blind to what's going on. As much as I'm sure flippers would rather I was.
Pat L
2:00
@Joe L - I think that's my issue too - like not getting the art to appreciate the art per se
Simon B
2:00
@Jason I don't have any jealousy/envy for the big ticket items either, just nervousness that I'll be priced out of the art I want
Jason Wood
2:00
I'm a "first appearance" guy, conceptually. But never enough to pay premiums for them.
Pat L
2:00
DC art hopefully will remain cheap! lol
Simon B
2:01
@Felix exactly. let me play in my own little corner and keep your first appearance of wolverine's left nut sac away from me
MikeH
2:01
Mainly because DC characters aren’t as relatable. They are gods vs Marvel with the everyday guy who becomes powerful. It’s a fantasy.
Joao Antunes
2:01
@ Felix by the way I have a feeling you might win some oscars tonight on CAF :)
Felix Lu
2:01
@Joao...I don't know! So much good art!
Ron Lim

If you just buy art you like, you'll be fine.

With regards to crypto and NFTs and the like, I think it's all bullshit. I'm loving how crypto has collapsed these last few months... its no better than wagering on stocks at this point.

And NFTs, when you see Gwenyth Paltrow, Jimmy Fallon, Paris Hilton, and Justin Bieber all jump on board, well, you know its doomed.
Joe L
2:01
@MikeH, there’s definitely some truth to that, but I would point to some of the complete issue sales Felix has had of some amazing artists’ non-Big 2 work as an example that some new collectors due value art for art’s sake.
MikeH
2:02
@robert jung I have to look that up! Sounds interesting.
Joe L
2:02
So is BKV just NOT going to show up today?! Very rude of him ;p
Felix Lu
2:02
@Joe...he's here, he's just posting at "MikeH":P
JasonK
2:02
@mike h personally that's it for me. I'd love for collectors/buyers to appreciate the art form more than the comic like collectability as I believe it should be a respected visual art medium just as great as fine art. For the time being, that helps me as a collector as it makes the stuff I like in general cheaper, relatively
Casey A
2:02
I also don't think buying "important" pieces means that you don't have an eye, or that you won't appreciate the hidden gem page... just that you have the funds to nab the big one
MikeH
2:02
@felix I would too! You newsstand the evolution. It may not be your choice of tea turning a blind eye to the winds of change doesn’t stop the wind from blowing.
