Felix Comic Art Chat (2/16/21)

My commission wish list for the year would be Ottley and Dragotta. And Immonen of course but I’m sure he’s swamped.

I’m at work but will monitor the chat in the background

2:37
Felix what do you mean you’re getting into crypto art? An entirely new venture or having your comic stable create pieces?
Felix Lu
2:38
@Jason...crytoart is just another vehicle for artists to sell their work. So the latter. My function is to serve the artists I rep...this is another way of doing that.
Artless (Mike) Artmore

One of my favorite comic artists does his best work digitally, and it's an obvious speed up and less of a hassle for most artists to work digitally, but I'm glad some comic artists continue to produce physical pages!
Felix Lu
2:39
@Artless...our focus remains physical pages! So no worries!
Will_K
2:39
@felix - can you say how the DC implosion is affecting your clients and/or artists that you know ?
Felix Lu
2:40
@Will K...I don't have a lot of guys at DC, and the ones who are, are mainstays. So no effect on us. Regardless, we want a strong, healthy DC for the sake of the comics industry,
Dylan C
2:40
Hey @felix, will just list all my questions at once.  Haha. DWJ Commission list for ‘21? Will Stuart ever do commissions? From your hint on UF4 buyer, if I make a guess, will you confirm? 😀
Felix Lu
2:41
@Dylan...unlikely for DWJ. Unlikely for Stuart. Share your guess...but I will neither confirm nor deny (if you get it right!).
stefanomjr
2:41
There's a DC implosion?
Morgan H
2:41
Felix, do you have artists on your roster that would prefer to do their work digitally, but choose to do it traditionally because of the supplemental income it provides them? Should we expect to see any of your artists make the switch should this prove successful?
Felix Lu
2:43
@Morgan...most of the artists consider digital just another tool, with the end product still being paper. I don't anticipate anyone make the switch. Nick Dragotta only worked digitally for EAST OF WEST in service of publishing deadlines...he would tell you that in a perfect world, he would have drawn it all on paper.
Will_K
2:43
@stefanomjr - DC staff cuts... major re-org
Dylan H.
2:43
@Felix do you think Ramon Villalobos will be able to open a list this year?
Felix Lu
2:43
@Dylan H (just realized there are 2 Dylans here!)...no idea, sorry!
Matt H
2:43
I feel like such an old man by not “getting” digital art. Monoprints aren’t my thing but totally understand why folks want them. Purely digital remains a head scratcher for me though. Although I suppose you can do some interesting things in the way it’s viewed though
Felix Lu
2:45
@Matt H...my own preference is traditional art on paper. Not even close. But as I always say, the market is the market. And it there's going to be a thriving market for comic art NFTs, we want to help create it.
Dylan C
2:45
@felix no fun if you neither confirm nor deny then hehe. How about confirming an initial? 😜
Felix Lu
2:45
@Dylan...just make your guess and we'll see!
Dan T
2:45
I'm not a fan of the idea of monoprints, but then I think about how I'll consider prints in the Urban Art auctions on Heritage, so wouldn't a comic art monoprint be conceptually a better idea, if physical art isn't available?
Felix Lu
2:46
@Dan T...sure, but a "monoprint" is still a print. It's not original art. So don't try to present it as original art.
stefanomjr
2:46
@Will_K gotcha!
Dylan C
2:46
@felix, first name starts with a D?
Felix Lu
2:47
@Dylan C...maybe;)

Hi, everyone. I was wondering if you would mind if I sort of hijacked the chat for something personal. I recently impetuously overbid on a piece of European comic art which I have paid for but has not been sent out. I am now getting alarm bells about its provenance. Would you mind if I posted it and asked what everybody thinks about it? I don't want to say who it is by because it is not a typical work by this artist. I wanted to know if anyone recognised who it was by and also if it was genuine. Let me know, seriously, Felix if this is out of order.
Felix Lu
2:47
Hi Simon...go ahead, hope we can help!
Dylan C
2:47
@Felix, also, Dragotta list opening for ‘21.
Felix Lu
2:48
@Dylan C...unlikely. It's full-steam ahead on his next project, which doesn't leave much time for commissions.
Dylan C
2:48
@felix, ok I didn’t get a no on that guess. So I’ll just assume I’m on the right track
Felix Lu
2:48
@Dylan...you didn't get a yes, either:P
Mikail
2:48
Afternoon all!
Dan T
2:48
@Felix - agreed, but if I'm sitting here with the monoprint of a comic art page that hits the nostalgia bone 20 years from now, isn't that better than a ###/150 print?
Felix Lu
2:49
@Dan T...it's not better (to me), just more expensive. I'm good with printing out a copy and hanging that instead. A print is a print to me, no matter the edition size.

I recently saw in an NFT chat a guy talking about printing out an NFT onto aluminium and then putting the wallet keys on the back and putting it into a sealed frame, so if you wanted to sell/move the NFT to another wallet you’d need to break the frame
Felix Lu
2:50
@Chris...to me, that totally defeats the purpose of an NFT. Also, the digital asset guys like their assets to be...digital.
Francis
2:50
I mean i think what it comes down to is how you want to define your marker of ownership
2:51
Some will want a 1/1 print
Others will be fine with the right code
