Felix I agree with you.  I personally dont see the attraction of owning a piece of digital art.
Felix Lu
4:35
@Tobin...everyone knows I love DARK KNIGHT RETURNS art, right? Well, if someone offered DKR art to me, but as an NFT, I would politely decline. Give it to someone else, because it would be totally wasted on me. Zero interest.

Hi everyone

Hello
Francis
4:35
@RobertColeman that is what i was most afraid of. It seems too easy to make a counterfeit NFT with the right image give or take. Heck there was a really good art fraud movie on Netflix that nailed this all to well
Fabrice Stroun

Hello. Everyone. One of the things I don’t quite understand is the reluctance to consider traditional prints of digital art as legitimate art objects.
Prints by “fine artists” (not a value judgmen heret, just people who make art specifically to be hung on walls) have been considered as importing bodies of work within artists’s careers for centuries.
No one thinks its weird when photographers sell limited signed printing of their work. Why is there such a resistance to this within the comic art collecting community ?
Felix Lu
4:38
@Fabrice...Prints are art objects. But they aren't, in our hobby, considered "original art". There's an established distinction between something that's a copy, and something that's hand-drawn. Prints are akin to posters in our hobby. I don't expect that to change any time soon.
Malvin
4:39
@Fabrice, maybe its because the hobby started with people collecting originals and not just the comic, a print is only a step up from a mass produced comic in some eyes
Rob R
4:39
@Fabrice I wonder if it's because there's already a lot of printed collectible media in the comic hobby? It is an interesting question though. Monoprints definitely have seemed to gain some interest lately

Not interested in "owning" digital art via nfts. I do appreciate that they favor artists, but I'll keep buying paper with pencils and inks on it... Thanks Felix!
Malvin

what is Felix going to do about DCs response to NFTs though, its not like he can tell DC what to do :P
Felix Lu
4:40
@Malvin....what am I going to do? Nothing! Was never going to offer DC art as NFTs anyway. So as of now, this does not affect us at all.
Francis
4:40
If there is one thing I have learned watching Crypto, Comics, Pokemon Cards, Stocks, Stonks, Coins, Currency, you name it, etc. there is always another gold rush tied to IP and art. If not NFTs now, there will always be something
Victor
4:40
I was disappointed to learn that the ability to pay royalties to the creator on sales was tied to the platform and not intrinsic to the NFT.  Do you think this will turn away artists?
Felix Lu
4:41
@Victor...yes, as it turns out, the royalty bit was oversold. Needs to become cross-platform to be truly relevant.
Andy K
4:41
DC didn't care when it was $200 a page hah
Francis
4:41
@RobR the reason DC is messing themselves is they already licensed the Batman Black and White and Harley Black and White and Red statue lines for NFTs.
So I can see how they are in the quagmire right now
Andy K
4:41
I'm hoping greedy people make 5 billion NFTs and drive the price down to 1c so I don't have to ever hear about it again
Felix Lu
4:42
@Andy K...there will be a correction. Inevitable. Speculators will take a (deserved) hit. Will it be enough to crash the whole system, though? IMO, doubtful.

All speculation, but I think NFT of some form could be the future of comics.
Felix Lu
4:44
@Rob R...publishers are looking into that possibility now. Everyone tangentially related to comics is exploring. I've heard from show organizers who are looking to create NFTs as part of show packages. Overnight, it's seemingly everywhere.
Hassan Thalji
4:44
I am one of those who also don't understand the appeal of NFTs but then some people might not understand my love for original art and back issues.
Felix Lu
4:45
@Hassan...indeed. I think NFTs are goofy as hell, but I do understand the basic collecting impulse. However, right now, it's more about speculation/flipping than collecting. Certainly not about the actual art. IMO, as always.
Francis
4:45
I feel right now Social Media is trying to shoot everyone in the face with money. You have reddit and millennials pumping stocks, crazy rappers spending fortunes on Pokemon cards, stories of people going all in on NBA top shot or Tesla, the fact is in an economy still recovering, you have this immense panic more than ever as people trying to find the next gold rush moment
Felix Lu
4:45
@Francis...a lot of people are going be learning hard lessons soon enough.
Francis
4:45
Fun side note. If anyone wanted to see what BossLogic's original HAND DRAWN art looks like, https://www.comicartfans.com/gallerypiece.asp?piece=1711028

Hi Felix.  Hi everyone.
Robert Coleman
4:46
Picasso and Dali sold a LOT of prints while they were alive and many of them are very desirable and valuable today. Not as rare as their one-off paintings and sculptures, but still very legitimate works of art. And not unique.
Felix Lu
4:47
@Robert...right, that's what Fabrice is saying. It just hasn't translated to comic art. I think another reason is that original art is relatively plentiful, compared to fine art. There are 20 pages a month. Compared to a much smaller number of works in a fine artist's career.
Ben H
4:47
Felix, were you involved in JJs Slingshot NFT the other week?
Felix Lu
4:48
@Ben...no, I was not. I'm only involved in James' work to the extent that I'll get some small things I can sell to collectors. He's a special case!
Francis
4:49
Look if some digital centric artists want to do monoprints, be my guest. The way i see it. Original hand drawn published art is the ":gold" of the hobby. "Monoprints" , based on their quality, are like the silver or bronze.
Tariq
4:49
@Felix I agree that the underlying tech for NFTs & Cryptoart isn’t going away, just like cryptocurrency isn’t going away. Blockchain is here to stay and will disrupt a lot of things, including art. But there is something pure and compelling about holding a piece of paper with hand-drawn pencils and inks from an artist. Hard to replace that feeling with digital!
Felix Lu
4:50
@Tariq...I felt this going into researching NFTs, and I believe it even more strongly now: It will all come back to paper. The actual physical art is what will still matter in the end. Cryto guys are trying to make NFTs a thing...but there's no replacing that feeling, as you say.

Hey all, We live in interesting times for sure. This will all be interesting to watch, and of course hindsight will be 20/20 for how NFT/crypto plays out.
