@Mike...yes, I meet all the artists in person, first, to make sure that we'll vibe well. So far, so good! All great people.

Otherwise, as a fan, I've had good experiences and bad experiences when meeting artists. In the end, it's about the art, and I've had to learn to separate the two.

as someone who relies on mail away commissions, it’s been great being able to see the artists interact online virtually, Michael Walsh did a cool stay at homecon couple weeks back and it was great! And DWJ Instagram art sessions are always awesome!

I met Tradd Moore at last year's HeroesCon. I can vouch that he is absolutely lovely to talk to

@felix @Jason  Yes, kinda local is right...I split my days between Berkeley and Chicago, but since the pandemic, Chicago won the arm wrestle and I'm in the Windy City for the time being...

It's always nice to meet artists, but I never know what to say apart from "love your work!" or some variation. There are a few I have struck up twitter convos with, which I tend to like better.

Super curious on who's commission list is opening, Felix. :p
Felix Lu

You won't have to wait long!;)

I’m doing some work from home and I just thought you all should know that I just got an email from a regular customer of mine who’s legal birth name is Superman.

@Jason "Mike" is the best guess for male names of my age (mid 50s), and still a good bet for all age groups in the Western Hemisphere.

@mike - ah. Lived in Berkeley for over 10 yrs. We should get together when this is all over

11:51
I double what Rob said... speaking with Tradd at heroes was a treat

11:53
@Jason K. Did you get on Ian’s list!? Would love to see his take on Eva!
Rob R

I've procrastinated work long enough, need to get back to it. Thanks for hosting this Felix! Always great to have a forum to talk with fellow collectors.

I'd love to see more videos of Tradd drawing.  He had one that was amazing on Instagram before he closed the page.

@felix BTW, One of the owners of my LCS in Berkeley, Fantastic Comics, mentioned seeing you in the shop a few months ago and enjoying catching up w you.  You probably know, but they're moving to a new, smaller location.  I fear that the pandemic will greatly hasten the existing trend away from physical comics and the direct market...
Felix Lu

@Mike...my regular shop is The Escapist...but Fantastic is a great shop, too. I've known Uel almost 30 years...I used to play in his fantasy baseball league, too. I wish him nothing but the best. A very challenging environment has gotten even more so.
Jason K
11:56
@victor - I did! But not eva
Morgan
11:56
There are definitely artists that I continue to get pieces from because of great interactions. When I first met Ramon Villalobos I wasn’t familiar with his work, but he was super cool, told me about his upcoming work and now I have a few pieces from him that I love. I might have never picked up his comics if it weren’t for that first interaction though.

@Felix the guys that you rep have been really cool to me at cons. Tradd, Stephen and Daniel couldn't have been nicer. Maybe they don't have to be mean or puff up their egos because they are confident about their skills. It is also good business. I don't want to give any money to arrogant dk heads. I can think of some situations where I have not bought art from artists that act like a-holes in person or on social media.
Felix Lu
11:59
@Andy...cons are not major part of our model, economically-speaking. We do better just staying at home. So for us, doing the shows is all about meeting fans and hanging out. Glad you got to meet those guys...hope you get to meet more down the line!
Mike (artless)
11:59
I think the benefits of seeing celebs & creators in person is hugely important for drawing folks to cons, and seeing art live is  obviously a huge draw for all of us, but OA cons might do better than virtual comicons of the more traditional sort.
Andy K
12:01
I left out Paul - he was nice too!
Morgan
12:01
The same can be said for all of Felix’s guys though. Every one of them I have met have been awesome. I have a pretty great, though not entirely appropriate, Nick Pitarra story from a few years back.
Felix Lu
12:02
@morgan...you would not be alone in having a great, and not entirely appropriate, Pitarra story. Probably everyone who's ever met him has one:P
Mike (artless)
12:02
@Jason K   You bet!  Some day we'll be allowed to meet folks f2f once again.

Hi Felix! Hi art friends! Rolling up super late to the party but just wanted to say what up!
Felix Lu
12:03
Hey Neil!
Matthew Birdoff
12:04
What are some of people's favorite indy books or artists right now? I could use a few reading recommendations.
Neil D
12:04
@victor I am on Ian's list and gave eva (if we're thinking of the same eva) as an option... lowkey the option I am hoping he goes for!
Felix Lu
12:06
@Morgan...although to be fair, fatherhood has mellowed Nick out a bit...
Joao Antunes

I also believe a non virtual experience exceeds by far the virtual ones but it can grow the spectrum of these experiences and even the hobby with more options on the table, and may even be the starting point to future gatherings arranged among artists, reps and collectors in live interaction (with a higher probability of avoiding bad experiences). I had the good fortune to know and get together with some fantastic artists that visited Portugal and I'm still hopping that others that I love their work and that I interact through emails or social media will come soon and be able to talk to them face to face, but the opportunity to make that first contact with many more artists that I still don't know their work seems much more easy and effective if done by those virtual experiences that can be put in place.
12:07
Oooopsss, have to write shorter sentences :)
Felix Lu
12:09
@Joao...I think you'll have more opportunities for this, as everyone is stuck inside, including artists. Daniel Warren Johnson, for example, would not have started his YouTube channel if not for the lockdown.
John Butler
12:09
@Matthew, I've sold pieces from artists who I met and was underwhelmed with as people. Sometimes it's good not to meet--- judge the work not the man only goes so far. Agree Felix's guys are solid human beings, however.
Morgan

@matthew it’s not new, but I’m always going to recommend Deadly Class. I’ve been digging Something is Killing the Children from Boom! and although it’s only two issues in, Undone by Blood has been excellent. I actually jumped in early and bought 6 pages from the first issue. Hopefully we get to see the rest soon.
Felix Lu
12:09
OK, everyone, I gotta wrap this up...so it's lightning round time...say what you gotta say! It's lunch time and I'm hungry!
Connecting…

@felix I'm halfway through the currently available Mort Cinder hardcover.  The stories are so-so for me, but the visual style and storytelling are wonderful for my taste, and I think are considered groundbreaking in their day by the cognoscenti.
