That's not on Jim. That's on the "fan". Whatever environment we're all operating in, was determined by fans and artists/reps alike. Everyone plays a part.

@Matthew Birdoff haha join the club

@ Jason. Clearly some feel that way. I can say for myself that it is not exactly a feeling of entitlement, but sort of akin to it, when I am dismayed by my inability to follow the arc of a creator I found early when they hit big. If you are in the game long enough and don’t only buy your nostalgia though, it’s bound to happen.

Can't wait for the next podcast!!!

DWJ just started a great YouTube channel.  It’s really cool to see his old sketchbooks and watch him draw.  I’m hoping he may record some of his commissions too.  Have you ever talked with your artists about doing more video of their creations?  I think it’s be neat to see some of these commissions come to life, so-to-speak.

We've done some time lapses in the past that you can find on our YouTube channel.

IMO, and this is strictly my opinion...an artist isn't able to do his best work if his attention is divided. And if he's doing a live stream and interacting with others while trying to draw, the art will suffer to some degree. Put it this way...I wouldn't want MY commission to be the subject of a live stream. I would rather the artist devote his full attention to the art, without any outside distractions.
Again, my opinion.

@Cristian C - not to spoil the podcast, but can you bring up what motivated you to commission that whole issue?

12:36
DKR #1 featuring almost all of your guys, Felix! ;)

12:36
@Cristian C I think you have an addiction.

Hi Christian, congrats on your undertaking

All of DK#1? Each page a different artist or all one artist?

@Jason K. Were you able to get on Tradds list this round??

I hear regularly from certain people  that Professional Athletes make to much money. A vast majority of us don’t begrudge them, as when you’re the best in your field, you should be compensated as such.

@Felix - I always enjoy seeing your commission lists open up, but you never list prices. I have no sense if some of these artists are charging hundreds or thousands or tens of thousands! Have you considered including a price range in the emails? Or is it OK to ask for pricing even if I'm unlikely to get on the more expensive lists?
Felix Lu
12:37
Hey Jay, answered above.

where was this exchange on FB? I really want to read now :)

@Erranga D. I remember speaking with one of the artists Felix reps and he was very clear that it changed his life in a very meaningful way from a pretty isolated existence with much less income to a real feeling of community and opportunities he didn’t know were possible. But now his stuff is more expensive so I hate you Felix! 😜
Felix Lu
12:38
I can live with that, Benno! But I will always consider you one of the nicest guys in the hobby.
Jordan

I'm with Mike.  I think I emailed you once about pricing for one of your artists, and you kindly replied back.  I believe the phrase I used was "too rich for my blood", lol.  But I'm not going to go on social media and blast the artist because the rates are more than I can afford.

Its all relative. We win some, we lose some.

Random question:  I saw on CAF an Avengers cover that was hand colored (issue 199).  Is hand coloring like that part of the publication process or are examples like that just colored after the fact?
Felix Lu
12:38
After-market, almost every time.
Francis Chervenak
12:38
That would be cool

12:38
Hey Felix!  I hope you're doing well!
Felix Lu
12:38
Thanks Ben, same to you.

12:39
@Felix follow up - do you find people that get the coveted spots buy in blind, or have asked for prices ahead of time/at time you send the email?
Felix Lu
12:39
Always ask for prices first. Then commit. I answer everything in order, so it still works.

I am very happy I was able to get on DWJ's list at C2E2 and get an awesome sketch from him!

Remember when people would do nice things and not expect anything in return? Conventions used to be a place where fans could show appreciation to their favorite creators and vice versa. Somewhere along the line flippers happened and creators felt taken advantage of. Nowadays it seems creators are trying to make conventions their full time jobs and all of the love that the conventions used to be filled with is now dried up and gone.
Felix Lu
12:43
I've been going to conventions since the early '80s. They are not the same at all anymore. For better and for worse. The innocence is largely gone. Which again, can be attributed to both sides of the table.

For us, we don't do shows strictly for business. Really, not for business at all. It's to meet fans and hang out. We don't charge for raw sigs. We will sketch for kids. But there are also those who will try to take advantage. I believe some fan rage about prices should be directed there, too.
Jordan
12:43
Will DWJ be taking commissions soon again, btw?
Felix Lu
12:44
We took his 2020 list already. I think we went over 50. It's going to be a year, at least, before we open his list again. Sorry!
Benno Rothschild
12:44
@pat L. No dealers at Dragon Con, so if you like the artist line up that’s all you will see except for the comic art show that several Atlanta area collectors put together, but it’s strictly a show, not a sale

When will you be doing more podcasts and videos Felix? Its been so long without a video!
Felix Lu

A lot will depend on pandemic, sorry to say. But working on things.

I think that thread and the one about Ron Frenz escalated quickly.

Sometimes a commission doesn't come out the way you want, it happens. Way I see it commissions are bets.
