ah!
Andy Robbins
1:26
but the best auctioneer I've ever seen at a show was Jimmy Palmiotti
Bar none
Jason Wood
1:26
Anyway, I'm hoping absence makes the heart grow fonder and Heroes 2021 is back to magical.
Felix Lu
1:27
@Jason...hope you can make it to ECCC one year with the boys, as Andy suggested...Seattle is an excellent city for a show.
Lambo
1:27
i remember one year they had rosario dawson
Andy Robbins
1:27
that guy pulled money out of the crowd like a magician
Lambo
1:27
as auctioneer
Andy Robbins
1:27
He made you want to bid and be part of the festivities
Andrew MacLean
1:27
Hey I gotta scram folks. But this was fun, I'll check in later.
Felix Lu
1:27
Thanks Andrew! See you later!
Jason Wood

@rob yes, most assume it's for charity. But it's for Sheldon. Not that there's anything wrong with it. But it started as a quid pro quo. He would put up artists (flights, hotels, meals) and they would donate a piece to offset the expense. But once their pieces started fetching $10, $15, $20K, it's understandable how there was bad blood. And yes, as @felix noted, for some reason they yanked Allison from the emcee job, too.

My two favorite Heroescon's were last year's since it was the first year I was into OA. Basically opened up a whole second half of the con for me. And the year Stan headlined. Stan was amazing
take care Andrew!
Jason Wood
1:28
I'd love to go to ECCC. Have they officially canceled for the second time? It was rescheduled to August, right?
Felix Lu
1:28
August is cancelled now, as well.

Question for the group: I'm about 9 months into the hobby and curious about when folks feel like they had a good feel for the value of pieces in the market. I feel like the charity auctions have skewed it upward (and for great reasons!)... Did it take you a year? Two? How many big (for your budget) mistakes did it take to teach you? Hope to meet all of you at cons when those exist again.
Andy Robbins
1:29
Didn't it use to be at least partially for Charlotte fire fighters children's fund?
Rob Rusch
1:29
@Jason yea, Heroes does a ton for the Charlotte comic scene, definitely worth giving back to. But a price share only makes sense at those $$'s
Felix Lu
1:30
@Casey...for me, it just took one mistake. I also learned a lot from observing others. Just need to put in the time. There are more resources available now than ever!

@Jason Heroes will always be magical to me, even without the smoking jacket crew.  One of the few shows out there which is almost exclusively about comics and creators.  Every year I meet amazing new artists to fall in love with there.
Andy Robbins
1:30
The August ECCC is cancelled - they packed it in for 2020
Felix Lu
1:31
ECCC, pre-Reed, was basically Heroes Con West. Just a great comics-centric show. Not quite the same anymore, but still very good. Because Seattle still a fun town.
Rob Rusch
1:31
@Casey I just follow the rule of only buying what I love. Can't go wrong that way!
Andy Robbins
1:32
Casey - if you had observed a chat discussion last night w a group of long time collectors, the common theme would have been we all feel stupid
so maybe people never learn
Rudra

@Casey I’ve been in the hobby some three years now and have gotten a bit more serious recently (possibly due to being under house arrest). Only now am I starting to get a feel for value, although I wouldn’t call it a ‘good’ feel for value. And this is after watching Heritage and the other public auctions for three years.
Casey A
1:33
@Andy - that's comforting to know.
Tim D
1:33
@andy from a value standpoint would imagine this stuff has been impossible to predict in the longterm, and hindsight is as they say
Andy Robbins
1:34
It's the double-edged sword of being around a loing time - for every great piece you're happy to have bought, there are 20 woulda/coulda/shoulda's
Jason Wood
1:34
@casey for me it was the opposite. For years I avoided buying pieces and every subsequent year I would feel stupid for having passed b/c the price was now substantively higher. My rule of thumb is...buy what you love and can afford. I'm pretty hardcore against buying OA as an investment. I know there are others who disagree, but ultimately I think it's a bit of a fool's errand. If you have good taste, collect for a long time, and don't get crazy overspending on auctions, you'll likely eventually find a part of your collection is worth a lot more than you paid. But don't COUNT on it.
Andy Robbins
1:34
absolutely - 20/20 hindsight
Tim D
1:35
@Andy I think you have done alright you have a very interesting and amazing collection. Also props that you keep up on the current good books.
Jason Wood
1:35
I've probably have a half dozen conversations with Felix in the last three years that ended with "I'm going to pass this time" and remember each with visceral self-loathing when I realize how I'll never get that art at that price again. LOL.
Rob Rusch
1:36
@Jason that's exactly my mindset. It's way too much of a gamble to spend thousands and hope it's worth more later. Just buy for myself and if it happens to be worth more later and I can bare parting with it, all the better
Andy Robbins
1:36
Try to - I need to give curr Thor a try
Tim D
1:36
@Jason W amazing call on the Moby Dick commissions btw really think that topic brings out the creative juices.
Casey A
1:36
@jason, that's really helpful. I've stacked up about 4 big regrets so far. Not looking at it as an investment at all, and I know my limitations as a teacher trying to collect... but I think the intuition about when to go for it when a piece comes up at something like Comic Art Live is what I'm really hoping kicks in sometime in the near(er) future
Andy Robbins
1:37
My general rule has been to wait for the piece of art that when you're holding it at a show, you're too afraid to put it down for a second
Jason Wood
1:37
What Felix did...which no other modern rep could...is bridge the old-head collectors (no offense old heads! Haha) into appreciating and valuing new comic art. I'm not sure why others couldn't, or whether they never tried. I remember Andy talking about Squirrel Girl on a podcast ep and thought, wow, that's unusual.
