i’m new to OA. Only own a few pages. I’m mostly a toy and statue collector, and some prints. Big dbz collection. But I’ve been getting a little meh on it, and after getting my first two oa pages frames, I’m considering selling off some of the toys for OA. But I’m honestly concerned about the long term investment. I feel “safer” with the toys and statues if that makes sense

@Jacob...really discourage looking at any collectible as investment (and OA is both art and collectible)...but keep watching both markets.
Jacob
4:44
yeah just used my iphone keyboard

4:44
@felix did you see they’re remaking Face/Off ?

felix was a toy master and is now in OA so that should tell you something.
Jason M

I can tell you it’s been easier finding space for a statue than more OA in my house. 🤪
Jacob
4:45
can’t deny tho that art on the wall is a wee bit classier than a bunch of dbz figures, robots and marvel statues lol

@jacob welcome to the best hobby!
Jacob
4:45
oh absolutely

4:45
@Jacob Felix has some great podcasts you should listen to concerning OA as investment.
Jacob
4:45
i shouldn’t say investment

@Jacob, when dealing with collectible assets, everyone always feels safer with the devil they know. I’m sure there’s some people here who would be terrified to sell their arts for statues.

It will probably take years until I'm able to buy a complete issue because there are too many artworks I want and I'm allways buying several artworks at the same time, so almost everything I'm buying is with time payments and except for the house I never used time payments for anything else in my life :)
Jacob
4:45
because I don’t have it for the purpose of accruing value
Felix Lu
4:46
@Jacob...with any toy or statue...or anything that's mass produced...you can get it any time. Just a matter of how much you want to pay. That's not true with art. So value aside, that's a major difference right there, in terms of collecting.
Tim D
4:46
@Felix thanks will check James for overlay

4:46
@jacob - investment, to me, is more equity securities...and then use those gains to buy OA which is more of a hobby. That's my mindset anyway
Jacob
4:46
@joe very true. It’s all about markets and knowing yours. Since I’m new to the oa market I don’t have a gauge on it yet
@victor will check them out
4:47
@stefanomjr good mindset.

@Joe L bingo! I recently sold a piece of art for the first time since I started collecting, and even though I’ve bought a lot, I didn’t really know what to ask. When I seek comics, though, it’s a no-brained because I’ve done it a million times.
Jacob
4:48
I’ve built a lot of my collection off “trading up.” Buying low, selling high, kind of thing. Try to keep the collection paying for itself, as I know many do
Felix Lu
4:49
@Jacob...would not recommend that with art. Anything you buy, you should be buying to keep. Not that you have to keep everything...but avoid the churn. Diminishing returns when it comes to art, from what I've seen.

Felix have you thought about putting all of the sold/Commission are on a separate page or just removed from the available art?  As is the site is hard to navigate.
Felix Lu
4:49
@Disgruntled...no. Not yet, anyway. Just have to scroll past them, not really that hard. IMO, of course.
Morgan H

*sell comics

@Jacob if your
collection ever

I've had a guy contact me a couple times asking if I'm selling a page I have up on CAF, even though it says NFS. I have no intention of selling, but it's kind of a nice validation that I got a page that other people also like.

@Jacob, even if you are not in it for accruing future value, it’s only natural to want something you’ve spent a lot of money on to at least hold it’s value I’ve time. I would say avoid the trap a lot of new collectors fall for (including me): don’t buy everything you see right away. Buy one or two pieces over a long stretch and see how you feel, see if it “brings you joy”.
Jacob
4:50
i agree @felix and that’s good advice. I have no intention of speculating on art.
Felix Lu
4:51
@Disgruntled...I mean the commissions. The SOLD art rolls off after 90 days...

@jacob  - I guess I am better equipped at determining value of an equity security that is traded in an open market. When it comes to art, there aren't enough willing buyers and sellers for me to ever know for sure if I am buying anything I can flip higher so I dont even try. I'd rather overpay for something I really want and tuck it into my corner of the "black hole" market than try and figure out if it's worth buying and flipping for more....if you can do that then more power to you!!!!
Dan T
4:51
@Newell - I've had that exact feeling recently... Mine was my SSB page.  Shocker, I know.

I bought a page for $75 and years later was offered $2000 for it.  I turned it down, but I was tempted....
Newell
4:52
@Dan nice! mine was a Batman 66 page by Jose Luis Garcia Lopez.

Maybe a silly question, but what % of OA collectors have a CAF or somewhere to display their collection online? No way to know, of course, but I'm curious.
