Felix Comic Art Chat (8/21/20)

@Casey...good question. I used to think all OA collectors were on CAF. Then most collectors. Now I think it's just a small slice of the overall hobby. I believe most of my customers aren't on it, and may not even be aware of it. Too bad, because I still believe it's the best resource in the hobby.

@Casey very few
Jason M

Of course you can always combine art, comics and statues...
stefanomjr
4:55
@Casey - I do. I wonder though, how many folks hold back from posting ALL their art. Like, I think if I got a Tradd SSB page off the last sale I'd hold off posting it

@Newell - excellent!

@Dan and @Disgruntled, I’ve been asked about my Joëlle Jones pages, but I don’t even entertain those inquires. Her art is exactly what “brings me joy”. Using a Felix repped guy as an example, I love just looking at my Ian Bertram commission.

Caf is a tiny sliver. I think the art market is so much larger than 95 percent of collectors think.
Felix Lu
4:56
@Nathan. Yes. Something I've come to realize. Didn't know it at first.
Newell

I just got on CAF within the last year or two... I think I learned about it from these chats!
Morgan H
4:56
@felix I had no idea CAF existed until you told my brother and I about it at ECCC (2015 I think??) and I still didn’t get on there until 3 years later. Definitely don’t expect you to remember that interaction btw.
Felix Lu
4:57
@Morgan...that's cool that you remember! Yeah, I try to spread the word when I can! CAF is hugely responsible for growth of the hobby, and I want to support them whenever possible.
Casey A
4:57
@Felix, me too. I just see awesome stuff go up, then get sold, then never see it again. Makes it tough to keep track of what might be out there. But I get folks not wanting to get overloaded with constant inquiries for super popular stuff.
Alvaro

@Jason M Is that THE Jae Lee Inhumans cover?
Dan T
4:58
I set my CAF up about a year ago and immediately put everything up there.  I still post most things, but sometimes, I've just been lazy about it.
Joe L
4:58
@Casey, I have a CAF page, but I’ve only put about half my collection on there or so. Some pages I’m just too last to put up, others I just choose not to.
Rob Rusch
4:58
Many examples of big chunks of stuff that never shows up on CAF - e.g.; not a single Rossmo BWL page showed up on CAF. Unless it sold complete, which I don't think it did, you think at least one page would be on CAF if most people used it
Felix Lu
4:59
@Rob...that's a good example. Like I said, I think most of the people who buy from me aren't on CAF. So many names I've never seen before. The hobby is both bigger than I thought, plus I've brought in a lot of new people. So even bigger now.

I found out about CAF at a con talking to a fellow while in line to meet someone. I’ve actually had some great experiences in con lines!
Jacob
4:59
I know about CAF but don’t use it.
Jason M
4:59
No, I could never afford that, but I was content with a very nice reproduction.
Doyle

I have most of my stuff up on my CAF page, but my stuff is mostly con sketches.  I know there are mega buyers out there that are afraid to advertise that they posses a bunch of Kirby's and a Fraza
Mikail

I was shocked when Bill Cox said my auction Mignola was the first one to be posted to CAF
Felix Lu

Another good example!
Jacob

Awesome display @jason m!

Felix you obviously have an inside view, when you look at information like your mailing list, Heritage’s bidding numbers, social media artist follows, I think number of active collectors is monstrous.
Felix Lu
5:01
@NathanS...all good indicators. Obviously, only a small percentage of social media followers will buy art...but even that percentage represents a considerable number.
Newell

the only thing I don't have posted on my CAF are the two pieces I won at the HeroesCon art auction last year. They're too big to fit on my scanner, and I haven't gotten around to trying to take decent photos of them.
Doyle

Most of my stuff is on my CAF, but I know there are mega collectors out there who are afraid to advertise that they have multiple Kirby's, some Ditko and a Frezetta all under one roof.
My collection is much tamer than that.

Speaking of Bill Cox & CAF, I def recommend checking his weekly update video on YouTube, which is just him discussing stats.

More and more, I’m just finding CAF a little gross.  Unless as a marketplace, it just seems like .... measuring.
Felix Lu
5:03
I think that depends on the individual viewer. I see a wide spectrum of collections on CAF. Especially compared to 10-15 years ago. Back then, much more heavily weighted at the top. These days, things are way more spread out.
Jason M
5:03
I’ve never been sure at how many pieces is it worth getting on CAF to share. I am a customer not on it like the man says.
Casey A

I wonder what other good ways people have to network and look for particular pages or covers during our time without cons. Seems like folks find mentors in the hobby to guide them along and connect them with others, but without being able to meet folks in person, does anyone have ways they've found effective?
Felix Lu
5:03
Um...CAF. LOL! Facebook (which I despise) is where a lot of collectors gather, too.
Nathan S
5:03
Has anyone noticed a decline in material coming to market this year? pickings have been pretty slim from my want list.
Felix Lu
5:03
@Nathan S...new or old?
Alvaro
5:04
@Jason M It does look like it, indeed! Who is the artist?
Morgan H
5:04
I met Andy Robbins in an artists line at ECCC last year. He knew my CAF gallery because we both have pages from the same issue of deadly class. I felt like I was recognized by a celebrity after listening to the Felix podcast so much 🤣

Did you get a selfie and an autograph?:P
