I don't think so. There are only a handful of teams that are going to be involved on Soto. The gap between Burnes and the rest of the rotation class has closed enough that there should be enough teams willing to pivot to Fried or Flaherty if Burnes/Snell are slow-playing things
Joe Schlabotnik

Does it look as if the broadcasting situation, and the Twins going on the market will make it less likely for teams to be deeply involved with the elite free agents? Will we see more short term contracts for guys who want to wait for the broadcasting question to be settled?
Anthony Franco
5:10
I doubt it. The RSN model is never getting back to the level that it once was. Maybe MLB's dream of a streaming package proves profitable, but that's a few years down the line and far from certain that they'll get the necessary buy-in from the large-market franchises that already have their own TV network. The players probably don't want to take on that risk en masse by going shorter term
5:11
The Twins typically aren't playing at the top of the market and had plateaued in spending under Joe Pohlad. If anything, the players (and Minnesota fans) are probably hoping for a short-term bump in spending for goodwill if/when a new ownership group takes over

Is there a real chance I sign Willy Adames this offseason? Or do I get creative and find a way to get someone else in at shortstop instead (if anyone)
Kevin C
5:11
What realistically should Braves fans expect this offseason? No Adames is not coming, nor Corbin burnes. Are there surprise candidates we could trade for and use pieces like Arica and Solar?
Bill
5:12
Should Atlanta explore trade possibilities for their albatross ,Sean Murphy and open wide the door for Drake Baldwin? I shudder at the prospect of a full season of Soler’s defense. What moves do you see them making?
Grumpy
5:12
Chi Sox trade Crochet to the Braves for Waldrep and Nacho?  Possible?
Anthony Franco
5:13
I think there's a chance on Adames but it's very much not the way they've operated since Anthopoulos took over. They're one of the hardest teams to predict because they always seem to jump in out of nowhere on a player that nobody expected to be traded
5:15
So I'd probably pick Adames elsewhere, although I will say that there aren't many fits I like for him beyond the Giants. That might be one of those where we independently unanimously pick the Giants on the Top 50 and it reads like we're certain he's going there when the reality is that none of us could find a match that we liked better
5:16
I think they'll trade Soler. I've said before that I'd keep Murphy/d'Arnaud for one more year but I wouldn't be shocked if they moved on.
I could see Waldrep and Alvarez as a Crochet package, sure
5:18
As far as shortstop goes if they don't sign Adames, maybe J.P. Crawford works there. Feels like it's time for the Mariners to shake things up on the infield and that'd create some payroll room for Seattle to attack the offense in free agency

5:18
How many years and what kind of AAV will it take to sign Tanner Scott?
Anthony Franco
5:19
We haven't talked relievers on the Top 50 yet but he's the only relief pitcher that I put four years in our prep work. I have him around 4/40

Trading away Helsley, Contreras, and Burleson would add the most to the near future of the Cards. Would that trio return at least a couple top 100 prospects who are currently blocked on their teams? Colby Mayo at 1B next year would be a welcome addition...
Anthony Franco
5:20
I think Helsley could net a back of the top 100 guy but would not expect anyone from that group to land a prospect of Mayo's caliber
Thomas
5:20
Wacha will decline his option, correct? Royals need him back but would they face too much competition in FA? Feels like something they should try and get done before free agency starts
Anthony Franco
5:20
Yeah I expect Wacha to opt out and probably sign for three years
5:22
He's still eligible for the qualifying offer though. $21MM is a decent chunk of change for K.C. but not dramatically above what they paid him this year. If he opts out and they make the QO, he could accept, get a pay bump of $5MM and everyone's happy
Michael Andolini
5:22
Does a Red Sox offer of Mayer, Abreu and Criswell for George Kirby get a deal made?
Anthony Franco
5:23
That's a strong package but I don't think Kirby's available, full stop

Do the D'backs bring back Walker, or let him walk? They have some other interesting decisions on Suarez and Sewald too - the time to contend is now, but do they have the resources to go all in?
Anthony Franco
5:24
He's an obvious QO guy. He'll decline. I'm a little lower on his market than the rest of the MLBTR staff
5:25
I think he ends up at two years in the $20MM range. If that's the case, I could see the D-Backs doing it. Tim, Darragh and Steve all had him at three years at a similar AAV and it's harder for me to see the Diamondbacks making that kind of commitment
John Middleton
5:25
My opening offer for Soto is $650M/12. Enough?
Anthony Franco
5:26
Yes, I think that would do it from the Phils or anyone else. I do not expect a $54MM AAV to be the opening offer though
Grumpy
5:26
The sponsor patches on the jersey’s are one thing but the “Strauss” logo plastered all over the batting helmets is getting to be a bit much.  Where does it end?  At some point we might as well have corporate team sponsors - the “Las Vegas Athletics sponsored by Dicks Sporting Goods”.  (Rolling my eyes in disgust)
Anthony Franco
5:27
The uniform ads don't bother me but I get why you're annoyed by them and unfortunately only expect it to expand. I know you're half-joking about the corporate team names and don't think it'll ever get that far but it'll come close haha
5:28
Pretty sure the NHL had sponsors for its divisions during the COVID season
Fun One
5:28
How much thought do you all put into the photos you select for each article? Do you seek out good/silly/unique? Is there a standardized approach?
Anthony Franco
5:30
Generally very little. In most cases, it's just pulling one of the most recent photos of the player from our image provider. Ideally it'll be somewhat related to the post topic
So I'll try avoid one where the headline is about Player X getting DFA and the first image is of him celebrating a walk-off hit or something
John Middleton
5:31
You have to blow away the competition up front to avoid a deep pocketed bidding war.
Anthony Franco
5:31
I don't disagree but this is almost never how teams actually approach free agency
5:32
Going above market value to ensure you get the player right away isn't something front offices or owners like doing
Juan Soto
5:33
What's the pitch for Mets over Yankees outside of more money?
Anthony Franco
5:34
More money might be the only pitch necessary
5:35
The Mets have a lot of young talent. They're in the NLCS. He'd get to stay in New York and play with another superstar in Lindor. It's entirely possible the Mets make it as far or further than the Yankees do this year
5:36
All of that also applies to the Yankees, to your point, but there's a lot to like about the Mets and most free agents just sign where the most money is anyway
