Don't think the Rays are doing that. They love Glasnow
3:23
Not sure the Twins would either, since they're probably giving up more in a vacuum than they're getting back. It'd just be a really tough sell for Tampa to deal Glasnow a couple months after making him the highest-paid player (for a single season) in franchise history and raving about how much he wanted to be there

Cardinals fan here--Mo said he is looking for another big bat (making Arenado happy?) but unclear where that would be. Do you expect an outfielder or one of the free agent ss? Or a wildcard? Do you think DeWitt pushes the payroll up to $200M
Anthony Franco
3:24
Keeping Arenado and signing one of the shortstops feels out of character for them. Even with a forthcoming pay raise (which I don't think gets all the way to 200), not sure they'll want to commit that far long-term
3:25
Could go to the trade market for a catcher, sign Willson if you're willing to live with the defense. If they're kind of out on Tyler O'Neill at this point, you could look for a Mitch Haniger type

The Brewers have 18 players eligible for arbitration, who will get a contract of those 18?
Anthony Franco
3:26
Gott, Gustave, Perdomo, maybe Suter get non-tendered
Think Renfroe is either traded or non-tendered
And they'll at least listen to offers on Rowdy, their starting pitchers (doubt they actually deal more than one) and Hiura

At 2B, jays have biggio, Merrifield, Espinal, and Lopez waiting in the wings. Who should they start, who should they trade, who should they make a Utility player?
Anthony Franco
3:27
I'd start Merrfield, keep Espinal as a high-end utility option off the bench. Trade Biggio for whatever you can
3:28
Otto doesn't really factor in for me. He's a back of the 40-man type. Can deal him for a big league ready reliever or something if another team really digs him. If not, he can go back to Buffalo for another year

Is the reason the White Sox have not yet named a new manager because that person is on the staff of one of the teams in the World Series?
Anthony Franco
3:28
I do think there's a good chance they just hire Espada at the end of this
Not sure they've already decided on it though, since they are still conducting interviews

Hello. What moves, trades or free agency, you see Boston Red Sox making. I know they have multiple areas to address???
Anthony Franco
3:29
Shortstop's pivotal. Obviously they're trying again to extend Xander. If he leaves then they have to address a middle infield spot (with Story taking the other)
3:30
The whole starting rotation could use an overhaul. No reason they can't play at the top of the market there. Even if they don't end up with Rodón or JV, Bassitt or Senga plus one of the many mid-tier starters (Wacha among them) make sense
I think the 2023 roster looks quite a bit different than the one that ended this past season

James McCann---Keep, trade (paying part of his salary) or DFA?
Anthony Franco
3:31
Expect they'll keep him to start the year. Not going to get much in trade even if you pay down most of the money, might as well have him as a respected defender and leader of the pitching staff
Once Alvarez takes that job, he becomes a more obvious salary dump candidate

Is it just me, or does it seem more and more like the Cubs are gonna go BIG this off-season? Abreu, Senga, AND one of the four shortstops.
Anthony Franco
3:32
Maybe a little higher than I would go but any two of those three things happening seems plausible to me

What % chance would you guess that Verlander signs with the Jays? They were apparently runner up last year.
Anthony Franco
3:33
Like 8%? They're a good fit but Houston probably has the edge right now and there are a bunch of other teams I'd have slightly higher than Toronto given their spending habits (Phillies, Red Sox, Yankees, etc.)
3:34
8% feels low but it's more so that pegging any one team (particularly not the team he currently plays for) to get a top-flight free agent with confidence is tough. A third of the league will be involved there to varying degrees
Brewers
3:34
What if they offered Burnes and Woodruff to Dodgers for Cartaya, Vargas, Lux, Miller, Pepiot, Rios, and Grove.
Anthony Franco
3:34
Ha this would be wild but the Dodgers aren't moving seven of their top prospects/good young MLB players

Does it bother you that the top3 teams in the NL were eliminated and the number 6 team is in the series
Anthony Franco
3:35
Not especially. This just is how the system turns out. The best team rarely wins
3:36
It bothers me how many people want to now pretend the Phillies are actually the best team in the National League. They are not
But that's not the point. The point is to be a good team that gets into the tournament and then gets hot. If we just crowned the Dodgers the champion because they're clearly the best team, no one would want to watch past June

Are there many teams that will be shopping in the next Rule 5 draft? It seems like that's mostly the realm of teams that are at least a couple years from contention. Several non-playoff teams (e.g., Orioles, Rangers, Diamondbacks) seem past that point.  Teams that have been rebuilding and already have a slew of prospects that they might rather give playing time to (e.g., Tigers, Royals) might not be super interested either.  And it doesn't feel like the M.O. for teams like the Angels or Rockies.  That leaves the Reds, Nationals, and Pirates, and maybe the Cubs, Marlins, or Athletics.

what is the rule 5 draft? Is the "double" draft this year a way for the Nats to improve themselves?
Anthony Franco
3:38
I don't know that we're going to see anyone take three Rule 5 guys like the Padres did during the lowest point of their rebuild, but yeah, teams will still try to steal a prospect they like. It's not the Red Sox were rebuilding when they popped Garrett Whitlock. They just correctly thought he was good (and he turned out even better than that)
3:39
Context for the anonymous questioner: the Rule 5 allows you to draft certain players who have spent a significant portion of time in the minors and aren't currently on another team's 40-man roster. They're typically not great prospects -- if they were, their current team would make room for them on the 40 -- but there are usually a couple guys a year who stick around
3:40
Have to keep them on your MLB roster for all of next season or send them back through waivers and then to the original team
I do think the Nats will take a shot or two, yeah

Die hard White Sox fan for over 65 years, has Jerry Reinsdorf been a good owner, I say NO! He blackmailed the state into building an inferior ball park and Chicago is more of Cubs town now than when he bought them and Wrigley Field is more of a destination than Guaranteed Rate Field.
