Who is a surprise player that could end up in Seattle that nobody is talking about?
Anthony Franco
5:54
They're a dark-horse fit for the shortstops, I guess. They'll be in the market, but you're talking about another long-term investment for a player who they'll probably try to kick to second base. It wouldn't stun me, but there are cleaner fits
5:55
I think the free agency pursuits will be more in the mid-tier range of the outfielders. Benintendi's at the top of that group, maybe Conforto on a bounceback deal
5:56
As far as someone completely off the radar they could look into ... I guess I'll throw Luis Guillorme out there?
Not all that likely the Mets move him but he's in a utility role there. If Seattle thinks he's a viable second baseman, maybe you can work a deal out

If NYY loses Judge, what do think of Trea Turner and Nimmo as replacements?
Brian cashman
5:57
Assume that they don’t get judge. What’s your prediction for their other moves?
Mike
5:57
If the Yankees resign Judge, what’s their next move?
Anthony Franco
5:58
I do still think they'll keep Judge ultimately, but if they don't, then Nimmo and one of the free agent aces feels like the next plausible outcome
5:59
Still seems like they're going to be out on the shortstops in deference to Volpe, but they'd have to go pretty big on two free agents if Judge walks. Guess you could sub in Contreras for Nimmo, although Trevino's a better defender and that's something they really emphasized after Sánchez's struggles

I thought it was telling that Mark's offseason outlook for the Fish didn't mention JJ Bleday.  Do you get the sense that the former first round pick is no longer in Miami's plans?  Or he'll have to play his way back into their plans with a much better showing in AAA next year?
Anthony Franco
6:00
He’ll be around but yeah, I don’t think he’s a key piece of the 2023 roster. Can’t really play center field, and they’ve already invested a lot in the corner outfield. He’ll have to outplay Bryan De La Cruz and Jesús Sánchez for left field time, I imagine. Just doesn’t look like a very good pick

I just don't understand the Urshela move?  Everyone seems to think he's a fantastic club house guy, an above average everyday player, certainly affordable for another year.  They did this why?  Explain it to Twins fans.
Anthony Franco
6:01
Reallocates some money, gives you a path to playing Miranda at third base while freeing them up to go after a more traditional slugger at first base/DH to pair with Arraez
6:02
I looked at the case for the Twins to trade him a month ago if you want a longer look at what I consider the rationale for it
Thought it was a fine move, albeit one that Twins fans wouldn't love

Could the Phillies really spend stupid money this off season, signing Turner, Verlander, Lugo, and maybe Jensen in an attempt to get those two more wins? How quickly is their window really closing?
Anthony Franco
6:02
No I don’t see that much happening. They’ll be active but I find it hard to believe we’re talking both an ace and one of the top shortstops
Arthur Dent
6:03
Supposedly the Mariners are still looking for one more corner outfielder.  Most likely a lefthander.  Obviously there’s competition with a lot of other clubs.  All things considered $’s, skillset, length of contract), how would you rank the following players as options for Seattle: Bellinger, Benintendi, Conforto,  Nimmo, Yashida.  I’d probably lean towards Benintendi… any chance he’d come to the west coast to play for a contender?
Anthony Franco
6:03
No reason to think Benintendi wouldn't go there if they make the best offer, although I wouldn't love the value for the team if we're talking four years at around Avi García money
Guess I'd rank them Conforto, Yoshida, Benintendi, Bellinger, Nimmo as fits for Seattle
6:04
Signing Nimmo for $115MM-ish and immediately kicking him out of center field feels like you're not maximizing value

What’s your take on the Hunter Renfroe trade to the Angels and what do you think the Angels still need to do?
Anthony Franco
6:04
I liked the move a lot for Anaheim. I’ve always kind of liked Renfroe more than the league seems to. There was never going be huge trade appeal there but they gave up way less than Seattle did for Teoscar, stayed away from a multi-year commitment they didn’t seem to want to make, and ensured they don’t have to play Jo Adell or Mickey Moniak out of the gate.
6:05
As far as what’s next, bullpen help and additional middle infield depth feel like the biggest concerns. Could look into a righty-hitting first baseman to pair with Walsh, although Urshela could chip in there
Tammy
6:05
Is Gio Urshela going to be starting shortstop for the Angels or will they still possibly add another starter
Anthony Franco
6:05
Minasian indicated they're planning to bump Urshela around the diamond. I imagine he'll get the bulk of playing time at shortstop but think they'll add a glove-first option to mix in there as well
MadBum Mad Hatter

Christian Walker, Alek Thomas and a MadBum for a bag of baseballs, does someone accept?
Anthony Franco
6:05
Yes but Arizona wouldn't offer it

Do you think sir Aaron Judge signs with the Giants or the Dodgers and stays close to home?? He knows the west is the best! Wishing you and your family a happy, healthy and joyous Thanksgiving holiday!! Thank you!!
Anthony Franco
6:06
Ha well, I hate to disappoint after that very nice sentiment, but I still find it really hard to see the Yankees letting Judge get away unless he's just completely set of playing in SF
6:07
Right back at you with the Thanksgiving wishes! Thanks so much!

Do you think the hype the Giants have encouraged about signing Judge have almost forced their hand? The expectations among fans around here are so high that failing to sign him it would take a lot to convince them that the team is serious about winning. This has shades of the Bryce Harper fiasco of a couple of years ago.
Anthony Franco
6:08
I don't think we're talking Judge or bust. If they come away with Turner and Justin Verlander or something, it's still a very good offseason
But given all the hype about how aggressive they expect to be, fans would be perfectly justified in demanding they get one of the top 5 free agents or so. If they come away with Brandon Nimmo and Andrew Heaney -- both players I like a lot -- that'd still feel pretty disappointing

Does the return for Teoscar look better now after seeing what the Brewers got for Renfroe?
Anthony Franco
6:09
I thought the return for Teoscar looked pretty good at the time (Steve will expand upon this in an email that'll probably go out today), but yeah, the Renfroe deal really hammers home how little teams value that kind of player
