Could probably build a package around either one of those guys as well, although it'd then involve letting the Bucs kind of hand-pick other names from the system

Many Red Sox fans are frustrated the Sox didn't pay Xander Bogaerts the $280 M that the Padres did. Xander is a fine player but @ age 30 he will fulfill this contract at 41. That's 11 more years playing a grueling162 games, 20-30 spring training games and post-season play.I know Tom Brady is 45 and shows little diminishment in his ability.
Anthony Franco

I don't blame Boston for not matching 11/280 on Xander. I also wouldn't have done that. I do think they deserve a fair amount of criticism for not making a realistic extension offer in Spring Training, when Bogaerts probably would've thought long and hard about the kind of deal they unsuccessfully tried to make this offseason

Why don’t I go to the dodgers
Anthony Franco
3:46
I think they work perfectly fine as a fit, sure
Justin turner
3:46
Where will I go
Anthony Franco
3:46
I'll take Arizona

Who can the Mets move to get the payroll down a little, if Steven A. Moneybags is so inclined?
Anthony Franco
3:47
I don't think they're worried about it. Could save a few million dollars by moving Eduardo Escobar or something, but I don't see why they'd bother
3:48
If Cohen were stressing about payroll, they wouldn't buy depth players like Elieser Hernández for an arbitration projection around $2MM

Cardinal's seem to be at their self imposed cap. I'm not complaining about Contreras, quite the opposite, I love this signing. However, they need a front line starter. That's NOT Flaherty. He's a glass cannon. He's great when he pitches, but he never pitches. And they could theoretically unload DeJong and save a couple million if they paid someone to take him. (This pains me because I really like Paul D., but he's not been good at all) What's a "Mozeliak" move that you see that I don't? I'm not sure they're excited about getting fleeced by Miami again. I'm not even sure I consider Lopez a legit #1. And maybe I'm alone, but,  I'm not in love with Bieber either. They have the pieces to trade for sure, but will they? This is a lot in one ask, thanks for the chats.
Anthony Franco
3:49
Yeah I agree with everything you said here. I like the roster a lot but it's true they don't have the true ace a lot of contenders do. I thought they were a good fit for deGrom or Verlander this offseason for that reason, and they didn't seem to pursue either one
3:50
At this point, I just don't think the big move for a starting pitcher is coming. Seems like they're content with the depth of the rotation and will reevaluate at the deadline if Bieber or Ohtani are out there

Will the Rays land Murphy (C- OAK)?  What do you think it will cost?
Anthony Franco
3:51
Sure there's as strong a fit as anybody. I assume you're starting with one of Curtis Mead or Taj Bradley and building from that. Jonathan Aranda feels like a guy the A's would love

How does Bryan Reynolds salary fit in with the Dodgers desire to avoid the luxury tax? What type of package from the Dodgers could make this work?
Anthony Franco
3:52
Reynolds is cheap, only making $6.75MM. He'd fit easily on the payroll
3:53
Likely looking at two top 100 caliber prospects in a deal. Impossible to know which ones the Pirates prefer but multiple guys from the group of Busch, Pages, Pepiot, Vargas, Stone, Miller would probably be involved
Rangers13
3:53
Duran, Dunning, O.White, J Smith, Acuna enough for REynolds?
Anthony Franco
3:55
Don't think so, no. There's a lot of interesting volume pieces there but everyone aside from White is kind of a third or fourth guy that'd be in this kind of trade. Guessing you'd have to replace one of Durán or Smith with a higher-caliber prospect

Any Profar rumblings?
Anthony Franco
3:55
Dead silent
But given how this offseason's going, I expect Boras to get him four years and $75MM
That's (mostly) a joke
Bob T
3:56
Anthony, who do you wins more games for their team deGrom or Tyler Anderson? I put the over/under for deGrom starts at 18. What do think?
Anthony Franco
3:56
Have to take deGrom, I'll take the over on 18 starts

Which teams are still in "clear salary" mode? A's, Reds, etc.
Anthony Franco
3:57
Not sure even Oakland or Cincinnati are clearing salary anymore. They've already done it, aside from Moustakas
They're two of the only teams I think are going into the year with zero expectation of competing though. Washington and Pittsburgh also in that group, Detroit to a lesser extent
Tony
3:58
Which teams - of all who need it - will pluck one of Toronto's catchers?
Anthony Franco
3:58
Arizona?

3:58
If you were to re-evaluate Swanson’s earning power based on the crazy shortstop contracts so far, how much higher in years and dollars would you go, and who will wind up with him?
Anthony Franco
3:59
Guess I'd probably go to eight years and like $168MM
Cubs remain my pick
Giants fan
3:59
This wouldn't make our fan base happy, but will this be an extra good year to look at bad contract + young player deals? After all the high spending, it seems like this could be a better road for the Giants to get younger and better (Hicks/Donaldson plus Peraza + more, etc)
Anthony Franco
4:00
I don't think the Giants can come out of this offseason using salary space to "buy" prospects (who wouldn't be at the caliber of Peraza) after whiffing on a bunch of big-ticket free agents

Gut feeling - does Murphy move this winter?
Anthony Franco
4:00
Yes

What goes into determing big market/small market cities?  I know it's sort of an arbitrary label, but San Diego has over twice the population of Boston, yet we still think of them as small market, although you can include New England in the Red Sox base.  The Padres spending this offseason should be no surprise.  Is overall fan base figured in?
Anthony Franco
4:01
This is a good question I don't have a strong answer to. More than anything, I think I retroactively determine what's a "big-market" franchise based on their historical spending habits, even if that's an inaccurate way of doing it
