Do you think that Red Sox will trade Devers during the offseason? This would seem like a Bloom type of a move, and would necessary mean a rebuild, but a way to fix other issues in the team. If he goes, would the Mets seem to be the most logical fit with maybe Escobar going the other way for top prospects?
Anthony Franco
4:04
I don't think they're at that point yet. They gave no consideration to it this summer when they're already kind of postseason longshots. I don't think that'll change in a couple months

What was Avila looking for? A return of Verlander?  One would think that the offers would have been competitive at least.
Anthony Franco
4:04
I'm not convinced he made the right call haha. Just saying it's plausible, since I don't know what he was offered

Will we see Kerry carpenter or Ryan Kreidler before the end of the season?
Anthony Franco
4:08
Sorry, had to get a headline up. Derek Hill waiver claim
4:09
I think we could plausibly see both those guys this year, yeah. Kreidler feels likely, but they'll each need to go on the 40 this winter so I could see them getting a cup of coffee down the stretch

With Hosmer coming over to the BoSox, how much of an impediment is he to Casas being called up before the end of the season?
Anthony Franco
4:10
Shouldn't be much of one at all. He's not playing particularly well, and they're not paying him anything. When they want to go to Casas, Hosmer should just go to the bench
Joe Buck

Post trade deadline, who do you see could be this year’s Braves and surprise people in the second half
Anthony Franco
4:12
I don't really see one of those teams this year. Wouldn't be surprised if the White Sox got hot and made a run, but that's not tied to anything they did at the deadline
James Click
4:12
I had a pretty successful deadline but did fail to upgrade CF.  With Meyers struggles at the plate, do you think I should be calling Leon up for a go in September?
Anthony Franco
4:13
I'd just play McCormick in center. They seem really reluctant to do that and I don't get it. Chas is good
Madag
4:13
How much longer do you think the Astros can keep their window of opportunity open?
Anthony Franco
4:14
Yeah I don't think it'
Ugh every time I try to hit the apostrophe
4:15
I don't think it's closing any time soon. The young pitching plus Yordan/Tucker/Pena means they should be able to segue pretty easily from the last contention core to the next

Do you see any potencial breakout players in any of the A's players, who are rookies or not experienced? Who can join the potencial core of Soderstrom/Langeliers/Gelof/Diaz? Can any of Pache/Bolt/Bride/Garcia/Neuse/Smith/Barrera/Allen/Thomas still develop into solid MLB players? Which ones stand out in your opinion?
Anthony Franco
4:16
I wouldn't call any of those guys breakout candidates really. Still see a path for Pache and Allen to be bottom-of-the-lineup, soft regulars based on their defense but not core pieces
4:17
The rest, meh. I liked Neuse for a while but it doesn't seem like that's going to work
Ross
4:17
Did I do enough to make the Jays real contenders given what other top teams did at the deadline?
Anthony Franco
4:19
I liked the Merrifield and Bass pickups a lot but was disappointed they didn't so anything with the rotation. They're real contenders in the sense that they're going to be a playoff team and anyone in the playoffs is a contender, but I think there's a clear gap between them and the Yankees/Astros in terms of talent

Seattle should be in a solid spot for contacts in 2025. I know Jerry does not like long money deals like Cano and Pujols. Julio and Soto are younger than Pujols and Cano at the time of their deals. Could you see a situation Jerry makes them both 10 year 300+mill deals? I know it is a big leap into the future.
Anthony Franco
4:20
I don't expect them to sign both those guys. Soto wouldn't take 10/300 anyhow. He just turned down 440
But your general point is correct that there's a ton of long-term flexibility. I'm sure they'll make a serious run at trying to keep Rodríguez for a decade or more

Which Mets starter deserves to be called #5? I see Max, Jake and 3 #3s.
Anthony Franco
4:21
I'd consider Walker the worst of their top five guys but agree that doesn't make him a #5 starter in the way we usually think of it. That rotation's really good
Mo

who made the better trade, us or the Yankees?
Mike
4:21
Bader for Montgomery was it a good trade for the Yankees?  Or did they create a starting pitcher depth problem?
Anthony Franco
4:22
I slightly prefer Montgomery in a vacuum but I think it makes sense for both teams given their respective needs
4:24
As for the rotation depth concerns, that's maybe a little problematic with Severino out a while and Gil gone. But I'm guessing the logic is they've got the East sewed up and back-of-the-rotation arms are comparatively less valuable in the playoffs where teams are leveraging their upper-tier pitchers because each game means more and there are more off days
4:25
That's not the case for the Cardinals, who are fighting for a playoff spot. So it makes perfect sense they'd value that stability more than the Yankees, who are kind of in position to pitch Ryan Weber or Clarke Schmidt a couple times in September and not really care if they lose an extra game they'd have otherwise won, since Montgomery wasn't going to be a guy they were starting in the postseason anyways

4:25
is torkelson a bust?
Anthony Franco
4:26
Not going there yet. I expected better so far but it's still too soon to write him off
Thomas
4:26
What would be your offseason plan if you’re Kansas City? Solidify the rotation via the trade market? A trade like the one we did for Shields a couple years ago comes to mind.
Anthony Franco
4:28
I'd explore ways to trade MJ Melendez, whose value I think takes a real hit if you're not in position to play him at catcher. I don't actually think this roster is as bad as the record suggests and think they could compete if they added some rotation help and maybe a third baseman
Push Witt back to short, put Lopez or Massey into a utility role. Can't count on Mondesi anymore IMO

Where has Tim's mailbag been?
Anthony Franco
4:29
He's cutting back on the amount of time he devotes to baseball analysis to focus on higher-level stuff with the site (design, possible additions to the subscription service, etc.)
I don't know if he's permanently done with the mailbag but it's at least on hiatus for now
