Hi Gerry and thanks for the chats. With the reports of players lobbying for Rudolph to be the starting QB, what impact, if any, will this have on the decision to sign him (if they have that chance)?
Gerry Dulac
10:37
It will have none. The players have no say in the matter.

Ryan Clark said early in his TV days that players love Tomlin because he is always the same whether you do good or bad. You know what to expect. Ben just said Tomlin is buddies with the players. That showed when he was dancing in the locker room with them. How is this good for a coach? This seems to be one of the reasons the team has no discipline and very little leadership. This isn’t going to change. Why would we expect anything but the same results? This team has had very little postseason success since Cowher’s leaders left.

Ryan is right -- Tomlin is the same the week after a win or a loss. That might be his greatest quality. And when Ben talks about Tomlin being too chummy, I don't think he is talking about dancing in the locker room. We see lots of coaches do that.
Multiple Needs
10:39
The Steelers problems are great, and they are many. We need to find players at QB, FB, OT, C, DE, DL, ILB, CB, S, and P. We have drafted players at every one of these positions over the past 3 years. Very few are good enough need to be replaced. How is that possible?? Is it bad scouting? Poor drafting decisions? Player development issues? I suspect it is all the above. That screams a huge organizational failure that needs major changes at the top. Yet none of those changes have occurred or are even considered. What a mess.

Well, then, let's just blow up a 10-7 playoff team with every offensive starter returning and start again.

Maybe I am just a dreamer but I think with a new OC and QB coach that Kenny Pickett has a good chance to be a very competent QB and his extremely low INT rate is amazing, thoughts....thanks for the chat
Gerry Dulac
10:41
I don't disagree with that at all. I think Pickett is more than competent. But eventually the Steelers will want more than just competent.

Here’s a general, non Steeler question that I’ve always wondered about.  Everyone says when an offense goes on several long, plodding drives, it wears down the defense and they typically find success.  Why?  Doesn’t the offense get worn down as well in these long drives?  The o-lineman are just as big or bigger than the D-line.  Linebackers are about the size of tight ends.  D-backs are about the size of WR’s.  So how does just the defense get worn down?  Was always curious about this claim.  Can you provide an answer?
Gerry Dulac
10:41
I can't because I always say the same thing.
What Does He Do?
10:43
Bradshaw once stated that Tomlin is more of a cheerleader, and he doesn’t know what he does. I couldn’t agree more. As an insider, and this is a serious question, what does he do during the week? Monday there is no practice. Tuesday, he tells clichés and lies to the media. If he prepares Wednesday through Saturday, it doesn’t show because the team is very rarely prepared. Then on Sundays, he stands and watches. I feel it is a very legitimate question to ask what the gut does all week.
Gerry Dulac
10:44
Well, he must be doing something because he is 13th on the league's all-time win list for coaches.
Pittsburgh Bungles
10:44
The only coach that compares to the postseason failure streak that Tomlin owns is Marvin Lewis. Our Steelers are very undisciplined and highly penalized. We have players that are selfish, immature, and care more about themselves than the team. How are we that much different from the Bungles teams that we used to laugh at and call the joke of the league??
Gerry Dulac
10:44
You are correct about the streak But Marvin Lewis doesn't have two Super Bowl appearances and one Vince Lombardi trophy.

Gerry why was Mike Tomlin’s contract not extended last year as has been customary? Were they not able to agree  on terms or did one side not want to get it done?
Gerry Dulac
10:45
I think because his previous extension was for three years, not two. And the reason it was for three years is because the extension before that was for one year and an option.

10:46
There are fans advocating trading for Fields then not picking up his 5th year option.  Wouldn’t the Steelers have to make decision on the 5th year option before he played at all for them?  Why would they trade for him and not pick it up?
Gerry Dulac
10:46

Did the Steelers finish 10-7 and make the playoffs? With all the angst among the fan base (and I understand the lack of confidence in the QB position), one would think they were bottom feeders in the NFL.
Gerry Dulac
10:46
I'll go back and check but I'm pretty sure they did!!

10:47
who Was the worst Steelers draft pick in the last 10 years?
Gerry Dulac
10:48
Artie Burns and Jarvis Jones would be neck and neck

10:48
Any chance steelers try to sign minshew
Gerry Dulac
10:48
You know, he wouldn't be a bad No. 2 if Rudolph goes elsewhere.

Thanks for the chats and insight, as always.  Wow, you were quoted here, there and everywhere this past week concerning the Steelers’ quarterback situation and the prospects of signing/trading for a big-name QB.  Gotta be careful introducing logic to illogical speculation.  In the end, do you suppose if Mason moves on, the Steelers will simply sign one of the cheapest vet QBs and then try to develop a late-round pick (Jordan Travis perhaps)?
Gerry Dulac
10:51
That is the likely scenario. I think they will try to sign, as I stated, a Mitch Trubisky-type, whether that's Ryan Tannehill, Marcus Mariota, Drew Lock, maybe even Gardner Minshew. It will be someone who understands and accepts they are No. 2. And then I think they draft a QB around the fifth or sixth round. If Mason stays, then maybe they sign a low-level free-agent QB to be No.  3. Maybe

Hi Gerry, you are the best.  Thanks for your time. The Steelers still have a few years left with (let's say) in expensive quarter backs so why not go after some higher end free agents like a top end middle linebacker, center or defensive linemen? They could really make a difference in the win column. No?
Gerry Dulac
10:53
And they saved a bunch of real money by releasing Trubisky and Okorafor. I don't disagree with your thought, I just think recent history shows the Steelers have never been inclined to do that.

What makes people think a Steelers offense will right Justin Fields wrongs?
Gerry Dulac
10:53
Good point.
Hoboken Howie
10:53
Is Center a realistic draft need in first round or is second round more realistic?
Gerry Dulac
10:54
Probably second, but I wouldn't rule it out in the first round if the guy they really like is still hanging around.
GDS
10:54
Is it safe to assume that the Steelers will pick up Najee’s 5th year option but not give him a 2nd contract?
Gerry Dulac
10:54
I wouldn't say it's safe, but that's the most likely scenario.
Benny
10:54
Does anyone other than Omar/Tomlin/AR2 really know what the Steelers are going to do at the QB position in 2024?  I'm so tired of all the speculation and click bait lately from all media.
Gerry Dulac
10:55
Nope.
Michael
10:55
What is your reaction to The Athletic story about the Pirates this morning? Looks awful.
Gerry Dulac

Didn't read it
Danny
10:55
Any chance the steelers redo there dline
Gerry Dulac
10:55
They need to.
