There seems to be some seemingly good players being released for cap reasons. Do any of these jump out at you as being a fit for the Steelers or are they mostly cases of buyer beware?
Gerry Dulac
10:20
It's not always about buyer beware. A lot of moves have to be made for cap reasons. Let's not forget the cap hits the Steelers have on their defense already, so don't expect them to go out and pick up one of those players who will cost a lot of money

What do you anticipate happening with Derek Watt?
Gerry Dulac
10:20
He is an unnecessary expensive luxury who isn't exactly a difference maker on special teams or fullback. Connor Heyward should make him expendable.

Who ya' got for THE PLAYERS?

It keeps being written over and over that Rudolph and Trubisky want another team. Does any other team want them? Would a team really prefer them over the likes of Rodgers, Carr, Jimmy G, Lance/Purdy etc? Isn't it more likely both will be back and in the same positions?
Gerry Dulac
10:25
Not at all. Mason Rudolph is not thinking about being a starter; he wants to go somewhere to be a No. 2, the top backup. And he has no intention of coming back here after the way he was treated. Trubisky did not like the way he was treated either, but he is the top backup and he is going to be paid $8 million in salary in 2023, the most he's ever received. Right now, he will be the highest paid backup in the league. So, unless the Steelers want to cut his salary and cap hit ($10.6 million), he will be back. Got it.

Dumb off-season question but any chance the Steelers get some new uniforms or refresh the current look sometime soon?
Gerry Dulac
10:25
What was that first word you used???
Eric
10:25
With the increasing importance of top level WR the past few years could you see the Steelers selecting one in RD 1 if their top lineman or DB on their board have been taken?
Gerry Dulac
10:25
Nope. Speaking of dumb moves...

Hi Gerry. Do you have a feel about which athletes at the combine might have climbed higher on the Steelers coaches' radar?
Gerry Dulac
10:26
I don't specifically, but I will say the speed displayed by the top CBs will only enhance the grades they have on those guys.
Fire Bubble Gum
10:26
First, why does Bubble Gum Smith have a job? More importantly, we all know the Steelers' philosophy is not to spend money on "splash" free agents. But, would Bud Dupree or Tremaine Edmunds be considered "splash" to sign either of those guys?
Gerry Dulac
10:28
Bud I get because they need a top-tier backup at OLB, though it depends on the price. Tremaine Edmunds I'm sure will be too much for a defense that is already the highest-paid in the league.

Seems the Steelers didn’t meet much with Offensive Lineman much at the combine. Are they happy with the current situation or is this their top FA priority?
Gerry Dulac
10:29
I wouldn't read into that because nobody knows for sure how many OLinemen they met with at the combine. They also have pro days upcoming and 30 interviews on the South Side.

In your opinion, how many positions do the Steelers have to improve upon to become a true contender in the AFC? I'm thinking LOT, LOG and 3rd receiver on offense and DL, ILB and CB on defense. And, of course, Pickett must be serviceable at QB.
Gerry Dulac
10:31
I think their offense can be good enough right now so long as Matt Canada can do better than what we've seen for two years and Kenny Pickett continues to develop into year 2. A top-tier CB is a must. And so is a new beast for the defensive line.

If after the first week or two of free agency Mason Rudolph hasn't gotten any appealing bites, what do you think the chances are his agent goes to the Steelers and suggests a team-friendly deal? I know everyone thinks he can't wait to get out of town, and that's probably true, but it's also a high-stakes game of musical chairs for back-up QB spots that pay $3-4M/year.
Gerry Dulac
10:34
I learned a lot time ago never to say never, and the scenario you describe would fit into that category. But Rudolph is better than a lot of No. 2 QBs in this league and I would imagine he will find a new spot that isn't here. And, keep in mind, after being demoted to No. 3 last year after four years of backing up Ben, I don't think under any circumstance he would want to subject himself to being No. 3 here again.
The Real TP Hunter
10:34
How many outside free agents do you see coming in, and do you think Cameron Sutton stays here?
Gerry Dulac
10:34
Not many. And I don't think they want Cam Sutton to go anywhere but here.

This is more of a comment than a question. One of the hallmarks of the Steelers until the last seven or eight years was their ability to find very good players late in the draft. For example, guys like Brett Keisel (RD 7, 2002), Chris Kemoeatu (RD 6, 2005), and of course Antonio Brown (RD 6, 2010) to name a few. The jury is still out on recent late round picks like Mark Robinson (RD 7, 2022) and Tre Norwood (RD 7, 2021). Perhaps one or both will turn into quality starters. But to be serious playoff contenders, they need to start finding talented players in the later rounds.
Gerry Dulac
10:37
That's easier said than done. And, look, there is certain amount of luck involved there too. For all the Keisels and ABs you want to mention, there are a whole bunch more of Chris Oladokuns and Gerod Hollimans and Rob Blanchflowers

Have you heard of  the players complaining about the Steelers facilities at the stadium or the practice complex? Much ado about nothing?
Gerry Dulac
10:37
Nope. And yep.

Hi Gerry, can you help explain why there's a lot of people wanting LT drafted in the first rather than DL or CB?
If anything, shouldn't we be drafting LG in the 2nd round to replace Dotson who's on his last year or John Michael Smitz the C and move Cole to LG. and then draft LT and RT next year when Moore and Chuks are on their last year?
Gerry Dulac
10:38
Geez Nate, you are making a lot of sense. Defense should be a No. 1 priority in the draft, especially at No. 1
Lou
10:38
Hey Gerry. Thoughts on grabbing OL Orlando Brown and then going DL or CB  with picks 17 and 32? They have money!
Gerry Dulac
10:38
Don't have an issue with that all.
Guest
10:38
Gerry, did any particular player surprise you at the combine?
Gerry Dulac
10:39
Not especially. But you can't help but be awed at how Anthony Richardson performed. Whoa!
Lou
10:39
Gerry I forgot to ask….how about Tremaine Edmunds as ILB to pair with Jack?  Spend on Brown as OL and Edmunds and the rest draft.
Gerry Dulac
10:41
I don't think you will see them spend $$$ on OL in free agency. They did that last year and both worked out very well.  And they don't need to sign DL in free agency because they did that too with Ogunjobi and they need a new young stud to replace Cam with Tuitt gone.

The Steelers won a Super Bowl in the fifth season after draftingTerry Bradshaw and in the second season after drafting Big Ben. What would your most optimistic timeline be for winning a SB with Kenny P?
Gerry Dulac
10:42
I hate to tell you, I don't have one. But, because you asked, I think they are least two years away from being that type of contender. First they need to show me they can win a playoff game and holding the opponent to fewer than 45 points.

Mr. Dulac -  With teams drafting mobile Qbs the last couple of years like KP, Tua in Miami, Feilds in Chicago and so on. If  Kordell Stewart came out the last say 3 years do you think he would thrive in today's NFL or would he have the same kind of career he had back in the 90s with Steelers? Also what round do you think he would go?   He always kind of reminded me of Randall Cunningham.
Gerry Dulac
10:43
Thrive? He would be a top-5 pick without question.
