i have been a fan since the 70s and this is the first draft in years that I can honestly say they could go in multiple directions. I am not a fan of the QBs but my question is are they? We all know the Steelers will do what they is best and when they sign Edmunds it definitely created the flexibility.
Gerry Dulac
11:13
Good points Joe. Yes, it is an unpredictable draft on many fronts. They are a fan of one quarterback, at least for the first round. They might be fans of other QBs in the later rounds.

Do you see any drafted player outside of a WR or Georgia DT starting on day 1?
Gerry Dulac
11:19
Your No. 1 pick better be a starter in today's NFL. And, if not a starter, a big-time contributor. I really don't see that happening with any QB they might be thinking of drafting

Do you think the next few years can finally serve to get a good answer to the debate of who the more successful coach was between BC/MT?
Coach Cowher was very successful for many years without a superstar QB while Coach Tomlin has been successful with said superstar, but not to the level one would expect with a HOF QB.
Gerry Dulac

To me it's a nice debate with an obvious answer

I read a lot of intel on the Steelers but feel you and Ed are closest to the team. Do you have any inside intel or surprises they may pull on draft night? A player or direction they may go in the first 3 rounds.
Gerry Dulac
11:24
I can honestly tell you they're not sure who they will take in the first round. All depends what happens in front of them. But I can tell you they have a list of five to six players who they feel comfortable they will have a chance to select. There is no question defensive line and WR are the primary targets.

Should the steelers trade the "reindeer" plus their 3rd round pick for baker?
Gerry Dulac
11:24
Why would they want to do that?

My GM mind is telling me that we are going to move up to get a QB. I'm not liking that feeling. I don't see a QB in this draft worth jumping up and giving up assets for more of a miss than a hit at that position. Thoughts...
Gerry Dulac
11:25
There is no QB in this draft who would require a move up to select. Maybe a move down...way down. Anyone who does that, the owner should immediately fire the GM and/or coach.

I haven’t seen much written about how this being Colbert’s last draft could or couldn’t influence the Steelers decision to take a QB in this year’s draft—as in, it’s a very impactful decision, and the new GM would have to live with the QB we potentially take.  Do you have any thoughts or insights on this?  Or, does the fact that we will soon have a new GM play no part in drafting or not drafting a QB this year?
Gerry Dulac
11:26
It plays no part whatsoever, trust me

When was the last time a first round pick QB lost his starting job, changed teams to be a back up, then went on to success with a third team? Seems very unique if Trubisky becomes the Steeler QB for the next 5 years.

Has it been confirmed Kevin Colbert attended the Notre Dame pro day in-person?
Gerry Dulac

I don't know

Gerry - thanks for the chats.  Of all positions available, fair possibility that 2 WR are drafted this year... one early (1st or 2nd round) and one in later rounds.
Gerry Dulac
11:27
yes, more than a fair possibility

Does AR3 have any sway over draft picks?  I know he can say things like targeting a position group like he did last year with Najee but past the first round does he have input?  Even in the first round does he push to have a specific player taken. Thanks.
Gerry Dulac
11:27
Of course he does, but it's AR2. I don't think he pushes, but he offers his opinion.

we are hearing that DL Devonte Wyatt had an off the field issue at Georgia. Coupling that with the fact he’s 24, do the Steelers lay off in the 1st round?
Gerry Dulac
11:33
That issue involved kicking and damaging a girlfriend's dorm-room door. Never touched her, never harmed her. He was cleared of those charges. I'm not defending him, just telling you. As for his age, did you know Kenny Pickett will be 24 in June?

Hi Gerry - who is your guess the Steelers will select this year?  Agree with your colleague Ray on Ridder at # 20, or do they pick Wyatt or Davis (DL), whichever is available at # 20.  Or do you think someone else?
Gerry Dulac
11:34
Ridder is a second-round pick at best. Let me tell you, if Jordan Davis is there at 20, and I'm not sure he will be, I think the Steelers will set a 40-yard dash record running their pick to the podium.

Best guess, with the first round pick the Steelers select....

I'll let you know later today. Keep watching post-gazette.com.

From what you’ve gleaned from direct team sources, in what order do you think the team has the QB class this year?
Gerry Dulac
11:35
Willis, Pickett, Ridder and everyone else

11:35
Consensus seems to be QB in round 1. Which prospects have you heard they’ll take over a QB at 20?
Gerry Dulac
11:35
Only one -- JD. And it won't just be a quarterback. It will only be one specific QB
Ed in Carrick
11:35
is anyone at PG live-streaming the draft?  Is there a link?
Gerry Dulac
11:36
Nope. Not allowed

Greg Cosell has George Pickens as his number one WR. The team brass obviously attended the Georgia pro day. Dark horse pick at 20?
Gerry Dulac
11:36
Never say never when it comes to WRs. Never

11:36
Gerry, do you think the fact that there is not a clear consensus front runner in the QB's in this year's draft is an indication that this is simply an "average" group?  It doesn't mean that one won't emerge and be successful (always a possibility), but simply that based on what they have shown to date, there is not a clear stand out (and far greater risk of selection).
Gerry Dulac
11:37
That this is an average group has been known for months. Where you will see them be drafted will only reinforce that.
KJ
11:37
Good morning Gerry.  As we inch closer to draft day tomorrow, do you believe that the reason Tomlin & Colbert spent so much time and energy evaluating this year's QB class was because they really haven't had to do this out of necessity the past 18 years?  And now with the tragic passing of Dwayne Haskins, there is a "need" to draft a QB this season, just not necessarily in the 1st round?
Gerry Dulac
11:39
Part of what you say is absolutely true, and both Colbert and Tomlin acknowledged as much the other day -- that they've never spent this much time and effort evaluating QBs because they haven't had to. Haskins' tragic death will have nothing to do with whether they draft a QB on the first round. But it definitely will case them to draft a QB on the later rounds because they only have two and they want 4.
