Gerry Dulac's Steelers chat: 11.01.23

Thanks for these chats.  Like many, I thought they had a good offseason.  Still early to tell on the draft, but the other players they brought in at CB, G, ILB and WR haven’t been as much of an upgrade as one would hope.  At this point, how would you grade their off-season?
Gerry Dulac

I definitely thought the offseason moves were very good, as well. But that's why you wait to the regular season to properly evaluate the players/moves. I still don't have a problem with them. Seumalo and Cole Holcomb have been very good and I think it has been unfair what they have been asking Patrick Peterson to do at age 33. Their ILB crew overall is better than the unit they had last year. Most of their moves were for depth. A guy like Nate Herbig was brought in as  backup and when he's played he's been very good.

Hey G, luv your work. What do you think it would take for ownership to make a change at HC or force him to hire their choice of OC
Gerry Dulac
11:47
The second part of your question is more viable. Forget the first part. I think it's fairly safe to say the Steelers will not renew the contract of their OC.

Hi Gerry...with all the angst over KP's performance it seems to me it's way early to label him a bust. Not too long ago the Eagles and Dolphins were considering if they should move on from their QBs (Hurts and Tua). A little more time and....wa la! Do you agree? Thanks.
Gerry Dulac
11:48
He's not a bust, and anyone who suggests that is just frustrated and angry over their performance.

OL and DL both leave much to be desired.  What are the chances we can over the next off-season with a good draft upgrade them both significantly.  Especially given our reluctance to play rookies?
Gerry Dulac
11:49
I don't have a huge problem with the OL. They addressed that. But if they fail to draft a stud DL in the first round again -- with the first pick, not the second or third -- then they deserve everything they get.

I was so sure we were gonna win Sunday. We had our 2023 offensive game plan in place: Let the opponent kick our butts, run up and down the field, and then commit foolish turnovers to keep us in the game until the fourth quarter, when Kenny remembers how to play QB. It was all going to plan, but oops! Down goes Kenny. Will he play this week? Can the plan go forward with Mitch at the helm?
Gerry Dulac
11:51
Haha. That's been the formula all year. Margin of error is thinner than Snoop Dog. Hang around like unwanted in-laws.

Kenny P has now played a year’s worth of games, a decent sample size. It does not appear he is anywhere near a franchise quarterback, does it? When do the Steelers start looking to spend another number one pick  in the search? Prediction time - will KP be the starter for the first game of 2025?
Gerry Dulac
11:52
I don't know who said he was ever was, though I guess when you draft a QB in the first round he is viewed potentially as a franchise saver.
11:53
OK, we're running late so might have to go lightning round -- one or two-word answers here in.

Hey Gerry, love your work! Thanks for the chats. Of all the issues we have on offense, what do you think is the biggest? Outside of Pickens no one is really playing well and I have heard basically every other aspect scrutinized. I know there are no quick fixes but what do you think is the biggest or first thing that needs corrected?

Hey Gerry! Is there any chance the Steelers mix up the OLine tomorrow night since it's a short week? Maybe starting Jones? Thanks!
Gerry Dulac
11:54
Nope

Imagine if the Steelers would have drafted Howell over Pickett and Etienne over Harris.  Two more bad evaluations by Colbert. Colbert was highly overrated and was no Tom Donahue.
Gerry Dulac
11:54
Etienne yes

Tomlin is insulting our intelligence with his absurd claims about slow starts. What happened to “play for 60 minutes”? Would he be saying these things if he had an offense capable of scoring TDs early?
Gerry Dulac
11:55
15 minutes

Pickett just seems to miss too many throws. If Will Levis balls out against the Steelers and Pickett has his regular lack luster performance. I believe the narrative, "Pickett isn't  the guy" gets louder. What do you think?
Gerry Dulac
11:56
Probably. Unfair

Gerry, why do the Steelers take so long to play their talented rookies, while other teams around the league don’t have the same hesitation.  It’s not like the guys in front of them are high level performers.

How long do the Steelers stay with 88? Without looking I imagine he’s only dressed 50% of the games he’s been a Steeler…

Looks like the Steelers have 3 backup QB'S on their roster. Do you believe Omar needs to go QB shopping next year?

Hello . Thank you as always for the chat . When is the earliest that Friermuth can come back from the IR ? Do you expect him back sooner than later ? Thank you very much .

Some people think the story of KP is how good he is in Q4. My story of KP is how dreadful he is in Q1-Q3: 3-and-outs. Never give D a rest. Never playing with a lead. Expecting heroics from the defense & mistakes from the other team (which has led to most of their wins this year). Which do you think is the more accurate story?
Gerry Dulac

Gerry what your thoughts on KP8? Personally I think we give him another year with a legit NFL OC and if he improves great, if not move on. He's shown splashes especially in the clutch but needs more consistency.

11:58
Bingo

Gerry, looking more every week that the Steelers are far more than a player or two away from being a contender. Assuming the Steelers give KP another season (maybe not wise), at some point should the Steelers pull the alarm and deal away big money players and go for a total rebuild? Just seems like hanging around in mediocrity isn’t the answer.
Gerry Dulac
11:59
They won't

In your opinion what is holding 80 from getting on the field more, to at least help the run game? Thanks

I'm puzzled

Gerry,  If KP continues to regress this year and the Steelers end up with a losing season which gives them a top ten draft pick do you think they would consider a top QB (If available)?
