Why did Matt Canada insist on running everytime we were in 2nd and long? We ended up in way too many 3rd and long situations especially with a rookie QB?
Gerry Dulac
10:20
And that problem is compounded by throwing on first down when the running game has actually been more productive.

is there any Coach other than MT that would try to take Boyd out of the game before Higgins?   Or is that a manufactured narrative?
Gerry Dulac
10:21
I don't think they tried to take Boyd out of the game before Higgins. I think they tried to cover Higgins with what they have and that didn't work. The Bengals didn't throw to Boyd until the Steelers started double-teaming Higgins

Hi Gerry, If the Steelers were going to draft Pickett, wasn't it a mistake to sign Trubisky when they already had MR? Seems like the Steelers created a controversy for no reason. Have a blessed Thanksgiving!
Gerry Dulac
10:25
I'll say it again -- the Steelers signed Trubisky, a mobile QB, with the idea they were probably going to draft a QB No. 1 and they would use Trubisky until they thought Pickett might be ready, even if that were next season. Nobody, especially Trubisky, thought that would last 3 1/2 games. I don't fault their logic for signing Trubisky at all. All that being said, I will quickly go back to the point I made before the draft: The Steelers didn't need to draft a QB in the first round. They had other issues, and those still exist. They are right back where they started.

Happy Holidays Gerry. There is alot of debate about Kenny Pickett's development, floor, ceiling etc. Most might agree it is way too early to determine how good he can be. What indicators or traits do you feel fans should be looking for confidence that he CAN become " the guy"
Gerry Dulac
10:26
Thanks, and I agree -- way too early. I think he will become the guy, but please don't expect Ben Roethlisberger or Terry Bradshaw. That's not the case.

Devin Bush or Terrell Edmunds... if you only had the chance to re-sign one of them, who would it be?
Gerry Dulac

Good morning Gerry, every week Tomlin outlines the other team’s philosophy on both sides of the ball, I would argue this teams biggest issues on both sides is they have no identity. What is their offensive and defensive philosophy? Without one it hurts other places like talent. You draft and sign players to be scheme fits. The whole Offense line is out of order and playing out of position except maybe Cole. Mr. Rooney should make Tomlin this offseason settle on the team’s philosophy and get away from this crap of just throwing something against the wall hoping it sticks!
Gerry Dulac
10:31
I don't necessarily agree that they don't have a philosophy. On defense, it's to draft athletes who can run. And, for 18 years, their philosophy was built around Ben Roethlisberger. That all changed this year and, without him, you see how out of sync they look, philosophically speaking.

Hey Gerry.  I have thought the Steelers game plans and play calling have been predictable for years.  Now other teams are saying that.  When asked, Tomlin did not criticize the coaching (as usual) and fell back on his usual excuse.....execution.  My question is - if the other team knew the play called, and if we executed properly, wouldn't that make it even easier for them to defend the play if we run it the way it is supposed to be run??
Gerry Dulac
10:33
That's the universal answer for every team in every sport when things don't work well -- execution. Most times, it's most than that. Coaching. Talent. But it reminds me of John McKay's great line when asked what he thought of his team's execution, "I'm in favor of it."

I often see most head coaches reading play cards, interacting with assistants, interacting with players, coaching during the game, etc..  I only see Tomlin standing on the sidelines watching the game like a fan.  Why is that?

I simply don’t understand the thinking to keep Canada around. Even the Bungles said they knew what plays were being run. Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again expecting different results. Granted a new OC will have to use the same playbook for the rest of the season, but at least he could better utilize it. They could lose all the games but likely might do the same with Canada.
Gerry Dulac
10:35
That's why they don't make the move. Mike Sullivan would just be trying to run the same offense. But I tend to agree -- anything is better than what they have been doing.

I appreciate the chats Gerry.  Did Matt Canada recruit Dino Tomlin at Maryland?  That could really explain a lot.
Gerry Dulac

So I've been told

Happy Thanksgiving Gerry if you were in charge of the decision would you continue with M Tomlin for a few more years or would you ask him to step down and move on with fresh eyes and a fresh approach? I guess you can tell from my question that I think things are a bit stale in the or
Gerry Dulac
10:36
After 16 years, a coach's message can go stale, especially with the veterans.

Last year, what was it you kept saying to those wishing Ben away?
Gerry Dulac
10:36
They're getting their answer, unfortunately

Gerry isn’t it obvious from opposing players that the Steelers are running a show that is poorly coached? How can this go on. I’m talking about Tomlin who has overseen this similar stuff for years! Wake up Art!!!
Gerry Dulac
10:37
I don't need opposing players to tell me what everyone has been watching
Evan
10:37
would they keep a top 3-5 pick or try to trade it for a king’s ransom to a team desperately trying to move up for a QB?
Gerry Dulac
10:38
I would hope they would. Otherwise, you're deluding yourself into thinking you don't need one of those top-5 impact players. And that's wrong. I don't think this new regime would do that.

Gerry, it would seem that the Steelers will probably acquire 2 CBs next year, one via FA and the other a #2 pick.  One would start (FA) and the one drafted would be learning his craft.  Would you agree with this?  Thanks.
Gerry Dulac
10:40
No, only because if they draft a CB that high, they are doing so with the idea of him being a starter. I don't have a huge problem with Witherspoon or Wallace, but I think they are quality depth guys, not the type of shutdown corner they need.

What is your evaluation of G Daniels? He seems like a good player, but not a difference maker I thought he would be.
Gerry Dulac
10:40
I don't have a problem with the way he's playing, not at all
Bill
10:40
What letter grade would you give the Steelers for all their efforts to replace Ben Rothlesberger that include signing Trubisky, drafting Picket, phony QB competition, replacing Trubisky after 3 1/2 games, etc.
Gerry Dulac
10:41
I give an A for the attempt, I give an F for the execution

Is this year's team really that different than the past 4 years of steeler teams? The difference between winning and losing seasons is a few points here and there. The constant has been blowout playoff losses, regular season blowouts to lesser teams, wins over teams who had bad nights. My point is this season isn't an anomaly, its normal.
Gerry Dulac
10:41
Yes. Here's the difference -- Ben Roethlisberger. As Foghorn Leghorn would say, "Pay attention son."

10:41
Just an opinion: I feel if Trubisky or even Rudolph were playing all season the Steelers would have 2 maybe 3 more wins. Oh well  too late now. Be kind Gerry, I am not and expert
Gerry Dulac
10:42
You don't have to be, Bill. I agree 100 percent, and so do a few players in that locker room

This is the first team that is 100% Tomlin's team.  The players and coaches were all chosen and developed by him.  He had 15 years to prepare for this.  Is this the best he can do??
Gerry Dulac
10:42
I've run out of money to pay you, but that is a good point
