Do you think McCann could possibly fill the Hagelin role on Geno's line but with a little more skill.  Then you can move Horny back with Sid and we can all live happily ever after?
Jason Mackey
2:12
Yeah, I think he could. But I wouldn't do it now. He's been too good with Crosby and Guentzel. I also have liked ZAR in that role. He's been perfectly fine. That line is getting chances; I don't know why so many of you want to break it up.

when Phil was on the PP, I thought teams were giving him much less time when he had the puck at the left half wall, they were charging him hard and forcing him to make quick decisions which got him into trouble with giveaways and bad passes. I think in the past when he thrived as a playmaker over there he had more time. Notice that too?
Jason Mackey
2:13
I think when Phil is fine, he does a better job handling the pressure. Every PK in the league wants to take away time and space. The best power plays move the puck -- a pass or a shot -- before that's possible. I think it's more Phil than other teams is what I'm saying.

I keep seeing references to Guerin mismanaging WBS.  Can u direct me to more info somewhere so I can learn more, or explain a bit if there aren’t articles about this already?
Jason Mackey
2:15
I don't have any links to such a thing, sorry.

Hey, what kind of discipline have the Pens done with Geno and the stupid penalties? Lemme tell you something, my son does something stupid then i get the belt out. And guess what? after a few whacks, he doesn't do it again
Jason Mackey
2:15
I hope you're kidding about the second part. ... What can you do with Malkin? He takes undisciplined penalties. I don't think that's going to change at his age.

were you surprised they went with Trottman over Rukolo the other night?
Jason Mackey
2:16
I was not. They've liked Trotman's game for some time. And he played really well. He deserved to keep his spot.

To what to attribute the PK struggles of late? Are teams being allowed entry and set up too easily? I feel like too many passes are getting through the box? Any adjustments by HCMS?
Jason Mackey
2:16
Too many passes through the box has been the biggest issue. And there's not a ton to adjustment, honestly. What is HCMS gonna sit them down and say, "Here, let's switch it up and don't let them do this?" They know what to do. They just need to execute it better.

In a perfect game scenario, how many minutes should the fourth line play?  I am surprised at how the other night was only 6 minutes for Wilson and Bluegger and was curious.
Jason Mackey
2:17
Tough to say because it depends on penalties and how things are called. I don't think there's an ideal range or anything like that. Should be based on how the game plays out, but you don't want those guys sitting for long stretches, I know that.

How does it work with Gonch during the playoffs? Is he with the team full time during that period of time?
Jason Mackey
2:17
I would imagine so, yes.

I noticed Phil as a part of the trio (Crosby and Malkin the others) giving Cullen his awards the other night.  Do you put any meaning in that?  I am hopeful it’s a sign of how integral Phil is to the Pens outside of just his play during games.
Jason Mackey
2:18
Yeah, I think there's some significance to that. Phil is an incredibly well-liked part of this team. By all accounts, he's an incredibly funny guy that teammates love. Cullen especially. Phil is close with the Cullen family, and I think that's what you saw there more than anything.

Do you think Guentzel will soon take over for Hornqvist on the first powerplay? His hands are phenomenal.
Jason Mackey
2:19
They need what Hornqvist brings in that spot, honestly, But I would not be surprised if, depending on situation, maybe Sullivan got a little bit more liberal with the rotation.

Just read that LV won’t be losing a player in the Seattle expansion draft. What the..? They have as good a roster as anyone, went cup final for crying out loud, and already got so many concessions when they came in! And now they’ll be able to take advantage of teams who are boxed into a corner. Totally unfair advantage.
Jason Mackey
2:23
Yeah, I was fine with how they started; I don't think the NHL stacked the rules or anything like that. But they're a part of the league now. Vegas should be subject to everyone else's rules as far as losing a player.

Any hope of getting rid of the 3 point games in the NHL. Only major league in the USA that rewards losing
Jason Mackey

I wouldn't hold your breath.

How come Trotman over Riikola?
Jason Mackey
2:24
Because he's played better, frankly. Trotman has been very good. The question I've been asking is what the heck Trotman has been doing in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. Had they given him a chance previously, they could've just dumped Pearson's salary for a late-round pick.
Thanks Dannnn

Hey Jason, if you had the pool from NHL and AHL Pitt teams, what is your ideal lineup?
Jason Mackey
2:25
What is there now. I wouldn't be playing any AHL guy over NHL players. And I don't know enough about the AHL club to say what it's ideal lineup should be.

2:25
How many points (0-4) do you think the Pens will get against the Jackets these next two games?
Jason Mackey
2:25
They need 2. Would be a huge bonus to get three or four. Four would go a long way toward getting in that 2-3 spot, where I think they will -- and need to -- end up.

Did you see Carrie Underwood at the game on Tuesday?  She and Fisher were at the game to honor Cullen.   Must've been tough for them to come back into the place that denied them the Cup.
Jason Mackey
2:27
I did not, but that's cool. I know the Cullens and Underwoods are very good friends. It is an interesting little nugget. I'll have to remember to ask Matt about that.

starkey had a good article today about how Malkin is taken for granted and that is a good point.  It got me thinking about how the Pens were probably lucky the year they drafted Malkin that they were not first because if they were able to draft Ovi I don't think that works out as well as Malkin has with Sid.  We are very blessed here in Pittsburgh!
Jason Mackey
2:27
Yes. And yet somehow people forget that. If they drafted Ovi, I don't think he would've handled being Sid's 1a as well as Malkin has.

How far do you realistically expect the Pens to go in the playoffs this year? I'm pretty confident we'll make it in, just not sure how far in.
Jason Mackey
2:28
I see them going to the Eastern Conference final. At this point, though, I have a tough time picking them to beat Tampa.
Don

Columbus looks like a hot mess right now.   They traded about half the team at the deadline (or what seemed like it).   Too much?  Or just not enough time to develop the necessary chemistry yet?
Jason Mackey
2:28
I think it's putting too much pressure on themselves after the deadline. I think they're going to be fine. I still think the Jackets will make the playoffs ... although I think they're going to lose in the first round to the Penguins.
