I like all three, believe me. If their current teams are willing to deal for a reasonable rate, I'd say go. Last I heard Toronto wanted Dumo. That's not happening.

Will the defense step up and play more physical in front of 2 very inexperienced goalies?  They tend to do a lot of chasing when applying the body would slow opposing forwards.
Jason Mackey
2:22
I think this could be interesting. Wouldn't be the first time a change in goal spurred a team to play a more responsible brand of hockey. Could happen here.

Is Malkin close to playing again?
Jason Mackey
2:22
He should be back Friday.
Bruce
2:23
Do you see the Penguins shopping Hagelin as well? With possible Hornqvist extension and Rust raises upcoming, 4 million could be used elsewhere.
Jason Mackey
2:23
Absolutely. But who is gonna pay $4 million for seven goals in 86 games? Nobody.

Why do the Yinzers on this board constantly complain about Reaves. The bottom 6 forwards all have produced little goal output. Reaves was not acquired to score 10-15 Goals. He was acquired to provide some Grit and Pushback. Based on the games I have watched you have not seen as many vicious hits to smaller players (Sheary,Rust,Letang) that have caused them to miss games. It would seem to me Reaves is producing what is asked of him. What say you.
Jason Mackey
2:24
I like what Reaves brings. I do hear from a lot of folks who think that's a wasted spot. I sort of get it. What I don't understand is why they continue to play him against skating teams, games where maybe you don't need him. I also find the complaining futile. Rutherford and Sullivan -- and the players -- love the guy. Nothing's changing here.
Jeff
2:25
How hard do you think Rutherford/Pens pursue a re-sign with Hornqvist? I can see the arguments that his playstyle doesn't lend itself well to a lengthy contract extension, but a lot of stock is placed on his energy and competitiveness.
Jason Mackey
2:25
I think they pursue one, as long as what Hornqvist's camp is asking for isn't outlandish. I honestly don't know of the ask on that side.

What is the correct pronunciation of Jarry?   I noticed the Tom and Jerry cartoon characters on his helmet, so is it pronounced Jerry?  Or are the characters for some other reason?
Jason Mackey
2:25
JAR-ree. Like a Jarry of peanut butter.

Hi Jason - I doubt it since it would be within the division, but were the Pens in on Henrique at all?
Jason Mackey
2:26
I've heard no indications that they were.

Daniel Sprong has solid numbers down in WBS (9 goals, 14 points in 17 games played). But he's also one of only four players on the team with a negative plus/minus rating. Do you feel he will play a role for Pittsburgh this year, or do you feel someone like Simon, Dea or Blueger have a better chance of being called up?
Jason Mackey
2:26
I think Sprong will play a role. If they don't start scoring more goals, it would be soon.

2:26
Why was there no penalty for running into the goalie (Murray)?  It appear no pen player push or touch him.
Jason Mackey
2:27
I don't know. I've been asked this. I don't have an answer for you. It looks like a blown call to me, too. Unfortunately the NHL doesn't let us ask officials why they do or don't do certain things. Would love to hear an explanation, too.

2:27
Hey Jason, if the Pens can't find an immediate trade for Ian, do they start playing him again especially with the goalie issue? Can't imagine the Pens would want worse defense in front of less experienced goalies.
Jason Mackey
2:28
Yes, that's part of it. I also think it's best for everyone involved for Cole to play and for everyone to try to pretend this doesn't exist -- until a move is made. But he's absolutely been one of their best defensemen. Numbers prove that. He should be playing regardless.
John
2:28
What do you make of Cole being paired with Schultz at practice today?  Do you think they are showcasing him by pairing him with his most comfortable d partner?
Jason Mackey
2:29
Could be. I also think that's how you get the most out of him. I think they want to move past this, and that probably affords the easiest way of doing it. Until the deal, of course, not move past and act like it never happened. I still believe they're at least aggressively exploring their trade options with him.
Konstantin Koltsov
2:29
What do you think a realistic return on Ian Cole would be? Love this chat by the way!
Jason Mackey
2:30
Thank you! They should be able to get a third-line player, preferably center, under club control for a couple years at a reasonable rate. One who can score, too. Cole is a really good player. Players like him are in demand. He can afford to be a little choosy.
Paul
2:30
By going back-to-back, some of the players have to be a little burnt out. When a slight injury occurs (think Malkin), do you think the team is more likely to prolong the recovery time and allow the player to get the rest while they can? Thanks for the chat Jason!
Jason Mackey
2:31
Yeah, I think you might be onto something Paul. We're seeing it with Sid, Letang and Phil skipping morning skates. There does seem to be a tacit understanding that they've played a lot of hockey, and they're going to try and get some rest any way they can. This injury for Malkin in the playoffs ... yeah, he's playing.
Chad
2:31
Jason, has there been any interest at all with evander kane? Seems like he could be a solid fit on the wing.  Character concerns might be why we’d be hesitant to inquire.
Jason Mackey
2:31
Ding, ding, ding.

Pens need a center but they still seem loaded for another cup run. Rust and others are difference makers. They score 4 the Pens score five. Love the offense and they are the best ever at it! Go Pens!
Jason Mackey
2:31
Thanks for chipping in, Alan.

Is there a sense of urgency starting to permeate the team? A third of the way through the season, they're a game north of seventh place in the division (by points percentage).
Jason Mackey
2:32
I think there's a sense of being a little pissed off they're not better. Maybe that's urgency. Maybe that's taking pride in what you do.
John
2:32
You mentioned Marron earlier, Does a Maroon for Cole trade make sense to you?
Jason Mackey
2:32
It does. So long as Maroon can skate. But the dude produced with McDavid last season. Can't be that bad, right?
alan smith
2:32
The Pens are coming on every game. Crosby has no match! As long as he plays they will always be contenders. They can't play at the same level as Cup play demands. Broken hands, destroyed bodies and blood! The team will be there when it counts!
Jason Mackey
2:33
I'm OK with the odd comment here and there, but dude, you're hijacking my chat.

You've touched a little on the WBS callup aspect.  What about Thomas DiPauli?  Penguins seemed to like his speed and defensive work, and he's off to hot start scoring wise in WBS.  Would seem like a good LW/C callup for the 4th line.  As for Sprong, not sure I agree he's ready for a try.  He was leading the AHL in scoring to start the season, but has been pointless for a good number of games now.  He also had 5 of his 9 goals on the powerplay, which he is doubtful to get much PP time on this team.
Jason Mackey
2:34
Good point on Sprong. That worries me, too. And you're right on Di Pauli. I'd counter with this: If Archibald isn't playing -- and they're similar players -- what does Di Pauli bring that Archibald doesn't? Maybe scoring, but Archibald hasn't even gotten the chance.
Dave

What would it take to get Maroon?
