Observations from last night: 1) Man, when these teams play, what intensity, what great hockey. 2) Glad Letang is on our team, an absolute beast of a hockey player; 3) Is it me or does Murray have a problem with the area between his arms and body, where the puck always seems to leak through
Jason Mackey
1:58
What sort of problem would that be? That he doesn't have another limb there? There's only so many areas to shoot at. That's one of them with him. I don't think it's a "problem."

I know Guentzel is not in Malkin's league, but what message does that send to bench Guentzel mid game for a bad mistake but Malkin has made many bad mistakes this season with no consequence?
Jason Mackey
1:59
Malkin played 14:30ish last night. Wouldn't say he was benched, but Malkin has had his ice time cut, too. But, yeah, we're talking professional sports here. Guentzel makes < $1 million. Malkin makes $9.5 million. Rules are going to be different.

Will we ever see the day where fighting is completely outlawed in the game? Although it is down dramatically from the 70s-90s, it still detracts from what should be considered a top three sport!
Jason Mackey

I agree, Matt, but I honestly don't think it will ever go away. It's always been a part of hockey, and I think there are too many in favor of it to ever take it out.

What teams need a player like 19 so we can give them him
Jason Mackey
2:00
Ha. I do think Brassard could fit a lot of places. I'm just not convinced it'll be here.

Johnson and Pettersson have been playing extremely sheltered minutes since the trade?  Meanwhile the Oleksiak-Maatta pairing has been getting tougher deployments.  Has Pettersson shown enough for Sullivan to move him up the lineup?
Jason Mackey
2:01
We may find out tonight, to be honest. ... Although if I were Sullivan, I might just bring in Riikola and play him with Maatta. The Finns have been good together.

Why is it so hard for the Pens to find a 3rd center that fits?
Jason Mackey
2:02
Because they're trying to check a lot of boxes. A little offense. A little PK and defense. Preferably play with speed, although in Bonino's case, know how to function otherwise with smart outlets and using people like Hagelin and Kessel to your advantage. Be OK playing on the third line and fewer minutes because of 87 and 71 and also with less favorable wingers.
John

Why all the obsession with Brassard? Real question. So much else going on with this team and everyone asking the same question.
Jason Mackey
2:02
I can't tell people what to ask, John.

Who do you think have been their best bottom sixers? Like rank ZAR, Cullen, Grant, Pearson, Sheehan, Rust, Simon, Wilson, etc
Jason Mackey
2:03
Rust, Simon, Pearson, ZAR, Sheahan, Cullen, Grant, Wilson.
Albert

Why is the NHL the only league that allows fighting? It's a joke! It disrupts the game, it is so contrived, its a horrible example for young fans... football is far more physical/violent, yet they don't need to police themselves with in-game fighting.
Jason Mackey
2:03
Man, people are hating on fighting today. Interesting.

Do u think Jack Johnson has been trying to teach the other Dman when not to pinch?
Jason Mackey
2:03
I'm guessing no.
Rachel
2:03
I think ZAR has been doing great!! Maybe that's just me
Jason Mackey
2:03
I think ZAR has been good, too. He's at least a lineup regular, IMO.

What’s the secret sauce to get Malkin/Kessel up to their standard?
Jason Mackey
2:04
Thousand Island and ketchup.

Where can I find specific times of individual hockey players skating specific distances--something like NFL listing each player's time in the 40. Is there no absolute way to determine which team is faster?
Jason Mackey
2:04
There is not, to my knowledge.
Bobby
2:04
What does Jack Johnson need to do to get scratched?   He's tried, repeated pushing his teammates into his goalie, prioritizing hitting over proper positioning, repeatedly shooting the puck into the defender in front of him, and disrupting any puck movement in the offensive zone.     It really looks like he's doing everything he can to have a nice seat in the press box.  Maybe he should try kicking Sullivan's dog next?
Jason Mackey
2:05
They're not going to scratch Jack Johnson. I'm also refusing to blame everything on him. Past nine games he's been on the ice for fewer five-on-five goals against than Letang, Dumoulin, Maatta and Oleksiak. Just four. That's not terrible.
Olli
2:05
Mack...I have not been standing out lately, pretty good deal eh?
Jason Mackey
2:05
Yes, Olli. Nice work.

I'm very thankful the Pens have won 3 Cups in the Sid era.  But with their barren farm, aging roster, and ton of money dedicated to a suspect defense, I have a hard time seeing them as a serious contender for a while.  Your thoughts?
Jason Mackey
2:06
I don't agree. They have some players in Wilkes, they're roster isn't aging, and I think they're closing to being a competitor.

What happens to the defence when Schultz is back? Do the Penguins keep all seven of Letang, Dumoulin, Schultz, Maatta, Pettersson, Johnson, and Oleksiak?
Jason Mackey
2:06
I think you'll probably see a trade if someone isn't injured.
FR
2:06
Rudolph, Frosty, or the Grinch?  Who's your favorite?
Jason Mackey
2:06
Grinch.
Joe
2:06
Do you think rusty will stay on the first line. I don't think coach can resist Simon.
Jason Mackey
2:06
Yes, I do.
Aljohn
2:06
JohnAl is an imposter but I also like brassard. And so do a lot of pens fans with the capacity to see him for what he is and actually understand the game.
Jason Mackey
2:07
Thank you for that.
