Jason Mackey's Penguins chat: 4.19.18

I don't. I think his value is greatest to the Penguins. Thirty-one goals in the AHL ... eh, I don't think teams are going to fall all over themselves to get that guy, and the Penguins don't have an obvious need where they have to give to get. I think you keep all the scoring wingers you can. Like starting pitching. You can never have enough.

JR saving money on Kessel and Brassard deals for 1+ seasons. Who might he snake next year? A top-6 winger or a top-4 D?
Jason Mackey
3:18
I could see Rutherford adding on defense this offseason. Maybe a depth guy. I wouldn't look at the Penguins and say they have any serious holes come July 1. Will be some restricted guys to get done, but that's about it.

I really like Tom Kuhnhackl's game right now. Looks like the best he's ever played. Thoughts?
Jason Mackey
3:19
I agree with you: I liked his game. Especially during the four-minute kill when Malkin took the double minor. Kuhnhackl is great on the PK. Has been a pretty good fit on that fourth line. Best he's ever played was probably with Cullen and Fehr during the 2016 Cup run, but he's been decent, I'll give you that.

Are the Pens stronger or weaker entering this year's playoffs than they were in 16 or 17?
Jason Mackey
3:20
Tough to say generally, Jimmie. I think they're better offensively. Maybe even deeper with Brassard. I think their defense is less, but Matt Murray is playing some of his best hockey, which I think negates that. Special teams are clicking ... it's hard to compare to the other two years.

are you surprised the flyers have been so docile?  I expected goon tactics last night - if nothing more than to appease the fans.
Jason Mackey
3:21
Yeah, I agree. Seems like they're ready to get on with the offseason.

Have you ever seen any alliteration fails from your editors, in your past? (we'll say your current editors are all top notch).  When the Colorado Avalanche won the Cup in '01 and Patrick Roy won the MVP, the editor of the local paper (who knows nothing about hockey) went with the headline, "Atta Boy, Roy!"  (oops!)
Jason Mackey
3:21
Could the editor have been talking about Roy Munson? I'm going to pretend he/she was.
3:22
But, no. I've never seen that stuff from our guys. I'm pretty sure Tyler Batiste and Alex Iniguez are incapable of making mistakes.

Thoughts on Wayne Simmonds...he's been a total non factor in this series, and getting 3rd line minutes...injury, age, overall decline?..he was a nightmare to defend net front for the Pens but he's top of the long list of disappearing Flyers this series.
Jason Mackey
3:23
I'm not sure he's healthy. If he is, he might want to re-career. He has been so not noticeable, it's been weird. I keep waiting for him to do something, and ... crickets.

I really love Dumo's game. Moves the puck so well and has been chipping in offensively. What a great underrated defenceman he is.
Jason Mackey
3:23
Agree with you. He's come into his own.
Ryan James

Who's your favorite announcer to listen to during games?
Jason Mackey
3:24
Mike Lange. No. 2 would be Jim Hughson.
Jon

how can you say Sheary has been good?  I’d be surprised if he’s not traded in draft day. $3M for no defense and very streak play is not worth it
Jason Mackey
3:24
If he's as bad as you say (he's not), why would someone pay that? You have to put Sheary in the right situations. He's been fine with Brassard, in my opinion. Can he be better? Yes. But I'm not about to bench him.

Everyone is talking as though the Pens' first round series is over. I remember them losing series in 2010 (up 3-2 vs Montreal, with home ice), in 2011 (up 3-1 vs NYR, with home ice) and 2014 (up 3-1 vs NYR, with home ice). If Neuvirth stands on his head and the Flyers stars shine, have they got a chance at the seemingly impossible upset?
Jason Mackey
3:26
I think they have a chance, but I don't see the Flyers having enough oopmh left to make it happen. I hear you on blowing leads, but notice none of those incidents occurred under Sullivan. Things are just different with him than they were with Bylsma.

Bender probably refers to John Bender from the '80s movie The Breakfast Club
Jason Mackey

Weird sign then.

Is Sheahan discouraged being on the fourth line given he was playing so well?
Jason Mackey
3:26
Not publicly, anyway. Sheahan is very easygoing. From everything I can decipher, he's incredibly happy in Pittsburgh. Either that's the case, or he hides his displeasure VERY well. I think it's the former, not the latter.

What was the deal with Murray today?  You said that he was shaken up but it seemed like it was no big deal.  By your picture it looked like he got hit where the sun don't shine.
Jason Mackey
3:27
Getting pretty warm.
Jon
3:27
Ok, I should be asking music questions and about your Q score, I guess?
Jason Mackey
3:27
You can ask whatever you want.
Jeff
3:27
What is the deal with the warm up music at PPG arena?  It is absolutley horrible.
Jason Mackey
3:28
It is strange. I have a hard time believing the players picked it. Very metalish, that's for sure.

My son and I are having a debate.  He says if the Penguins win a 3 straight Stanley Cup with Crosby as Conn Smith winner I have to admit Crosby is the Penguins GOAT.  I still say Lemeuix.  What say you?
Jason Mackey
3:28
I still think Lemieux. Had he been healthy, who knows what he would've done. Pure grace, athletic ability ... Lemieux, in the best way possible, was a freak. Not that Crosby isn't tremendous, but some of the stuff Mario did ... that doesn't even look human.

Do you think Neuvirth will start tomorrow’s game?
Jason Mackey
3:29
I do.

Just found a definition for bender:  “widely-used term for players who are terrible at skating and look as if their skates aren’t tied tight enough because their ankles bend”
Jason Mackey

Can we let this go?
