It's not a Lonnie Chisenhall situation. I don't know if we'll ever see another one of those. At the same time, I don't expect him to be ready for opening day.

who will be the Pirates beat reporter once you move up?
Jason Mackey
12:37
Noah Hiles and Andrew Destin for the rest of this season, then we'll determine who stays on Pirates vs. whether Andrew maybe goes back to 50/50 splitting with Pens.

Sorry about that.  If Jones makes the team does Anderson have a chance at the 5th starter or long man?   I just have a hard time seeing the Bucs letting one of the non-option guys go.
Jason Mackey
12:38
I do. I think Anderson has made a positive impression. If this keeps up, I think he's on the team.
Tim
12:38
I would rather see young guys in the 4th and 5th spots than non-roster invitees.  What are your thoughts?
Jason Mackey
12:39
I think Anderson has pitched better than everybody ... and maybe Jones, though I see why you would keep Jones. Together they've been the best two options. Why not go with anyone else? What other young guys have earned it?
Jack

Hey Jason! Have you heard any word on Bednar’s oblique? Maybe something about a weight plan as well to prevent this from occurring in the future?
Jason Mackey
12:39
It was right lat soreness -- and has nothing to do with weight. He's throwing off a mound very soon ... and may have done so already. I'm not worried about it. Was precautionary more than anything.

I know you mentioned the Pham rumors were a surprise to you. Do you think the need for a Pham/MAT-type player exists with the current state of the roster? Seems to me that there are clear, affordable upgrades in free agency.
Jason Mackey
12:40
If they're gonna spend money, awesome. But I think pitching is a much greater need.
I still miss #21
12:40
When can we stop with all the uncertainty and nonsense about letting Henry Davis catch in the big leagues and just play him and let him get on with his career?
Jason Mackey
12:40
Probably opening day.

Who among the prospects that debuted last season still enjoy rookie status for this season?
Jason Mackey
12:44
Believe Gonzales and Alika ... pitcher-wise, Stratton, Selby, Nicolas ... maybe Carmen. Innings-wise, he's there. But I'd have to go back and check service time. Quinn was at exactly 50 IP. He hasn't exceeded the threshold, so would imagine he's still there, too.

I don’t see it as a bad idea for Skenes and Jones to begin the year in the minors. That extra year of control will be huge. What is the date that they have to get to, so they earn that extra year of control?
Jason Mackey
12:44
Thanks for Ethan Hullihen for this, but believe it's 4/12.
Justin
12:44
Ortiz break camp as a SP?
Jason Mackey
12:45
I don't think so.
Jerry
12:45
Jason, excellent retort with the Deal quote.  At certain times, you are alright, man.....
Jason Mackey
12:45
Only certain times, though.
Vinny Williams
12:45
who is this year’s Jared Eickhoff?
Jason Mackey
12:45
The pitcher who winds up costing me a steak dinner to Poni? ... Maybe Eric Lauer? Although Lauer could actually be half-decent.
Cosmo Kramer
12:45
Is the rotation shaping up to be just good enough to get the team to hover around 500 until Skenes and Jones arrive?
Jason Mackey
12:46
I think that's within the realm of possibility, yeah. They should have a good bullpen. If they can score some runs, they're not asking the rotation to be world beaters.
Marshall

Hey Jason, considering Yasmani Grandal’s injury going into the season and his age, how many games do you realistically expect him to be behind the plate? And are the Pirates concerned his injury may linger through the season?
Jason Mackey
12:46
I would imagine they are -- plantar fasciitis doesn't just magically disappear for good, especially not with a catcher. Would think 70 is probably top end for him at this point. Will open the door for Davis.
Ed

Best tips for getting pregame/postgame autographs this season?
Jason Mackey
12:47
Sorry, don't have anything for ya. Obviously not part of my daily routine.
Frank
12:47
Do you happen to know where Jun-Seok Shim is? Kinda expected him to be there at the prospect breakout, was odd to not see him there considering guys like Matoma and Blanco Jr. were. Is he in MiLB camp?
Jason Mackey
12:49
Not in major league camp. I don't have a roster of  the minor league side. I can ask around.
Stash
12:49
Jason, hope I'm wrong, but if The Big Guy struggles defensively, what type of intervention would be needed to at least get him to freaking practice another position?  We're not talking a Penny Kickett ego situation here, or are we?
Jason Mackey
12:50
I think he deserves a season to show what he can do, no? That would be my move. Here's 2024 to prove you can stick. Let's hope you do. If you can't, we're gonna talk about it. Oneil wants to win. If he's not handling his business defensively, I think that's a much different discussion. But he deserves a shot to show he can do it.

12:50
What is it that keeps Alika Williams in the mix on either the 26-man or 40-man roster?
Jason Mackey
12:51
His defense. And I think the fact that the Pirates would rather Peguero & Gonzales get every day at-bats in the minors. If Alika sits on the bench and is there to field well late in games or once a week to spell someone, I think they're much more OK with that.

Looks like Hank Davis will be with the club come April opener.  What happens if the catcher we signed gets better in May? Is Hank sent down?
Jason Mackey
12:55
Depends on how Henry plays. If he's good, absolutely he sticks. If he struggles, then I think it's a different discussion.
Apologies for the lag. Greg Brown came into the media room at LECOM and was asking how the chat works. Ha.
Mister Ed

Kansas City raised their payroll to $160 million this year. Do you think they are an outlier as far as small market teams go and are willing to operate at a deficit this season for some reason or is $160 million perhaps the threshold where a small market team can break even?
Jason Mackey
12:56
I won't pretend to know what the Royals are doing. I do think that's outside of where the Pirates are comfortable going. They talk a lot about a narrow band. They wanna get to a point to where it doesn't bottom out ... but they're also probably not going to $160 million. Note: I'm not endorsing the idea. Just answering the question and explaining.
