Don't say I don't give you options.
Aw man, now the Rowdy Tellez people (they're EVERYWHERE) are going to give me grief.

When do dodger fans consider me a bust?
Tim Dierkes

If it's on April 9, then those fans are dumb.

I get that most people understands that Acuna signed a very club friendly extension, thus leaving several millions on the table in several would be free agent years. But he being just 21, with an injury scare last year, and just over 500K made in the bigs, you just can't blame him for taking the security of a 100 million contract. What's your take on this?
Tim Dierkes
2:37
There's Jeff Todd's take, with which I agree.  Basically, he should have taken the Eloy Jimenez route: lock in $60MM (which is just as life-changing as $100MM imo), and give up only one free agent year instead of four.  What Acuna did just makes no sense.
2:38
Damn, where is the love for Trent Thornton?  It's all about the RPMs

Several years ago the White Sox got off to a hot start and quickly faded.  Is this a case study in why to make power moves when staked to a hot start?  I could see Mariners crashing in much the same way.
Tim Dierkes
2:40
I don't think there are a lot of power moves to be made in April, because more players become available later and prices come down.  The calculus is how do you get this 81 team closer to that 88 win range?  Because 87 might mean a surprising season but still no playoffs.  It is so hard to add seven wins midseason, so Dipoto just needs to look at everything he can do that doesn't sacrifice much in the long-term.

My dad has some money as a safety net, just in case. I'd say I'm less inclined to be bargained into signing a ridiculous contract like Acuna.
Tim Dierkes
2:41
Yes, when your dad earned over $125MM, you're probably in good position to not take a deal like Acuna did.

Why trade Pillar now, when his value is at a recent low? Why not just hold on to see if he regains some value and if not, just keep him in CF to help out my young pitching staff
Tim Dierkes

Clear more salary, is my guess.
Acuna
2:42
Or maybe Acuna isnt freddy like some other baseball players. He may also like the Braves a lot to stay there the rest of his career. It's not always about the money for some people
Tim Dierkes
2:42
Acuna simply made a bad business decision.  He didn't keep his options open.

Tim, I’m feeling a bit down about where African-Americans stand in the game today. I appreciate the attention being brought to the issue, but at times it seems like lip service. Every decision-making level, from ownership to front office to player development to scouting, is embarrassingly barren of representation. My team, known for homegrown players, hasn’t developed an A-A regular in decades. Give me a glimmer of hope looking forward! I love the game but wonder why so few ppl look like me within it
Tim Dierkes
2:43
I wish I had something positive for you on that, but I don't.  African Americans in the game are way down from where it had been and it's a real problem for the sport.

Do you think people are just voting Christin Stewart coz they think it's the chick from Twilight?

Please try to relax Cubs and Red Sox fans. If both teams are under .500 at the break, then it might be time to panic. But neither team will be under .500 at the break.
Tim Dierkes
2:44
No actually, Cubs fans should panic.  They are now in a toss-up with the Cards and Brewers, and they had been the division favorite.

How would you grade the Quintana trade for the cubs if Eloy and Cease turn into above average regulars and Q continues to produce 4.00+ ERA's? I didn't like the trade at the time and it keeps looking worse.

2 years $28 million with 3rd yr option get Keuchel to Mets?
Tim Dierkes
2:46
The trade looks pretty bad now and has a chance to become historically bad.  That is total hindsight, though, because I don't remember objecting when it happened.
Oops, that answer is for the Quintana question.
As to 2/28 getting Keuchel, I think yes it would.  I don't really see the Mets investing like that in him.

Are teams going to start backing off these contract extensions with players signing them then getting hurt so quickly? Hicks, Sale, Severino
Tim Dierkes
2:46
I think that's just a coincidence.

Why do the White Sox keep getting worse?  Generally, rebuilding squads show slight improvement from year to year, with marked improvement in the third or fourth year (see the Cubs, Astros, and perhaps now Padres); the White Sox keep losing more with each passing season.  Does the blame fall on Kenny Williams and Rick Hahn, or Ricky Renteria?  A team with that many prospects can't miss on all of them.
Tim Dierkes
2:48
I don't know that a rebuild needs to show linear progress.  You have your tanking years, and then you have your window open when you're trying to win.  That window HAS to open in 2020 for the White Sox.  Reinsdorf is loyal to a fault but one would think Hahn and Williams will be out of power if the team isn't good in 2020.

Would the Cubs not have been better off declining the option on Hamels and trying to bring him back at a cheaper AV? How much would he have been worth on the open market?
Tim Dierkes
2:50
At the beginning of the offseason, I was thinking 2/30 made sense.  Hamels might have even been amenable to less, given the Rangers paying him a $6MM buyout.  That approach may have damaged the Cubs' relationship with the Rangers if it happened immediately, though.

How furious are the players with all this club friendly extensions, especially Acuña's? Can't blame him for taking the security of 100 million
Tim Dierkes
2:50
I imagine the players are happy for him, but the agents and union realize how unhelpful it is for the collective.

So tigers cannot contend at 7-3 in a weak division, but mariners are the "real deal" at 10-2 in a much stronger division? Please explain.
Tim Dierkes
2:52
It's just based on the amount of talent on each roster and what each player is projected to do.  Aside from maybe Matt Boyd, I don't see someone who we should think is headed toward a sustainable breakout season.

What does my multiyear deal look like on AAV? 4 years 50-60?
Tim Dierkes
2:53
If he signs during this season, I'm thinking 1-2 years at $15-17MM per.  Even that is hard for most teams to squeeze in right now.

What kind of value could Puig bring Cincinnati if he is hitting over .260 at the allstar break?
