Lorddale, I have some bad news for you. I think the Pirates are probably going to be sellers again next season.
Brian
3:16
Do you think Erik Gonzalez gets traded? Seems like he would have value to a team like the Blue Jays who are looking for SS help... Can't imagine pirates expected him to play this well and should get whatever they can for him in my opinion
Mike Persak
3:18
I think they really like Erik Gonzalez and want to keep him around for a while. Really good defensively, and I'm not sure the market is huge for him right now anyways. Would be shocked to see him go in the next 45 minutes.

Hi guys thanks for the chat! Pirate fans should not be optimistic that management will be getting  great prospects at this deadline. I think the Pirate fan should be expect the club to make trades that clear the way for some of their younger players to get playing time (Hayes Cruz and Tucker). They need to build through the draft and obtain pieces through trades down the road whenever they’re close to fielding a competitive team. What say you all?
Adam Bittner

Think you have to like the Pirates' return for Starling Marte knowing what Arizona reportedly got today. Neither of the names mentioned seem to be a whole lot more than organizational depth. Granted, Peguero and Malone are still lottery tickets at this point. But there seems like much more room for long-term payoff.
Mike Persak
3:20
All's quiet so far, so things seem to be trending toward the Pirates not being huge sellers today. Things can change, though. I agree with you that the Pirates could really use some more prospect depth. The draft helps, but trades do too. Pirates could use as many bullets as possible.

Is there any team who would take Polanco?
Mike Persak
3:20
Doesn't seem likely, but who knows? I've said this before: I think Polanco is the kind of guy who has more value to the Pirates than anybody else, both because he's struggled recently and because the Pirates have put all this time into trying to mold him
John

They should have traded Bell in the offseason when his stock was all-time high.  He is too inconsistent.
Mike Persak
3:22
I get your point, but idk, man. After last season, I was excited about his potential in the coming years. Plenty of time to return to his old form, and I don't think people should be mad that the Pirates are going to be patient with him. First half of last year earned him that much, at least.
Bill
3:23
Do you think that the bitterness of the fanbase for deals in the past few years influences Cherington in any way?
Adam Bittner
3:23
If anything, I think the pandemic situation gives Cherington more latitude to operate without worrying about public opinion. Can't sell tickets right now anyway. And when they can, presumably in 2021, many people will probably be thrilled just to be at the ballpark, regardless of how crummy the team is. Probably also helps that there's not really anyone on this roster that I think most fans would consider untouchable.
Mike Persak
3:25
Believe it or not, Bill, Cherington's actually been asked about that very thing. His point of view is that the Pirates shouldn't feel like they have to make trades at all, because that puts them in a desperate state and makes them privy to mistakes. Has said he's confident that the fanbase will get behind the Pirates when there's a good product on the field, whatever the methods are for getting that product out there.

So do you suppose the Pirates will spend the money they get from the salary dumps they'll do this afternoon on a news ski lift or a snow machine ?
Mike Persak
3:29
I don't think there's a salary dump coming. But if I were in charge of an organization and stumbled into a bunch of money from a salary dump, I'd buy a snow machine. Even if I had nowhere to put it, they're just cool.

Is Stallings the highest valued Pirate right now, in terms of tradeability?

A trade of Gonzalez or Frazier would cause an opening for Hayes. But if neither is traded does Riddle go?
Mike Persak
3:30
Eh, I'm not sure on Stallings. Maybe, but it doesn't seem likely he's going to be traded. Also think the younger guys like Reynolds or Newman or Bell would, in theory, fetch more of a return, though none are really being shopped around, it seems
Jason Mackey
3:30
Go where? Now that's the Riddle. Sorry, I had to make that joke once. I think there are a lot of hypotheticals here. I do think Gonzalez or Frazier will be gone. But, yeah, if they're not, I think it would make sense to move Riddle; you need to play Hayes and get him experience.

It's the year 2079, 100 years since the last World Series victory for the Bucs..I like our chances..are we buyers?
Mike Persak
3:32
Think the prospects probably will have developed by then, so yeah.
Yuri
3:33
Is it more likely the Pirates make more trades in the offseason than they might make before the current deadline?
Jason Mackey
3:34
I think that's entirely possible, Yuri. And it's probably out of their control. If they're not getting anything reasonable for what they have, I suppose I get wanting to not force anything.
Fred
3:34
Would a Keone Kela trade yielded the Pirates a top ten and a top 15 similar to what the previous closer markets have been in the past deadlines. Bums me out that two straight years the pirates miss out on getting suitable return for a role that seems overvalued by some.
Jason Mackey
3:35
Definitely not, Fred. Had Kela been pitching and pitching lights-out, I think so. But not now.
Justin
3:35
With the return that Austin Nola got from the Padres, should the Pirates seriously consider moving Jacob Stallings? He's 30 already and he will probably be 33 or 34 by the time the Pirates could potentially start contending again.
Adam Bittner
3:35
Jason Mackey
3:35
Haven't they done that? I mean, he's starting most games. He's produced, too.
Josh
3:35
Why don’t the pirates just go all in for stallings as a viable starting catcher?  I feel he has done enough to warrant that.  He is not terribly old either for the control they have with him.

3:36
Speaking of Marte, how are those prospects we received from AZ looking?  Hoping they take the sting away from the lackluster Archer/Cole returns.
Jason Mackey
3:36
So far so good. They're young. It'll be a bit before we know more. But nobody is sitting here saying Ben didn't get anything for Marte. They certainly have tools.
Dirk Diggler
3:36
Has anyone talked with Dyson since being moved? How happy was he to get out?
Mike Persak
3:37
Austin Nola kind of has the same career arc as Jacob Stallings. Both 30, both really broke in at the same time, both hit .260ish last season. Both hitting above .300 this year. Kinda wild. But I do think they are different situations. The Pirates have no catcher depth, and whether you're competing or not, you need a catcher. Better to have Stallings, whose defense can help get young pitchers going in the next few years.
Jason Mackey
3:37
We have not. He wasn't the most eager to talk with the media. I wanted to give it a couple days to let it breathe.
Danny
3:37
Will Trevor Williams be starting for the Pirates tonight?
Jason Mackey
3:38
As of now I'd say yes. I've gotten no indication they're close with anything on him.
Dan
3:38
Hey Jason, thanks as always for doing this ... before things start heating up, I was wondering what you thought of the new Train song "Rescue Dog" ... they released it a couple months back to raise money for charity and I thought you'd mentioned being a fan of theirs a couple years back. thought it blended their old and new sound pretty well. also what do you think the cieling is on Jared Oliva
Jason Mackey
3:39
I have not heard it. Keep meaning to check out some "Train." Just never seem to have the time. ... Very high on Oliva. Potential leadoff guy, center fielder fun to watch. Certainly every-day player. Occasional pop. I like him a lot.
Paul
3:39
Here’s a name that I haven’t seen in rumors, yet could be the pirate’s best tradable asset: Stallings. Good defender, swinging a hot bat. It’s not like he’s the catcher of the future for the Bucs with his age. Surprised by the lack of reported interest?
Dan
3:39
guess i should say that my question about Train and Jared Oliva goes out to Adam and Mark too
