MLB trade deadline chat: 08.31.20

A little, but I wouldn't be in favor of dealing with Stallings. One, because he's cheap. Two, he's a good, level-headed person to have in the clubhouse. Three, he's a terrific defensive catcher for a young -- and occasionally struggling -- pitching staff. I think that counts for something, having the confidence in your guy to block a curveball in the dirt, etc. I just think a trade would be forcing it with him, and I'd rather have him around.
Who's Mark?
Mike Persak
3:41
My name is Mike. I'll get that recognition eventually. After a cursory google search, the video for Rescue Dog has lots of dogs in the music video. That's tight. Also Patrick Monahan (lead singer) kinda looks like Jason Bateman. Those are my thoughts. What was that next part again? Jared Oliva? Oh yeah, his ceiling is high.

Will the buccos deal polanco or Frazier before todays deadline?
Mike Persak
3:43
Polanco seems unlikely, maybe Frazier
Mr Sunshine
3:43
So how can a franchise utterly devoid of talent like the Pirates offer anything to trade ? Maybe a new field tarp ? A popcorn machine to be named later ?
Jason Mackey
3:43
Yep. It's the popcorn machine, for sure. You nailed it.

3:43
Any news on Frazier or Trevor William's being traded before 4pm deadline?
Jason Mackey
3:44
Nothing, Dan. Things are quiet at PNC, from what I've been hearing.
Paul

Would now be the time to trade off someone like a González? With a bunch of SS climbing the prospect ladder, and González playing solid, wouldn’t now be the time to “sell while he’s high?”
Jason Mackey
3:44
Yes. I'd absolutely move Gonzalez if I could. The question is whether they can.
JJ
3:44
Would any of the Pirates starters you said could be on the move really bring back much in return?
Warren
3:44
I have great hops for Colin Moran - and it’s a real bummer re his concussion.  Two things: how did this injury happen.  Secondly, do you see him implanting himself as a major middle order bat in this franchise
Jason Mackey
3:45
Yeah, they could. I mean, not like the Braves' top 2-3 prospects or anything nuts. But starter-hungry teams would give the Pirates something for Musgrove, Williams and, to a lesser degree, Kuhl.
GH
3:45
Are the Braves still interested in Musgrove?
Jason Mackey
3:45
I haven't heard anything different.
Ryan
3:45
How many trades do you see the Pirates doing?
Jason Mackey
3:45
Not very many at this point. One? Two? Unless something changes in a hurry.
Mike Persak
3:45
Warren: He was concussed on a collision with Avisail Garcia against the Brewers last week. And yes, I think so. He's still just 27. People (me) forget that, I think.

Should fans root for the Pirates to lose and get the top pick or win and get maybe the 3rd pick?
Mike Persak
3:46
Life's too short to hope your team loses. If it happens, fine, but my opinion is that people should want the Pirates to win every game they play.
Paul
3:47
Not a deadline question, but how short of a leash do Eckstein and Rabelo have right now with the way the team is batting? Practically everyone near or below the Mendoza line, including Bell, Reynolds, Polanco and Frazier.

Mike, cap space? Lol!
Mike Persak
3:48
Yeah, misspoke or mistyped or whatever. You know what I meant lol
Jason Mackey
3:48
I think, at minimum, you need to let the season play out and maybe even more, honestly. Right now we're talking about one bad month, with Josh Bell potentially snapping out of it. I don't even know how comfortable I am with two months.
Chief Powhatan
3:49
Are you sick of 7-inning doubleheaders yet?  Do they even count saves?
Adam Bittner
3:49
I personally love the doubleheaders. They've led to more afternoon baseball, which I'll gobble up now that we're all stuck at home.

As a practical matter, interested to see if MLB considers holding onto them for 2021 and beyond, both for their potential to help trim the length of the season without lopping off games and/or give players more off days.
Mr Sunshine
3:49
How many more times do the Pirates get no hit this year ? 3 ? 4 ?
Mike Persak
3:50
Your name is deceiving, Mr Sunshine. Nah, I don't think we see any more no-hitters this season, though I am rooting for a seven-inning perfect game to see how people react.
Ryan
3:50
How many trades do you think the Pirates will do?
Mike Persak
3:50
Well, we've got 10 minutes. 1? Maybe?

Wouldn’t a rotation of Tallion, Keller, Musgrove, Williams and one of Kuhl, Brault or Brubaker be pretty solid?  Even if we subtract one here at the deadline.   Next years rotation would still be better than this years.
Mike Persak
3:51
Completely agree. Plus the younger guys coming up in the next few seasons.
3:52
Some more fodder for you all

Will Starling Marte be traded to the Yankees?
Mike Persak
3:54
Already went to the Marlins (I know these questions are from an hour ago. I'm sorry)
JJ
3:54
Has Osuna's name come up at all in trade rumors? He's a solid bench guy with some versatility that a contender could find appealing. It would be nice to see him get a good stretch of regular playing time to see what he can do.
Mike Persak
3:54
Not that we've heard. I think he's got good potential, too, but probably not a big trade piece.
Yinzers

What's the likelihood of Holland being traded - as a serviceable starter/bullpen arm - given that he's also a FA at the end of the year?
