Sorry y'all, I just figured out how mediocre Sonny Gray has been with the Yankees.

Imagine hearing two years ago that the Pirates, Brewers and Braves were frontrunners for a real major league baseball pitcher.
Chris Vegas

Any interest in Dozier?  I feel like the twins could sell a rental for cheap and Dozier would add a ton of pop.
Stephen J. Nesbitt
1:11
Could be a great add to the bench, or to play behind Harrison. He's been rather sub-par this year, but great in the past. If you can buy low, that's worth asking about.
Rob

Pirates HAVE to trade for an front of the rotation starter.  We've shown over the years that they are unable to develop their own.  Why are we to believe it would be any different with Keller?
Stephen J. Nesbitt
1:12
Keller has more polish than most every young pitcher they've brought up except for Taillon.
And Cole.
Sean Gentille
1:12
A crazy idea would be to bring up Keller and let him do what he's actually good at.
It's a wild approach, but worth a shot.

I don't understand the obsession with these strikeout pitchers. I understand K's are sexy and get everyone excited, but these guys are  at 100+ pitches by the 6th inning. Give me the strikeout machine as a reliever, not as a starter.
Stephen J. Nesbitt
1:12
It's a good trick to have up your sleeve.
Sean Gentille
1:13
Development is less the issue than what actually happens to guys once they are here.
Stephen J. Nesbitt
1:13
But, yes, pitch efficiency and low pitch counts are important. What I like about strikeout pitchers is not that they'll strike out everyone, but they have pitches that can miss bats. If you're relying only on ground balls, that's a scary life.

Let's pretend the Pirates strikeout on today and get nada extra. They're *Probably* not making the playoffs, right? Are there any offseason adds they could make now that aren't available now? Because tbh, an Archer move feels like more help for next year than this year.
Stephen J. Nesbitt
1:13
Bryce Harper will be a free agent. People forget that.
Sean Gentille
1:14
I can't believe people want Chris Archer this badly, a year after Gerrit Cole was run out of town on a rail.
Like, I've been thinking about it for almost 24 hours now.
Where's Liz?
1:14
So, do you think if all the Bucs do is acquire Kela, is that enough to keep the clubhouse satisfied? (Like "hey, at least they did something!") Or are they demanding more this year from management?
Stephen J. Nesbitt
1:15
I think the clubhouse will be fine. The players I spoke with recently all said basically the same thing. It would be nice if they added, but I get why they wouldn't. I think there will be a couple moves today to add to the edges — middle relief, bench — and anything more than that is a bonus.
The fact we're talking about them adding would have *shocked* all of us earlier this month.
Chris

Yes or no prediction. Meadows goes in the next 3.5 hours
Stephen J. Nesbitt
1:16
Again, I'll always air on the side of no with the Pirates.
Rob
1:16
Pirates trade for Tony Watson.  What do ya think?!?
Sean Gentille
1:17
They should pick up Juan Nicasio.
Stephen J. Nesbitt
1:17
Watty's back. I think a package deal of him, McCutchen, Gorkys and Hanson is in the offing.
Wayward
1:17
Do guys Holmes, Eppler, Brubaker have value?  Obviously not the kind to center a deal around but the kind that kind that could be included with a Top 5-10 guy to get a deal done?
Stephen J. Nesbitt
1:17
Value, yes. But they're not the conversation starters.
Morty
1:17
Is Brault untradable, undemotable, or just too firmly planted in the circle of trust for mop up detail?
Stephen J. Nesbitt
1:18
He's demote-able, but not a real asset on the trade market. He is what he is right now — a long reliever.
Not gonna win you games. They're probably already lost anyway.
Rob
1:18
Do you think Luplow would be in the talks for a SP, considering we have our 4 OFs
Stephen J. Nesbitt
1:19
I don't think teams are licking their chops to add Jordan Luplow.

What if the pirates are really in line for Dri Archer?
Stephen J. Nesbitt
1:19
If it brings this chat Steelers-level clicks, I'm all for it.
Nephen Stesbitt
1:20
If the Pirates were to trade Meadows, what are the chances of them trying to extend Dickerson?
Sean Gentille
1:20
It'd be really funny to see Dri Archer play baseball. I'd expect a lot of drag bunts, then trips four steps down the line.
Stephen J. Nesbitt
1:20
Decent. They don't have a ton of outfield depth in the minors.
Creme Brule
1:20
Do you think the Pirates should sign Dickerson long term if he is interested?
Stephen J. Nesbitt
1:21
If they trade Austin Meadows, sure. But Dickerson has been a pretty up-and-down ballplayer in his day, so you might not want to extend him during a hot streak and overpay.
Jake
1:21
Even with adding Kela and possibly Archer, is that enough to make the Pirates serious contenders?
