They're not the Cubs, but they're closer.
Mark C.
1:21
Sean, the difference is, the fans were given the impression that Cole didn't want to be here, that is why people soured on him.
Sean Gentille
1:22
Respectfully, who cares? Cole is better than Archer now, and he was better last year. People were lined up to drive him to the airport. It was excessive.
1:23
And the ad hoc justification of the trade by loyalists was almost as bad. Musgrove is fine. Everything else? Eh.
Stephen J. Nesbitt
1:23
People soured on Cole long before word bubbled up that he was unhappy. Fans thought he was a hothead, lost his cool in big moments, gave up too many dingers and wasn't living up to his potential.
Sean Gentille
1:23
And now it feels like half of those same people are ready to sell the farm to, again, get a guy whose ceiling is "almost as good as Gerrit Cole." It's bizarre.
1:24
Fans were not rational about Gerrit Cole. At all.
Mike
1:24
Indians need a centerfielder if we gave them meadows do they have a controllable starter that would interest NH?
Mark C.
1:25
When are fans ever rational?
Stephen J. Nesbitt
1:25
The Indians have starting pitching, but not enough to give one of them (Shane Bieber?) away, I don't think. And I'm not sure they'd want to ride into the playoffs trusting a rookie with scattered experience in center field.
Sean Gentille
1:25
I mean, some are. I shouldn't generalize that much. But there a large, vocal group that seemed to hate Cole's guts, and I always found it strange. Anywho.

Do you think Jung Ho has any value right now?
Sean Gentille
1:26
No.
Stephen J. Nesbitt
1:26
I actually laughed out loud.
Sean Gentille
1:26
He did, it was loud as hell.
Most restraint I've showed in my career, maybe.

If the pirates trade for Gorkys they will once again lead the league in "guys named Gorkys"
Will this be another "we offered what we thought was fair" type situation like with Price? Because I am really tired of getting my hopes up.
Stephen J. Nesbitt
1:27
But isn't it more fun this way?

1:27
Any Dozier talk?
Stephen J. Nesbitt
1:27
About 200 comments ago, yeah.
Sean Gentille
1:27
Remember Lastings Milledge?
Creme Brule
1:28
Do you think the Pirates should sign Dickerson long-term if he is interested? I understand we have Meadows but Corey is a proven player already and Austin had cooled down a lot. I think having Dickerson on our team for the forseeable future is key to us getting back to the playoffs. You agree Stephen?
Stephen J. Nesbitt
1:29
It depends on how much it'll cost, but, yeah, there's something enticing about locking up a left fielder for a handful of years. The man hits. But how much of your self-inflicted low payroll do you want to push in that direction?
Dave

and Stammen
Sean Gentille
1:29
Someday, the Pirates will actually acquire Craig Stammen.
Fun question -- can you ever remember a more random player continually linked to a team in trade rumors WITHOUT actually winding up there?
Bill
1:29
Any chance Colin Moran would have any trade value in an Archer/controllable SP trade? I'd be fine going with Freese as the every day 3B then hopefully spell him with Kang if he can get back to playing time.
Sean Gentille
1:30
Like, I remember the Penguins getting linked to Dainus Zubrus for years, but he was a better player than Craig Stammen.
Stephen J. Nesbitt
1:30
The Pirates have specifically said David Freese won't be an everyday player — he's past that part of his career, and what he's doing now is working. And Jung Ho Kang is not an option right now. Going two months counting on Kang and Freese day in and day out sounds like a disastrous plan.

Do you remember for the entire 2000s that the Pirates were always *so close* to trading for Jeff Francis?
Sean Gentille
1:30
YES!
Greg
1:31
Do you think the Pirates are too focused on Archer right now? Would they make a deal for someone else if it’s getting close to deadline time and they still don’t know who landed Archer
Stephen J. Nesbitt
1:31
No, I think we're too focused on Archer right now.
Ethan
1:32
Do you think Gausman could be a repeat of Arrieta if traded?
Sean Gentille
1:32
Jung Ho Kang is currently on the DL with a .572 OPS in 34 AAA at-bats. Just FYI.
Stephen J. Nesbitt
1:32
He's a different sort of pitcher. Probably not smart to expect it to happen with every pitcher who is traded by the O's.
Tom
1:33
Is it reasonable to ask for a percentage chance that Pirates land Archer at this point? Or is it really a complete toss-up?
Sean Gentille
1:33
I don't think either of us is comfortable or capable of putting an accurate percentage on it.
Stephen J. Nesbitt
1:33
Developing story: I'm looking to acquire lunch.
