Why don’t low payroll teams capitalize on the salary suppression/correction by spending like $25m to put together a roster of hungry vets? For that much you could work Todd Frazier, Adam Jones, Brian Dozier, Tyler Clippard, Gio González, and Edwin Encarnacion.
Mark P

Basically, the 2013 Red Sox strategy (or the 2019 Twins strategy, to some extent).  A bunch of short-term deals makes sense, if you can pull it off and you hit on enough of the players

Do you see Dipoto selling Narvaez to the highest bidder, out do you think he'll try and unload Seager's contract a la Diaz/ Cano deal a year ago?
Mark P
5:37
I'm not sure Narvaez has as much value as Diaz did last winter, and while Seager's contract isn't as large as Cano's, Seager's deal has a clause that adds another year (at I think $15MM) in the event of a trade.

It isn't out of the question, and frankly it's the kind of creative trade packaging Dipoto often explores.  But those types of deals at someone difficult to pull off, since you'd then need to find a trade partner who needs both a catcher and a 3B

5:38
Do I look into Greg Bird to share some time at first base with Ryan Braun?
Mark P
5:38
(Stearns = Brewers GM)

Bird would be an intriguing pickup for Milwaukee, and maybe a steal if he could stay healthy
Albert Pujols

Do I Lose My Starting Role In 2020?
Mark P
5:39
Barring an unexpected rebound year, yes.
Erik Neander
5:39
Is there any chance the Rays would trade Charlie Morton? On the surface it sounds crazy, since they're a contending team and Morton is fantastic -- but it would be very Rays-like to sell-high on a player like him, knowing that they would get minimal return if he hits free agency a year from now.
Mark P
5:41
(Neander = Rays GM)

In fact, they'd likely get no return a year from now, as Morton has heavily hinted that he's retiring after 2020.  So you're right, it might make some sense for Tampa, but keep in mind that Morton is both good and durable --- no small feat for a Rays team has been ravaged by pitching injuries.  There's a lot of value in having at least one stable SP to count on amidst the sea of openers

What Are the Cubs Chances of Making the MLB Postseason in 2020 Mark Polishuk?
Mark P
5:42
Sure, they definitely have a chance, there's plenty of talent on that roster.  But they also certainly need some upgrades
Mr.Bateman
5:43
Should MLB put an annual salary limit for free agents if they sign on January or Feb to prevent the off season free agency to become stagnant due to the "waiting game" of the big name free agents?
Mark P
5:44
First of all, the players' union would 100 percent oppose this.  Second of all, in terms of pure news, baseball actually has the most active overall offseason.  In the NFL, NBA or NHL, most of the big signings happen on literally the first day of free agency, and then it's a couple months' of nothing
Justin
5:45
Jesus Aguilar DFA a surprise?
Mark P
5:45
Not especially.  The Rays constantly churn their roster, and Aguilar's stock has really fallen off within less than a year's time

I know hindsight is 20/20, but dont you think Dorn shouldve held on to Parkman?
Mark P
5:47
I would personally love to see a scenario where a team is sold to an active player, who then sells the team back to the old owner mid-season and returns to the field.  Why can't the real major leagues be more like Major League?
The Hand of the King
5:47
David Fletcher for Willson Contreras. Who says no, and why?
Mark P
5:47
Cubs say no, they would want a lot more for Contreras
Andrew
5:49
Greg Bird the perfect fit at 1B for Blue Jays?
Rocco Rox
5:49
Rox should sign Greg Bird. Hometown boy
Mark P
5:50
To save time, Greg Bird should get looks from every team with a first base vacancy.  There's nothing to lose in at least checking out a player who seemed to have big potential not long ago
Andrew
5:50
What do the Reds do about Joey Votto? It seems he is spared from criticism but his decline has been atrocious.
Mark P
5:51
Not much can be done, since obviously nobody is lining up to trade for that contract.  Votto's power has badly dropped off in the last two years, and even more troublingly, his average and OBP dropped off in 2019 as well

I’m sitting at a poolside bar in the Dominican Republic reading this chat. Is this the best way to spend thanksgiving?
Mark P
5:52
That's high on the list
Dodgerdog
5:52
I’ve never had a question appear. What will the Dodgers do? Sign a big contract or trade?
Mark P
5:53
Today is your lucky day!  A trade seems more likely based on Friedman's past tactics, though there isn't any reason the Dodgers couldn't spend (and spend big) on a top free agent)
Astros
5:54
What can we expect from the sign stealing?  Some have mentioned lifetime bans for front office staff, managers and even players involved.  What are your thoughts?
Mark P
5:56
I highly doubt players will be suspended, since how would the league determine who benefited the most?  Would they suspend everyone who played for the Astros from 2017-19?

As for front office personnel or AJ Hinch.....a year's suspension doesn't seem to be out of the question.  A lifetime ban would be so earthshaking that I wonder if the league would do it, though they're obviously looking to send a message with this punishment

5:57
Should I resign Donaldson? trade for Bryant from CHC? or get Andujar from NYY and sign cole or trade for Sale?
Mark P
5:59
AA = Braves GM Alex Anthopoulos

1. Sure, Donaldson and the Braves still seem like a strong fit
2. Less likely, since there's still uncertainty whether Bryant is controlled for one or two remaining years, and i'm not sure if the Cubs have interest in strengthening an already-dangerous NL rival
3. If I'm an NL team with a set first baseman and no DH spot to offer, I don't have a ton of interest in Miguel Andujar
4. Gerrit Cole seems out of Atlanta's price range.  Cole Hamels, however, does not.
5. Given Sale's injury concerns, I feel teams would look elsewhere

5:59
The Stroman deal is making more sense than at the time it occurred.   Stroman is due 11 million this year, probably not 11 million that the Jays wanted to invest in . . . . is there anyone else that the Jays will want to invest that 11 million too for pitching?
Mark P
5:59
They've already spent $8.5MM on Chase Anderson
Mark Polishuk’s mind
6:00
I don’t like the (team name here), therefore I don’t take questions regarding them.
Mark P
6:01
I am happy to answer questions about any team.  In fact, I think I've discussed almost every team in at least one question in this chat alone
Matt
6:01
Do you see it being hard for the Astros to lure name brand players from the FA pool viewing their scandal cloud around them?
Mark P
6:01
It'll definitely be a factor.  I don't see any big FAs signing with Houston until there's clarity about what suspensions and punishment is forthcoming

Am I headed to St Louis?
