MLBTR Chat with Steve Adams 3-1-16

Steve Adams
4:13
Fielder played in Detroit for two seasons.
4:14
Upton's 100% going to opt out of that contract anyway as long as he stays healthy and plays reasonably well. I know he commented about how he wanted to stay there long term, but that seems like just saying the right things to the media... I think the opt-out is a given if he remains productive.

4:15
Top picks to sign Bryce Harper after 2018. Nats? Yankees? Dodgers?
Steve Adams
4:16
Yeah -- I mean you have to just give the edge to the highest-spending clubs. Throw the Red Sox in too, I suppose. Maybe the Phillies. I'm hoping that a few clubs that would never normally spend at his level just decide it's a once-in-a-generation opportunity and make a crazy push for him, just because it'd be fun.
Scott Boras probably hopes the same, ha.
Aroldis
4:17
Do I pick up service time for the 30 days I'm suspended?
Steve Adams
4:17
Nope.
David Freese
4:17
Am I going to be on a roster opening day?
Steve Adams
4:19
I can't imagine we get through Spring Training without someone throwing a few million at Freese. Whatever he ends up signing for is almost certainly going to be a good deal for the club at this point. I know the Brewers want to go young and full rebuild and all that, but Freese would make a nice pickup and eventual trade chip. I can't imagine they're really thinking they're going to get solid production out of Middlebrooks or Cecchini.

4:19
Thoughts on Desmond signing with the Rangers?
Steve Adams
4:20
For $8MM, Desmond was a good add for any club. I'd like it better if they could find a way to get him into the infield somewhere, but it's still a really nice pickup even if he ultimately spends the year in left field.
Terry Ryan
4:20
Should I make an offer on AJAX?
Steve Adams
4:22
I kind of liked the idea of Jackson for the Twins earlier in the offseason, but that was before they decided to shift Sano to right field and keep Plouffe. They're deep in outfielders with Rosario, Buxton, Sano, Kepler and Arcia... I don't think Ryan's going to block any of them with Jackson unless Buxton has some form of catastrophic injury in spring training.
Indian
4:22
Is Corey Kluber underrated?
Steve Adams
4:22
He won the Cy Young Award in 2014. I don't think too many people question how great he is.
John
4:23
Interesting on Chapman. So is he at risk of not becoming FA after 2016? Baseball ref has him at 5.034 on opening day
Steve Adams
4:23
46 days would've prevented Chapman from missing free agency. He was at risk, but this suspension won't do it.
4:24
I already discussed the Perez extension earlier in the chat, to those asking for my take on it.
Aaron
4:24
Scott Feldman or Doug Fister? Who makes opening day roster? What happens to the other?
Steve Adams
4:25
They'll both be on the roster, one will probably just be in the bullpen. My guess is Feldman on that front.
Rob R
4:25
Suffering from poll deficiency here: what player still available in FA is most surprising? Austin Jackson, David Freese, Justin Morneau, any others I'm still missing? Matt Thornton?
Steve Adams
4:25
Sure we can run with that
4:26
Most surprising name remaining on the free agent market?

Justin Morneau (16.2% | 58 votes)

David Freese (38.2% | 137 votes)

Austin Jackson (28.7% | 103 votes)

Pedro Alvarez (12% | 43 votes)

Matt Thornton (5% | 18 votes)

Total Votes: 359

Why don't the reds trade Votto and Bruce already and Rebuild.
Steve Adams
4:27
They've clearly been trying to trade Bruce, but his stock isn't exactly at a high point. As for Votto, he has a full no-trade clause, so it's not that simple.
4:28
Fewer than 10 percent of the chat attendees are voting -- strange. I voted for Jackson, for what it's worth.
Sandy
4:28
Would Reuben Tejada help the Padres?
Steve Adams
4:29
He's a reasonable backup infielder for them or any other club -- I don't know that he'd make a huge difference in San Diego, though.
Michael
4:30
Who takes over at catcher the day Yadier Molina retires?
Steve Adams
4:30
Zero way of knowing that now. The answer might be someone that hasn't even been drafted yet.
Michael
4:31
Team that should have signed an impact free agent that did not?
Steve Adams
4:32
Would've loved to see the Angels get a second baseman, Yankees add a starting pitcher, Indians add an outfielder... Jeff and I talked about this on the Podcast a couple weeks ago after his interview with Joe Panik: http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2016/02/mlbtr-podcast-giants-second-baseman-joe-panik.html
Alex
4:32
I vote Marlon Byrd. Any thoughts on him playing for the O's?
Steve Adams
4:34
Yeah should've included an "other" section, I suppose. I don't love the idea. They'd need some kind of platoon mate for him, as he doesn't really hit right-handed pitching well at all in 2015, and he's not going to bring much in the way of defensive value either.
Ben
4:35
Kepler trade or a short stop. Escobar isn't a long term fit
Steve Adams
4:35
Twins love Escobar. He'll get the chance to run with the job, at least for 2016, with Polanco and Santana serving as backups. I doubt they're anxious to trade Kepler; he could easily be their everyday RF if and when Sano moves back to third base.
Joshua
4:37
If Lucroy proves he is healthy during spring ball, do you think that heats up his market prior to Opening Day at all?
Steve Adams
4:38
He can probably build up a bit of value in spring, but the thing that's going to generate more interest from other clubs will be when he's handling a full workload behind the plate, catching nine innings several days in a row, and that's not going to happen in Spring Training most likely, just because Milwaukee will be getting looks at other guys behind the dish and easing Lucroy back into full workloads.
Brandon
4:39
Can you think of a team managing an injury worse than what the Reds did with Mesoraco last year?
Steve Adams
4:39
Not really. That was one of the most bizarre situations I can recall seeing. I'm sure I'm forgetting someone, but that was a mess.
