(Not sure if questions sent ~2 hours before the chat are just lost and buried forever so I apologize for resending) - Any chance the MLBPA files grievances on behalf of players like Nate Pearson for whom teams are very openly saying will not start for the first week just to get that extra year of control? I know they don't under normal circumstances, but a 6-game cutoff is laughably short, especially for a starting pitcher

So the earlier questions are available for me to answer, just fyi, and I am plucking from them.
Good question here.

I think the Kris Bryant grievance case is so utterly conclusive on the matter that there's basically no way to make a winning grievance unless an exec says something dumb or some internal leak springs.

If you're Farhan Zaidi, who do you expect to be your most valuable trade chip at the deadline and what do you think you can reasonably get in return?
Jeffrey Todd
1:15
ummm ... a resurgent Cueto?
1:16
It's a funky roster, no doubt. Nobody really jumps. Obviously you have some other veteran starters with just one year to go as well -- Shark, Gausman, Smyly -- so they'd also be options. And Tony Watson has been solid and is pretty cheap.

I'm a lifelong Drew Smyly believer so give him my vote, but I don't think he'll command much in a trade.

Bobby Grich should be in the Hall of Fame?
Jeffrey Todd
1:16
I'm down with that for sure.
Steve Adams

You're looking 30ish games for a rental pitcher and maybe a crapshoot expanded postseason
(Well, more of a crapshoot than usual)
Also yes to Grich

Who do you see signing the next megadeal?  And do you see Lindor being traded this season?
Jeffrey Todd
1:17
I see pretty good odds of a big contract for Javy Baez. Not sure it'll constitute a true megadeal.
Steve Adams
1:18
Yeah, if we're talking 300+, Baez isn't getting that -- at least not in my view. Lindor, though.
Jeffrey Todd
1:18
Lindor mid-season trade is definitely possible if the Indians really fall out. But if half of the teams make the postseason ...
I do think guys like him with at least some future control will be more appealing trade targets even than usual.

If you had to guess, what happened to JA Happ in 2021?
Steve Adams
1:19
(Meaning Lindor could sign 300+ ... midseason trade will be totally context dependent on a small sample. Could be wild.
Jeffrey Todd

4.27 ERA

There is a small part of me whispering that if this gets shut down and it bleeds into next year it might be the best thing for motivated labor talks. Grasping at straws for our sport avoiding an irredeemable fiasco after '21...what do you think?
Jeffrey Todd
1:19
I think making some money would be better for labor peace. And perhaps even building some trust if they can pull this off?
1:20
The fact they are talking postseason expansion now seems promising, since that's a total add-on.

Juan Soto tested positive for Covid-19 and will miss the beginning of the season, per Jeff Passan
Jeffrey Todd

oh no
1:21
Really weird timing since he was already sidelined due to The Protocols.
Just wild.

What do you think the odds are the Yankees stay (mostly) healthy and hoist #28 at the end of the season?
Jeffrey Todd
1:22
Given the Astros pitching issues, I'll lean NYY as the AL favorite right now.

Please remind me will we have replay reviews this year.

Far as I know.

Mariners started out 13-2 last year, which equates to 35-6.  Not that it will happen again, but do you see them possibly making the playoffs if they're expanded?
Jeffrey Todd
1:23
You have to squint really hard to see a path, even in 60. It is probably more like a 4% possibility than a 0.2% possibility?
Which is a lot better!

In a perfect world, how much of a return can the Giants hope for with some of our arms, like Shark, Gausman, Smyly, given the shortened season? I’m afraid teams will be hoarding their prospects and even if they all get off to good starts, the return will be next to nothing.
Jeffrey Todd
1:23
It's hard to imagine it'd be much, especially since traded players have to be added to the 60-man pool. That complicates things, though I don't see why they can't still just route guys through the pool.

Do I live in a world with hope, with joy, with the redemptive power of Andrelton Simmons coming back to the Braves at the deadline?
Jeffrey Todd

Extremely unlikely in my view. The Angels have to do everything possible to get into the postseason this year if it's expanded.
