Will/would expanded playoffs absolutely murder the trade deadline?
Jeffrey Todd
1:25
Yes, but teams that are sellers could REALLY sell. Would be a very different dynamic.
Kirt Bennett

Have you heard anything about fans being allowed in to watch?   Thank you and I enjoy the chats very much.
Jeffrey Todd
1:26
That is going to be on a case-by-case basis, depending upon what each city/state permit. I haven't heard of any specific plans to put butts in seats in the immediate term. I'm sure there's also a leaguewide fear of pushing too hard to start ... focus has to be on getting the basic season up and running.

From what I read, there is a major and seldom ignored reason that Buffalo won't work. The clubhouses are so small that a the required social distancing MLB wants is impossible. Agree or not?
Jeffrey Todd
1:27
I think they could adapt ... after all, the plan in Camden Yards involves setting up makeshift facilities on the freakin' concourse!

Should we feel comfortable that Trout will play thru the season? Obviously he will miss 4-5 games but should that be all?
Steve Adams
1:28
He said in yesterday's comments that his main concern was a major outbreak within the game, and that hasn't happened yet.
Jeffrey Todd
1:28
It is theoretically possible he or some other star could decide to opt out if it doesn't feel safe or whatever. But you'd have to think most of these guys would rather make a go/no go decision up front.

I watched the Cubs/Twins exhibition game last night. First game I've watched. Great to see baseball again, but while the piped in ambient noise was fine, I thought the "cheering" after HRs and Ks was ridiculously bad. Am I alone in this?
Steve Adams
1:28
He sounded pretty intent on playing, so I would imagine that barring a huge surge in cases throughout the league -- or one with the Angels in particular -- he's going to play.
Jeffrey Todd
1:28
I'm with you. I think some experimentation is fine, on the one hand, but it's pretty easy to get too weird!
Steve Adams
1:29
I do not like.
I'd rather it be quiet and hear the players shout ridiculous things more clearly, ha.
Jeffrey Todd
1:29
Yeah agree, being able to view a MLB game like it's a high school contest would be pretty cool.
1:30
I am generally annoyed by piped-in sound effects beyond a traditional organ/PA anyway.

If a team makes the postseason with a losing record, the playoffs have too many teams.
Jeffrey Todd
1:30
Yeah I don't love giving spots to more than half the league.
JJimbo

I agree!  Let's hear the players chat!  That would be ole town baseball!

Do you think the Jays will be players for Lindor next offseason?  Or another big dollar SS? Push Bichette to 3b or 2b?  There is still some questions about Bichette as a long term SS.
Kirt Bennett
1:33
Say it with me,  NO PIPED IN NOISE!!  NO PIPED IN NOISE!!
Jeffrey Todd
1:33
Re Lindor, I don't know that I love the fit when you stop and think about what kind of young talent it'll take ... and what kind of contract will be needed to keep him long term. They have so much young talent filtering up in the infield.
Jays make sense otherwise, but you'd rather it be a starter or outfielder I think.

Any word on whether the expanded playoffs would be 2 teams per division + 2 wild cards per league, or 1 team per division with next 5 best teams?
Jeffrey Todd
1:36
Unless I'm mistaken, the proposal involved 3 division winners and then just extra wild cards based upon record. To me that makes the most sense, b/c the whole "win the division" concept begins to lose meaning past being the top team.
Joshua
1:36
And what would be your preference?
Jeffrey Todd
1:37
Well my preference would be not to have this arrangement at all, if I'm being honest. I liked the preexisting number of postseason teams just fine. Or I'd like to see a longer, more meaningful tournament.
But it is a weird year, so you have to roll with it. In that case, I think division winners plus next X teams by record makes the most sense.

I know it is far out yet, but any work on MLB setting up fall leagues to get prospects some playing time?  Need to plan a vacation somewhere.
Jeffrey Todd
1:38
I'd assume that anything they're able to pull off will be fan-free. The purpose would be developmental and there'll be a big concern with tripping up and having to shut things down.
There definitely seems to be a lot of support for that sort of concept but I'm not sure where it stands.
1:39
Ultimately, if they nail down logistics for the season, they will probably try to do something for prospects.

Any news on Christian Walker's availability for Opening Day?  Does the DH help insulate him against lost playing time to Kevin Cron and/or Seth Beer?
Steve Adams
1:39
Popping back in to say that Nats GM Mike Rizzo says Soto is asymptomatic, which is good to hear, but he'll still be out until he twice tests negative. That's a brutal early blow for Nats
Jeffrey Todd
1:40
Nothing new I've seen on Walker. But generally I think the D-Backs will be looking at a lot of mixing and matching in the 1B/DH slots. Trying to get the right matchups and take advantage of the big roster.
SteveM
1:40
The Toronto Blue Jays should play in a place like Nashville, Portland, Charlotte, that want franchises in the future. While Salt Lake City is not in the equation they have a beautiful MLB ready field.
Steve Adams
1:40
Walker was on the OD roster. I think first base is his to lose. Neither Cron nor Beer has proven anything, and neither is close to the defender he is.
Jeffrey Todd
1:41
So Steve has Walker penciled in for everyday ABs.
We shall see!
