SteveM, the trouble is with facility quality. They want MLB fields and lights, first and foremost. And then going down the line on getting governmental agreement means having political capital. Probably more in the cities they already have MLB teams, though perhaps that added carrot of a possible future expansion would help.

Just curious, how many of us do you see attending the chat at the moment?
Jeffrey Todd
1:43
Pretty small numbers thus far ... hard to say with people coming and going but we've probably had about 30 folks. Still new in the sub process as well, of course.
That also means your question will get answered! Lay it on me!

I read that the percentage of positive tests for COVID-19 has been less than 1 percent. Is that correct?
Jeffrey Todd
1:44
I think that's about right, yeah. Generally has been promising and MLB has gotten love from its early critics for the process. On the other hand, we still have stuff like a sudden positive test for a major star. There's obviously a pretty significant commitment to the season now but there's still serious uncertainty.

So the Jays announced Pearson is being called up on Jun 29th.... right after they gain an extra year of service time.  Isn’t it odd to kind of pre-announce a call up like this?
Steve Adams
1:45
They didn't announce that. It was reported by someone citing anonymous sources. Huge difference.
(Unless I missed something)
Jeffrey Todd
1:46
Also I think in this case they have a pretty clear rejoinder: "we want to use the roster spot when it's needed most, as reflected by the agreed-upon roster expansion. We need a full supply of fresh arms to ensure we can protect the health of our pitchers."
Scared free agent to be
1:46
Who do you predict will sign extensions during the season prior to reaching Free Agency? Who do you see as sure bets to be traded?
Steve Adams
1:46
Those sources are likely within the Jays org, sure, but they're not publicly putting their stamp on anything that I've seen. Doing so would open them wide up to a grievance.
Jeffrey Todd
1:47
Tough question!
Impressed
1:47
Steve Adams is answering questions and posting updates to MLBTR on Soto's status. Impressive multi-tasking...
Steve Adams
1:47
Also back-filling posts on Pat Valaika and Terrance Gore!
I'm giving you my all, guys.

This is what we do! Always processing info ... you should see the trade deadline craziness.
Steve Adams
1:47
Matthew Boyd stands out as #1, to me, for likeliest trade option
Jeffrey Todd
1:47
Okay let me re-pose this question ... Who do you predict will sign extensions during the season prior to reaching Free Agency? Who do you see as sure bets to be traded?
Steve Adams
1:47
Unless you're talking pure rentals
Jeffrey Todd
1:48
Steve has Boyd atop the trade list, okay, okay. I can see that.
We have had him atop trade lists for like 3 years now but you never know when it'll finally happen.
Pure rental: Ken Giles.
Steve Adams
1:48
If we're saying pure rentals, give me Kendall Graveman and Taijuan Walker for trade candidates. Ken Giles too
Distanced high five to Jeff on the simul-Giles listing, ha
1:49
Extension-wise, the Phillies really want to keep JTR. I'd have said maybe Mets/Stroman, but not with the calf injury
Jeffrey Todd
1:49
In terms of the pending FAs that might want extensions ... harder to foresee.
Mookie shows that the door is open.
Steve Adams
1:49
Side note: This year's crop of free agents is going to be brutal if JTR signs.
Signs an extension, that is.

Could this be the window for the A's to lock up Semien? Or are the penny pinching A's going to be even more risk-averse?
Steve Adams
1:50
They just had to be shamed into paying their minor leaguers $400/wk -- I'm going with the latter.
Jeffrey Todd
1:50
How about Mike Minor?
Deadline deals
1:51
Any chance a team like the Padres/White Sox/Rangers are simultaneous buyers & sellers at the deadline? Moving Free Agents to be and trying to add controllable players for future years?
Jeffrey Todd
1:52
I think there could be some unusual arrangements because of the weird competitive landscape AND the fact that some teams will be very motivated to shave off salary obligations.
Steve Adams
1:52
Teams do that every year at this point. The pure sellers/buyers dichotomy is kind of a thing of the past. Sure, some tanking clubs are always going to sell, and some division leaders are going to be pure buyers, but it's usually a blend.
1:53
The teams you listed strike me as perfectly plausible examples of clubs that could do that, though, sure.
Jeffrey Todd
1:53
Yeah I think teams are looking at it more as a slate of investments/bets. With finite resources to place them. And they're always tinkering and shifting. It's not an in or out situation, really.
1:54
Look at the Mets and Reds acquiring two of the best-available starters last year (Stroman, Bauer).
