And, looking up the numbers now, deGrom was actually pretty sharp in his one postseason (2.88 ERA in 25 innings in 2015).

Given the injury situation with Thomas Hatch and Nate Pearson, do you think the Blue Jays regret not paying the asking price for one of the decent SP that were available?
Mark P
9:36
As a Jays fan, I would've felt a lot less nervous about the upcoming season with another solid veteran arm in the rotation.

Who will be the MLB 2021 #1 pick overall?
Mark P
9:37
Seems like it'd be a stunner if it's anyone besides Rocker, Lawlar, or Leiter.  But, it is still a long time until July

above or below .500? I think we are sneaky competitive
Mark P
9:38
I'm going to assume you mean the Red Sox, since it would be a real eye-opener if the White Sox are under .500
Will the Red Sox finish over .500?

Yes (27.6% | 119 votes)

No (63.1% | 272 votes)

Exactly a .500 record (9.3% | 40 votes)

Give me five bees for a quarter, they'd say.  Now where were we.....the important thing was I had a onion on my belt, which was the style at the time

I find it interesting that the Mets HAVE to sign Lindor, Conforto, Syndergard, and Stroman.   Aren't they close to the Tax threshold already this year, and those are some Big contracts.   What are you thoughts, in order, on who they sign?
Mark P
9:41
"Have to"?  Stroman and Thor are big wait-and-sees, in my view.

Gallo extension: foolish or brilliant?
Mark P
9:44
Depends on the money involved, naturally.  Small sample size aside, Gallo's 2020 numbers were just enough of a concern that if I'm the Rangers, I want to see him rebound this year before considering a long-term deal
Scott Harris
9:45
Most interesting free agent that fits our needs now that money is off the books?( after the season )
Mark P
9:47
(Scott Harris = Giants GM)

I'd say one of the shortstops as a replacement for Brandon Crawford, but the Giants do have Marco Luciano looming in a few years.  If the Giants get an inkling to move Luciano to 3B as Longoria's eventual replacement, that could be an option (or prep Luciano for both positions, or maybe move your big signing SS to third base in a few years)

Why do teams sign free agents to these long-term contracts when they know darn well that year five, six or seven are going to see them stuck with a player well past his prime, but costing them lots of money.
Mark P
9:49
Because if the player helps them win a World Series in years 1,2,3, or 4 (or even 5-7), then the deal is judged successful, all things considered.

Over/under 30 Hrs for Vlad
Mark P

I'd take the over.  People forget that 2021 will still be Vlad's first full MLB season.

Can the mets lowball stroman on an extension right now and get him to agree. or buy out a free agent year on syndegaard would make me feel better about the future of the rotation
Mark P
9:54
Based on everything Stroman has ever said publicly, I highly doubt he'd ever sell low on himself for any contract.

As for Thor, just because he's coming off such a notable injury, maybe he'd have some interest in a one-year deal but I still doubt it.
Buffalo Bisons
9:56
If the Jays have to play at Sahlen Field again later this year, where do we play?
Mark P
9:58
Good question.  If I'm not mistaken, I think I read somewhere that the Bisons and another local-ish team (the Nats' Triple-A team in Rochester?) had schedules that didn't intersect, so conceivably one team could always be in Rochester while the other was on the road.
9:59
So I wonder if some kind of arrangement has been worked out between the Jays and Nats (or whatever team/city is involved).
Verlander
10:01
Would a team trade for me now so they can give me a QO at end of year? Would help Houston stay under the tax too.
Mark P
10:01
Verlander has full no-trade protection, and I'm not sure why he'd waive it to allow such a move.

Brewers...88 win season?
Mark P

I think that's doable.  I'm quietly impressed with what Milwaukee did this offseason.

Do I extend Max?
Mark P
10:07
(Mike Rizzo = Nats GM)

I think there's a decent chance of a new deal, given the history between Scott Boras (Scherzer's agent) and the Lerners.  Two-year deal, mayyyyyybe even a third?

Kieboom is having rough spring. Any chance he starts season in minors? Who would play 3B to start season?
Mark P
10:09
I guess the play there would be to put Harrison at 3B, or perhaps get Castro over there (and Luis Garcia at 2B), or have Garcia at third and keep Castro mostly at second.  Or just toggle Harrison, Castro, and Garcia between all three positions.

Given that Cash didn’t even trust Snell the third time through, do ANY of the Rays current pitchers ever go 7 inn. or more? Does Cash outmanage himself, given the propensity to go “by the computer”?
Mark P
10:12
That's an organizational philosophy, it isn't all on Cash

And I still say that removing Snell would have been defensible if they hadn't brought in Nick Anderson.  If the regular-season lights out Anderson had been coming in, sure, but Anderson had been running on fumes for most of the playoffs.  You have to turn to a hotter arm at that point.

What would be a successful season for the Pirates? 65 wins and promising seasons from 3 of Hayes, Newman, Reynolds and Keller?
Mark P
10:13
I think Bucs management would happily take that.  Lots of progress from the young building blocks and still another high draft pick for the rebuild.
Angel RF
10:14
Angel just give spot to Fowler I do not understand. St Louis could not get rid of him fast enough basically paying his salary. If he was a free agent this off season would only have a minor league deal. Do you think made a mistake by doing this?
Mark P
10:16
It's really Fowler starting, but with the expectation that Adell and/or Marsh will be joining the fray at some point in 2021.

Considering that the Angels are only paying a fraction of Fowler's salary, I guess why not try him out there?  It seemed like Fowler really needed a change of scenery from St. Louis, so maybe he'll be reinvigorated playing for Joe Maddon again.

Interesting to see how Jonathan India's prospect ranking had dropped across the board during 2020 despite glowing reviews on his development, and now he's crushing it. How much do you think most prospect rankings will be off due to the cancelled minor league season?
