Manaea or Bassitt, take your pick.  They're both only under contract through 2022, whereas Chapman and Olson are arb-controlled through 2023
Jarrod

With Marlins and Rays lining up on trades, do you see a bigger one surrounding a CF and a SP?
Mark P
9:12
Kiermaier would be a good answer to Miami's CF needs, though he doesn't bring the hitting pop that the Marlins are looking for.  That doesn't preclude Kiermaier being part of a trade along with another bat, of course.

Will Robbie Ray accept the QO or does he want to go somewhere else?
Mark P
9:12
Zero chance Ray takes the QO

9:13
Hi Mark, just wanted to know if certain top FAs are against signing with AL East clubs(NYY/Bos/Tor) and would be reluctant to sign/move to east ?
Mark P
9:13
I'm sure there are plenty of players who have geographic preferences, or simply don't want to play for certain teams.  It's just that these usually aren't publicized, since if you're a top free agent, you want the appearance of as large a market as possible.
9:14
It is also likely that if you're a free agent pitcher, you might not want to go to the AL East and face all those tough lineups on a regular basis

9:14
Giants most likely to re-sign, in order from most to least, 1) Gausman, 2) Belt, 3) DeScalfani, 4) A. Wood
Mark P
9:15
I'd put Belt first just because I think he's a decent candidate to just take the QO.  But Gausman seems the likeliest of the pitchers to return

9:15
How solid in your opinion was the Brosseau trade for the Brew crew?
Mark P
9:16
Very solid.  Brosseau is a useful and versatile player, and he was hitting well in 2019-20.
Will
9:16
Will the Yankees package Britton with a prospect to a rebuilding team to free up $14 million?
Mark P
9:17
Given what we knew about the Yankees' luxury tax crunch, I was pretty surprised they kept Britton last winter given his high salary.  A trade might be possible now, but that would have to be a good prospect for another team to eat that entire salary
Braves
9:19
Why do deals take days to come together? Freddie turned down an offer by the Braves. Why not just sit down and figure it out instead of taking days upon days of back and forth?
Mark P
9:21
I've never personally negotiated a multi-million dollar contract* but I can imagine they're pretty complicated to fully work out.  Even once the major details are agreed upon, there are still a lot of i's to dot and t's to cross.

asterisk = my agent negotiated my last deal with MLBTR.  A lot of years, and a lot of zeroes!

Yankees and Brewers are obvious candidates for Olson. Do you have a dark horse team or teams for Oly?
Mark P
9:23
Guardians, Padres if they can unload Hosmer, Rays, Marlins, Mariners
9:24
Even some teams who have a good 1B in place might be inclined to make a move if Olson can be had at the right price
Distraught Reds Fan

First, I need reassured, Joey Votto isn’t going anywhere right? I saw him mentioned as a trade candidate in a CBS Sports article. Second, am I right that the young talent and farm system for the Reds this time around gives us more reason to be optimistic about their chances than the last go around with a “rebuild”, “reboot”, whatever you want to call it?
Mark P
9:26
Votto has a no-trade clause, and he has been adamant about remaining in Cincinnati for his entire career.  It's possible he might change his mind if the team is going rebuild and not compete, but I'd bet on Votto staying put
Yankees
9:27
Do you think the Yankees would ever look at bringing Tanaka back?
Mark P
9:27
I think he is their dark horse pitching addition of the winter
Rally Monkey
9:28
Would Elvis Andrus make more sense for the Halos instead of dropping big money on a free agent ss?
Mark P
9:29
Andrus isn't much/any of an upgrade at shortstop, however.

9:30
Do you not like the White Sox? Your answers to White Sox related questions always seem so pessimistic.
Mark P
9:31
I have no problem at all with the White Sox, I just suspect that we might have already seen their big spending splurge and now they're going to try and tinker when they should be going full-steam ahead.

Why would Dipoto publicly state he’s not interested in any free agent shortstops and that he’s perfectly comfortable with JP?
Mark P
9:33
Technically, he just said that Crawford will remain the shortstop --- if any of the other shortstops wanted to move positions, that would presumably be cool.

With all respect to JP Crawford, I'm not sure why the Mariners are so dead set on keeping him as their shortstop, if it means closing the door on any of the "big five" guys this winter.  Moving Crawford to 2B, for instance, would help Seattle just as much.

When do qualifying offers have to be signed? Who hasn't rejected them yet?
Mark P
9:34
The 17th is the deadline for qualifying offer answers.  Here is our running list of players who have already turned down the QO: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2021/11/early-qualifying-offer-decision...

9:35
So with Verlander having a pretty good BP day, and the tigers in need of Starting pitching, what is the chance we see a Motown reunion?
Mark P
9:36
My guess is that Verlander will sign with a team more clearly set to contend in 2022, as fun as a reunion in Detroit would be

Saw a quote from Sandy Alderson that seemed to indicate that the Mets re in no hurry to solve their front office issues. Is there a strategy behind this or simply the Mets being the Mets?
Mark P
9:37
In fairness, what is Alderson going to say?  "Oh man, we've totally blown this, help us!  Who can we hire, who, WHO?!", all while panic-sweating like Nathan Thurm?
Jarryd
9:38
Marlins stockpile pitching. For a small market team, this seems like a great strategy as every team always needs pitching. Why haven't more teams done this?
Mark P
9:39
Every team "tries" to stockpile pitching, but it's incredibly hard to do.  Some teams (Marlins, Guardians, Rays) are much better at it than others

I like the sound of the Giants going after Semien AND Taylor like you suggested.  Since Semien wants to play in the West and is from the Bay Area, are the Giants at the top of his list?
Mark P
9:40
There have been rumblings that Semien would prefer to play for a team on the west coast, though it should be noted, not every player wants to play in their hometown.  Some prefer to keep some separation from their work and their regular life.

What went wrong with my team this year? We were perfectly lined up for the post season when everything fell apart. Now that a bunch of what made us a good team is going to the FA market, how do we prepare for next season
