Luis castillo for Oswald Peraza and Joey Gallo + cash for Gallo’s salary? Who says no?  Cincy gets a long term piece plus a chance to be remain competitive in 2021 while cutting salary. Cincy had success with gray who struggled in NYC
Mark P
8:24
The Reds would want more than this for Castillo, and would be able to find it elsewhere
Joshua
8:24
If the Nats decided to go forward with Victor Robles, what do you think they could flip Lane Thomas for? Thanks.
Mark P
8:24
I think there's a much better chance the Nats keep Thomas as a long-term option than Robles

How much will an off season without training input from the team's training staff effect players both those in physical rehab and those not?
Mark P
8:26
It'll certainly impact some players, but probably not as many as you think.  It's not like the lockout took anyone by surprise, so medical staffs had time to lay out a recovery/training plan with injured players prior to December 1 (Jameson Taillon made mention of this in a post today on MLBTR)

Do you think behind the scenes, teams are talking and agreeing to trades and we'll see an influx of transactions when the freeze is lifted?
Mark P
8:28
I have zero doubt there are some under-the-radar communiques happening between front offices and agents, even if the league is apparently closely monitoring such talk.

This might be like the first day of NFL/NBA/NHL free agency, when these huge multi-million dollar contracts are announced just moments after the free agent market "officially" opens

How high do you see the luxury tax going in the new CBA? Last I heard the owners were willing to do 220.
Mark P
8:32
Going to "only" $220MM should certainly be palatable for the owners, given that the tax threshold has only been inching up by an average of $3MM per year over the last five offseasons
Realistically, the tax threshold could be much higher than $220MM.

8:33
What are the chances I’m a Red in September?
Mark P
8:34
Better than 50 percent.  Cincy should still be a decently competitive team as presently constructed, and should remain close enough in the pennant race that they shouldn't need to be deadline sellers
Rizzo
8:35
Should I go 13 years $515 on Juan Soto? Just wrap up a hall of fame guy now, or is this a trap? I want an Alex Ovechkin kind of deal, but this is a commitment!
Mark P
8:36
Soto is the rare talent who could sign a deal of that size and (after the initial sticker shock) everyone would nod and think "yeah, sounds about right."

In the two previous great Phillies eras (50s and late 70s/early 80s) multiple players on the teams made the HoF. Do you think it will be only Roy Halladay from the more recent group in the hall or could any of Rollins, Utley, Howard, Hamels join him?
Mark P
8:39
I wouldn't put any of the Rollins/Utley/Howard/Hamels group in the HOF.  Excellent players all, but not HOFers in my book.

How would you feel if MLB would do a cap of 210 and a floor of 100 mil per year but also have a legacy clause, where if the player stays with one team more than 7 years his contract signed after his 7th year if with same team would not count against the cap
Mark P
8:40
Not crazy about the cap/floor scenario, but I do like the idea of a "David Beckham rule" for baseball, a la MLS and their Designated Players
8:41
Or the NBA and their Larry Bird exemptions
Mark P
8:41
Why is Ortiz getting a free pass on his PED speculations?
Mark P
8:42
Ortiz's PED ties stem from a report done pre-testing, and Rob Manfred is on record as saying that the report carries some false positives.  And, Ortiz then never failed a PED test once the league actually did institute testing.
8:43
It's not a "free pass" since obviously it's brought up a lot

8:43
The player/ex-player chats are great. Are you guys going to keep that going?
Mark P
8:43
That's the plan, we're trying to get more arranged for the coming days and weeks
Twins fan
8:45
Will Minnesota sign a starter? I don't see anyone currently an ace.
Mark P
8:46
A trade might be more likely for Minnesota to land a front-of-the-rotation type, in part because not many of those guys are still available in free agency
Maybe Kershaw (who isn't going to the Twins) and arguably Rodon
Farhan
8:48
what would it take to get Bassitt/Montas from across the bay? Gotta think Luciano/Ramos are off limits and Bart is starting next year…possible to make a big trade while holding onto that trio?
Mark P
8:49
Getting both Bassitt AND Montas is a tall order, but getting either one in a singular trade is certainly feasible for SF.  Now, it should be noted that the A's and Giants basically never trade with each other, but that notwithstanding, the Giants have the prospect depth to swing a deal for one of Oakland's pitchers without moving someone from the top three
Joshua
8:51
I understand you never WANT to trade one of the best players in the game, but hear me out.......The Nats as currently constructed are again a top 5 worst team in the league. They have Soto for 3 more years before FA, and this year looks like it's a waste of 1/3 of those years, meaning they really only have him for 2 possibly playoff contending seasons. IF, Mike Rizzo and Nats ownership do not believe they will be resigning Soto, why shouldn't they look to trade him this offseason? HIs value is obviously astronomical, and wouldn't a team like the Mariners be able to offer an absolute haul and be a solid trade for both teams. (I understand this is not going to happen, but honestly I don't see why it shouldn't).
Mark P
8:53
If the Nats already have knowledge that Soto isn't going to be signing an extension, then yes, I would agree that a trade isn't a crazy idea.  But Soto has publicly stated many times over that he wants to stay in Washington, and since the Nats have already shown they're willing to spend big bucks on players, a record-setting extension should be feasible on some level.

What does the Mets’ ownership see in me?
Mark P
8:56
A lengthy track record of turning around struggling franchises
Detroit Tigers
8:56
What would we need to give up in an effort to pry Rockies ace, German Marquez?
Mark P
8:57
The Rockies are on record as saying that Marquez is unavailable.  Could be some level of posturing involved in that statement, but even if so, the Tigers or any team would have to give up a ton to convince the Rox to make a move
Friedman
8:59
Should I reach out to reds or a's for starting pitching
Mark P
8:59
Why not both?
Kevin
9:00
Does Eddie Rosario make sense for the Cards?
Mark P
9:00
Sure, for the same reasons as Schwarber/Joc in the question from earlier in the chat.  Though I'd say that Schwarber has a much higher ceiling than Rosario or Joc
