Whereas if Chicago signed several guys to shorter-term deals, that creates more immediate pressure to win in 2022
Goose

Is Charlie Montoyo on a hot seat?
Mark P
8:17
Not that I know of.  If anything, the organization likes how he kept the team focused during two seasons when the Jays barely played in their actual ballpark
Chris
8:19
What team will Russell Wilson be on next year?
Mark P
8:20
Ooh, a non-baseball sports question!  Hot take: Carolina
Baseball Girl

Were you surprised that Stroman only got a 3 year deal? Seemed a little light to me. Thanks as always for hosting these chats.
Mark P
8:22
You're welcome!  It was a little surprising, especially with that opt-out available to Stroman after Year Two.  The contract might have also been a function of Stroman wanting to get his deal settled pre-lockout, so the opt-out was included to give him some flexibility.

Lorenzo Cain’s $18 million come off the books after this season. Do I spend that now on an OF or 1B?
Mark P
8:23
Actually, a lot of it will be going to cover Yelich's extension, but to your point, an OF makes more sense.  The Brewers probably feel 1B can be a relatively inexpensive position to fill, or they might be happy with Tellez and whatever Hiura might still provide
Jorge

Do you think the MLB will expand the playoff field?
Mark P
8:24
Yep, I think the playoff field will be at least 12 teams in 2022
Bloom
8:25
Who do I trade for or sign to take over Vazquez’s catching duties next season?
Mark P
8:25
Maybe nobody, since the Red Sox have a couple of interesting catching prospects in the pipeline.  If they're that keen on the youngsters, maybe they retain Plawecki as the veteran half of a timeshare
Joshua
8:26
Does Josh Bell make sense as a cheaper and solid trade candidate for any team that misses out on dealing for Olson or signing Freeman or Rizzo? Or should the Brewers just come calling? Thanks.
Mark P
8:27
He does, though moving Bell now would even more firmly point the Nationals towards the "rebuild" direction.  That isn't a step they seem entirely willing to take yet, despite all of their deadline moves and the number of holes and unanswered questions still on the roster
Bill Veeck
8:27
How motivated are the players and owners to get an agreement in place by the start of spring training?
Mark P
8:28
Both sides have openly talked about how a prolonged work stoppage would be awful for the sport, and I would imagine that after losing so much revenue during the pandemic, the league isn't eager to lose any more regular-season games.
8:29
So my hope is that sanity prevails on both sides
LGM

Mets management was unhappy with the thumbs-down antics of Lindor, Baez, Pillar and was a reason they didn't pursue Baez and will let Pillar go. Any chance they're also trying to move Lindor (within the constraints of his limited no-trade clause)? I don't see Lindor ever being popular with the fans or teammates (see: Jeff McNeil).
Mark P
8:30
Moving Lindor before his extension even begins seems almost impossible.  And, it would also send a bad message to other players the Mets are trying to lure to town.
Farhan
8:33
Solid starting four, no Bryant and no Posey. What’s next? Suzuki? Castellanos? Both seem like Farhan type players. Maybe Rodon for another SP?
Mark P
8:34
I suspect the Giants might go with a bounce-back candidate or two as their fifth starter.

The Giants still have tons of money left to spend, so they have plenty of options open to them in "Round 2" of the offseason.  I find it hard to believe that they wouldn't make one big splashy trade or signing.
Mary Ferguson
8:35
how weird is it going to be to watch Alex Cobb, join the warlock giants, shallow out his sinker, and suddenly get down ballot cy young votes in his age 34 season?
Mark P
8:35
Nobody should be surprised by this scenario.  Cobb was quietly pretty solid last year, so if he stays healthy and the Giants work their magic, look out
Who says no?
8:38
Eovaldi for McNeil
Mark P
8:38
McNeil does fit Boston's model of versatile players, but I don't think that one-for-one swap works.  The Red Sox aren't likely to be moving pitching.

It's strange how "fighting an uphill battle" and "things are going downhill" are both negative.

That is all.

Any chance Phillies can get Chapman from A's while taking on Andrus in the process? His D will be an upgrade over Didi and might lessen the prospect cost.
Mark P
8:41
There are some hurdles involved in any Andrus deal, as Steve Adams noted earlier this week....

What are the chances the angels add a starter better or safer than lorenzen or syndergaard? I’m kind of tired on these one year deals where we’re hoping a starter can rediscover themself or perform better then they ever have
Mark P
8:44
The Angels continue to be hesitant about committing a long-term deal for pitching, which strikes me as unnecessarily cautious.
8:45
If they do aim just for one- or two-year pitchers, maybe swing a trade for someone like Castillo/Mahle/Montas, with fewer question marks
Jello452
8:46
Jo Adell for Jeimer Candelario. Who says no?
Mark P
8:46
Angels.  Candelario isn't really a positional fit in Anaheim
Mike Hazen
8:46
Do I finally commit to a full rebuild and sell off all my veteran contracts/ trade assets this offseason and by the deadline or do try to continue competing while is wait for the farm to arrive?
Mark P
8:47
I may be mistaken about this, but I think Hazen is on record as saying he doesn't like the idea of a "full rebuild."  Since the D'Backs have some good players already under long-term control, a big rebuild might not be necessary, though that club absolutely needs some help, and they're facing a tough climb in the NL West

Broadcast booth question. Does Ben Wagner get a radio broadcast partner for 2022?
