‘Bama or the Dawgs on Monday night?
Mark P

I feel like Alabama is going to win easily

I’ve got about 4 guys in my starting lineup that would be DH’s on a real solid team. Would I be better off trading one of them, like Eloy, to fill a few holes like a competent 2B and a good defensive catcher?
Mark P
6:48
Dealing Eloy doesn't seem like an ideal move, though it would certainly get the ball rolling on any number of trades.

Again, I make the point that the White Sox can make things easier on themselves by spending some money.  They don't have to pay the luxury tax or even approach $200MM or anything, but Chicago is a big market.

Don't the A's seem to line up nicely in a trade with the Giants? Could you see a major deal being made between Farhan and his old boss?
Mark P
6:50
Times and front offices always change, the A's and Giants haven't made a true player-for-player trade since 1990.  So, I'd bet against a Bay Area swap

Simmons seems like he might be finished as an everyday player. If the Yankees aren't going for one of the top SS's, wouldn't it make sense to play one of their prospect SS's?
Mark P
6:53
Peraza will probably make the big leagues sometime in 2022 since he already hit Triple-A last year, but counting on him for regular production so early in his career isn't feasible.
Which is why the Yankees want a stopgap shortstop for two years at the most, to act as a bridge to Peraza and Volpe

What do you think the odds are that the Nationals move Soto in the next 3 years, rather than pay him $500M+ for 12-14 years (the years depend on how good he is over the next three).
Mark P
6:56
Soto is a special enough player that I can see the organization justifying that record contract in their minds, even if ownership has been hit-or-miss on the players they choose to spend big money on
Soto is also special enough that trading him would like a mistake on principle, unless Soto and his reps let the team know that he'll be leaving in free agency

Have you seen the Beatles Get Back documentary?
Mark P

I sure did.  Fascinating stuff

Waters, Pache, Langeliers and Muller <=== more than enough for Shane Bieber or would the Guardians want MORE !??
Mark P
7:01
The Guardians would at least think about that one, but they'd still be likely to counter (or head to another team and say "here's what Atlanta will give us, can you top it?")

But I also don't think they're at all moving Bieber.  He's controlled for three more years, and Cleveland traditionally doesn't move on their top guys until they have maybe a year and change left.  Bieber by the 2023 trade deadline might be a more feasible option

Moustakas for Grichuk, who says no?
Mark P
7:02
If the Reds kicked in some money to offset salary, I can see Toronto making that move for roster construction reasons alone.  Though, the Jays would then have to find someone who can feasibly play CF in the event of a Springer injury
Aaron
7:03
Are we going to hear about replacement players again? The idea makes me nostalgic for the 90s.
Mark P
7:03
Ugh, let's hope not.
If I want 90's nostalgia, I'll watch Frasier reruns
Roger
7:05
Should the regular season get delayed, what happens to the schedule?
Mark P
7:05
Depending on the length of the delay, the affected games could maybe be rescheduled (seven-inning doubleheaders?) or maybe canceled altogether
Bradley
7:06
Do players really not want more teams to make it to the playoffs? Or are they just saying that for leverage?
Mark P
7:07
I think the union has a valid concern over a larger playoff field equaling less spending, since teams will have more margin for error.  But I do think it's inevitable the playoffs will expand, though I hope it's 12 teams max

Patrick Corbin for Eric Hosmer, who says no?
Mark P
7:09
Corbin's AAV is higher than Hosmer's, and he is owed more in actual remaining salary than Hosmer (though the Nats' web of deferred money makes me not 100 percent sure now that works out).  So that doesn't seem like a fit for San Diego's needs, unless more players are involved on both sides
Bucco Fan

Do you see any scenario where the Pirates would take on money (Hosmer, Myers, Gregorius, etc.) to get prospects? Their current payroll is so low.
Mark P
7:11
I think I answered a similar question last week, but the fact is that the Pirates (or specifically, the Pirates ownership) don't seem eager to spend any money if they don't have to.  "Buying a prospect" would seem like a viable and even a logical strategy for the club, except for the financial roadblock

Odds Brett Garnder is a Yankee this season?
Mark P
7:12
I'll just assume Gardner will be with the Yankees forever until proven otherwise

Do you view McNeil as another Zobrist? If so shouldn't Mets keep and use him as super utility player. A nice luxury.
Mark P
7:13
Depends on what off-the-field clubhouse issues may exist (i.e. between Lindor and McNeil), but in theory, McNeil does seem like a pretty useful player to have around.  His poor 2021 season notwithstanding, he checks a lot of boxes around the diamond, while guys like Smith or Davis have more defensive questions
Todd
7:14
It’s looking like it might be close for Bonds and Clemens, yes?
Mark P
7:14
I think both will fall short.  The trend has been that Bonds and Clemens rate well amongst voters who send their ballots into Ryan Thibodaux, but the numbers drop once the full vote comes in

Twins gonna contend in 2022
Mark P
7:15
I don't love their chances.  The AL Central has gotten better overall, and the Twins still have a lot of roster questions to address
