Maybe playoff contention, but that's also assuming Suzuki make a smooth transition to MLB, Kershaw stays healthy, Gray pitches well in a new league.  Even beyond the three upgrades you suggest, I think the Rangers would need more......this was a bad team last year, don't forget.  There were plenty of holes on the roster.

Abreu stays with White Sox beyond 2022....?  agree or disagree
Mark P
1:53
Barring a major dropoff this season, I suspect he signs another extension.  Abreu is seen as a face of the franchise
NL East

Got to think Braves have the "best" chance of first to worst. Lose Freeman, rotation doesn't get better/healthy, etc. Mets got better, Marlins getting better, Phillies probably add something, just leaves the nationals to make a move.
Mark P
1:55
I'd be pretty surprised to see the Braves drop to last place.  It would either take a total injury-riddled nightmare of a season, or the rest of the division gets better to the point that a struggling Atlanta team finishes last despite 78 wins or something

What are your biggest red flags for Mac Gore? He should still be fine right?…RIGHT?
Mark P
1:58
You usually don't see a pitcher undergo what was apparently a total mechanics overhaul, so that's certainly cause for concern.  The canceled 2020 season is going to end up having an adverse impact on many prospects, and my worry is that Gore might be one of them.

Giants' most pressing need: RH OF bat or SP?
Mark P
2:00
I guess RH outfielder, just because they've already done a pretty good job of reloading their rotation.

What do you think is most likely for the Phillies - signing Bryant, signing Schwarber or signing Correa?
Mark P
2:01
Schwarber, probably.  He'd be the cheapest and the Phillies were already reportedly going hard after him pre-lockout

Ozark season 4....off the hook awesome!
Mark P
2:02
I liked the first season, though not enough to keep watching.  It struck me as a pretty average story that was being carried by great acting from the three leads, but perhaps I've missed the boat on this show.

Should I sign Kenley Jansen with the intent of trying to pull off another Kimbrel type deal at the deadline.
Mark P
2:03
Jansen makes a lot of sense for the Cubs, either as part of a team trying to compete or as a deadline trade chip.
Tampa Bay Rays First to worst
2:05
The Rays are the most likely team to go from first to worst. If Baltimore can just get to 4th place the Rays could very easily finish behind the Blue Jays, Yankees and Red Sox. I would say there is at least a decent chance the Rays finish in 4th even if Baltimore gets worse.
Mark P
2:05
You've hit upon the issue --- it's not inconceivable that the Rays finish fourth, but I have a very hard time seeing them finish behind the Orioles
Joe Montana

Who wins tomorrow’s game- Rams or Niners?
Mark P
2:06
I think the 49ers win a close game.  They've quietly dominated the Rams for the last few years

If the Astros plans are going with Pena as their opening day starter at SS, why then would Kris Bryant not be the perfect fit for the team? His versatility will be a blessing for the Astros.  With Meyers hurt, Tucker plays CF and Bryant is RF.  If Pena does not do well at SS, then Bregman can move to SS and Bryant goes to 3B. Keep in mind, both Brantley (LF) and Guriel (1B) are free agents after the season, so Bryant can slide over to one of those positions if needed.  Therefore, Astros offer Bryant 5 years / 150M... What say you?
Mark P
2:08
This idea makes some sense on paper, but I think the Astros are likelier to just look for more inexpensive fill-in types of options rather than just have Bryant on hand as a potential place-filler for everyone

the angels aren't really going to go into a season with a big payroll and the two best players in baseball and rengifo or wade at short are they?
Mark P
2:10
I'd suggest Fletcher could also be moved to shortstop, but your larger point remains.  Even getting a Nick Ahmed type (as was suggested in a recent chat) would be a very nice upgrade for the Angels, who badly need some defensive help
Phan

hey Mark,  how do you think the CBA settles this time around in regards to service time, league minimum salaries, and the tax threshold?  Doesn’t seem like the players are going to get much of what they’re hoping for this time around.  Thanks
Mark P
2:12
I think you'll see the minimum salary gradually increased, maybe after a one-time larger bump.  Same with the tax threshold --- it'll go up in some manner, maybe with a $10MM bump the first year and then smaller increases in the other years.
More Gurriel
2:13
If the OF is too crowded, why don’t the Jays just move Gurriel back to the infield? He’s a pretty versatile player… could use him like Chris Taylor. And how close is Groshans to being their 3B?
Mark P
2:15
Gurriel wasn't a good defensive infielder, which is why the Blue Jays moved him out to left field in the first place.  Groshans should be ready to debut in the majors either late this season or early in 2023, but asking him to immediately step in and help a contender is a tall order for a rookie
Guard Dog
2:15
The Guardians have a surplus of excellent middle infield prospects but desperately need help at the corner outfield positions. Which team would be a good trade partner?
Mark P
2:16
Baltimore stands out, as, the Orioles have long been trying to improve their middle infield depth at both the MLB level and minor league levels
Kate Upton
2:17
who will you guess are the starting three in the Braves outfield?
Mark P
2:17
Acuna, Duvall, and either one of Pache/Waters or a veteran player who immediately plays great as soon as Atlanta acquires him
Ken
2:18
Olson to Seattle for Emerson Hancock, Brandon Williamson, and Connor Phillips. Who says no?
Mark P
2:20
Not a bad offer but the A's would probably want someone closer to the majors, and maybe at least one position player involved.

Plus, you'd have to imagine an AL West team would have to extra to convince Oakland to move Olson within the division.
Billy Wagner
2:20
Fess up. I should be in the HOF. Right?
Mark P
2:20
Yeah, I would've had Wagner on my ballot if I'd had a HOF vote
Stan Lee
2:22
Why haven’t there been any Rizzo rumors flying around? He seems like a great add for NL teams who are most likely going to get the DH. I would love to see him sign with the Cardinals and give them a middle of the order lefty bat that they desperately need, his bat would fit extremely well and he seems to be a great guy to root for.
Mark P
2:23
I'm not sure the Cards are the ideal fit, since then you've locked Goldschmidt and Rizzo into the 1B/DH roles.  While the Cardinals could certainly use a good left-handed bat, I'd imagine they'd prefer a lefty-swinging outfielder who could spell any of the starting outfielders.
Barry Bonds
2:23
So the sports writers hated me, but will one of the special committees finally make the right decision and vote me into the HOF where I belong?
Mark P
2:25
It's going to be difficult.  The Athletic's Andrew Baggarly wrote a good piece this past week about how crowded the next "today's game" veterans committee ballot is going to be, as some great candidates aren't even going to make the short list of 10.

With that in mind, there will be enough good candidates that it'll hard for Bonds, Clemens, anyone to get the 12 of 16 votes necessary for election

Sox could use McNeil and Mets could use Kimbrel.  Obviously not straight up, but is there a framework for that?
