Please tell me this GHOST WIN is not a thing
Mark P
11:12
I like the idea, it creates an interesting challenge for the wild card team and a real advantage to the division winner.  By the MLBPA's logic, that's an advantage well-earned by winning one's division.

Plus, it creates the scenario where a player on such a wild card team is asked about the challenge his club faces, and his answer is "I ain't afraid of no ghost."
Halos
11:12
Why have the owners lacked creativity and flexibility in their proposals? It's a terrible look and it looks like the players are trying, whereas the owners aren't to sustain an agreement.
Mark P
11:13
The owners feel the CBA more or less completely benefits them, so they aren't eager to make big changes.

Are the Giants committed to starting the Joey Bart era?  I don’t see any reasonable free agent alternatives.  Any serious catcher trade candidates out there?
Mark P
11:15
Curt Casali is there for backup, and I think the Giants are ready to see what they have in Bart.  If need be, they can pivot at the trade deadline and try to bring in a catcher, but Bart is a well-regarded prospect for a reason.
Danny Ainge Blue Jays

Jays should retire Dave Stieb's number - yay or nay?
Mark P
11:18
The Jays' policy is that they only retire the numbers of HOFers, whereas the other notables in team history go on the "Level Of Excellence."

Stieb has been in the LOE for years.  However, if a future veterans committee wants to take up his Cooperstown case, I'd be on board.

11:19
After Cabrera, who has the best chance of reaching the 3,000 mark or is that all she wrote for that club?
Mark P
11:20
Cano's suspension probably ended his chances at 3000 hits but he at least has a very outside shot.  Beyond that, you're right, it's hard to make a prediction about the next Mr. 3000

As a practical matter, how many games could be “canceled” but later rescheduled to be played later in the year, so that a full 162  could be played (despite the prior assertion by MLB that any canceled games would not be made up)?
Mark P
11:23
The league has already said they're not going back to seven-inning doubleheaders, but that would be one way of making up games.  I have no idea if the calendar would support this, but maybe two weeks' worth of regular-season games could be postponed and made up within the normal schedule window?  Even two weeks might be a reach.

Do you think the Twins and Marlins would work a deal with the Twins of surplus and the fish's pitching depth?
Mark P
11:25
Seems like a good fit on paper.  In terms of a young CF type that fits the Marlins' needs, maybe Austin Martin?  Though it's hard to project where his future position might be
Splash Gordo

Do you see the Rays unloading Kiermaier and or Margot post lockout?
Mark P
11:25
One of them or Meadows, yes
Timothy
11:26
Do you think the Nationals are privately hoping Stephen Strasburg retires?
Mark P
11:26
Why would he retire and leave $175MM on the table?
Baseball
11:27
When do we see me this year?
Mark P
11:28
Well, the Triple-A season is expected to start on time.  College baseball is in full swing.

Two years later, who won the Mookie trade? Will Verdugo and Downs ever reach their potential? Will Mookie ever get past the hip injury?
Mark P
11:30
Though two years, the Dodgers are the clear winners since they have a World Series trophy on the mantle.  Not that the Sox didn't get a decent return, and frankly they probably see the luxury tax savings as a win unto themselves
To hell and back
11:31
Do you think all the owners feel the sane way or is it a collective thing?
Mark P
11:32
I'm sure all of the owners have a collective interest in limiting spending.  But, naturally the specific interests of a big-market team and a small-market team differ greatly......a CBA issue that might be a dealbreaker for one might not be a concern at all for another.
Cubs
11:35
Does anyone know what the heck their plan is? How do they rebuild yet plan to stay on the margins of contention? You almost have to take a step back, don't you? Yet I've heard Hoyer say the Cubs could compete in 2022. At least Theo was honest with us.
Mark P
11:35
In a National League where maybe seven teams might make the playoffs, being just on "the margins of contention" might be good enough to make October.
11:37
The Stroman signing indicates that the Cubs do have more up their sleeves, even if a Correa-level addition might be far-fetched.  I could see Chicago try to load up on players for one-year or two-year deals, so there's no long-term hit

Mize. Manning. Skubal. Who makes the biggest jump this year and why?
Mark P
11:38
If Skubal can cut down on the home runs, he'll suddenly look really good really quickly
CONFUSED
11:39
If a player has 2.112 years of service time at 22%, would 23% push it up to 2.116 years? I believe it's based on the percentage of players but have no way to figure it out. Can you help with a clue or two?
Mark P
11:41
The Super Two cutoff is calculated by taking a list of every player who has between 2 and 3 years of service time.  From most to least, the top 22% of those names get the Super Two designation.

I know it's very personal, but Steve answered it: Favorite reCAPTCHA imagine challenge? To me, it's tractor. Hard to miss a tractor.
Mark P

I always fail those, since I'm a robot.
Big Todd Van Papi
11:43
Does Bartolo Colons home run go down as the greatest HR from a P ever?
Mark P
11:44
I'm sure I'm forgetting some critical homer hit by a pitcher in a big postseason game.  But off the top of my head, nothing tops Colon's homer.
Paul
11:44
What do you think the new playoffs will look like
Mark P
11:45
I suspect the compromise will be 12 teams, without the "ghost win" concept.
Cubbie fan.
11:46
What is Yankees biggest need? How would you rank priorities? Shortstop, first base, center field, catcher?
Mark P
11:47
From biggest need to least, I'd rank it shortstop, catcher, center field, first base.

Since Urshela isn't a realistic everyday SS, that's the biggest need, since at least New York has other candidates for the other positions.

What roster addition(s) this off-season would put the cardinals over the top in the central?
