The Marlins get Watson falling to them in the draft, and now they'll just trade him away?
Mark P
12:28
Watson actually makes sense as a Marlins trade chip *because* he fell so far in the draft.  I wonder how much Miami even scouted Watson beyond simple due diligence, figuring he'd be gone long before they picked halfway through the first round.
12:29
icymi, Watson's surfaced as part of the Marlins/Pirates talks for Bryan Reynolds...

12:30
who are some big name free agents we could target next year?
Mark P
12:31
Baltimore's payroll commitments are so minimal that (like the Rangers this winter) they could go on an absolute spending spree for anyone, if they wished.

However, the O's have shown such an aversion to spending whatsoever during this rebuild that I think next winter is probably too soon to start thinking about them opening up the checkbook
Rafael Devers
12:32
Why haven’t I been offered an extension yet?
Mark P
12:34
I'd be surprised if the Sox didn't at least start some talks soon, since Devers is a free agent after 2023.
12:35
It'll be interesting to see what kind of numbers are floated, as the Sox haven't made a truly big extension in the Chaim Bloom era.  One would imagine Devers has shown enough to be considered a long-term cornerstone, unless the Sox don't see him as a 3B and figure first base can be filled with less-expensive talent (or if one of their young 1B are being earmarked for the spot)
Max Meyer
12:37
Why am I back in the minors?
Mark P
12:38
Meyer has barely pitched at Triple-A, so the Marlins want to give him some more prep time
It definitely feels like Meyer will make his MLB debut at some point in 2022, probably sooner than later

Expectations of Joey Bart this season? More power but less average than Posey? Man has some big shoes to fill…
Mark P
12:40
The fact that the Giants didn't do much at catcher this winter tells me that they're confident in Bart.  He won't be Posey, obviously, but I think Bart will have a nice breakout year

Will the judge extension tell whether Hal is cheap?
Mark P
12:41
I made this point in the Yankees post earlier today on MLBTR, but the Yankees (as a team rule) have rarely done extensions since Hal took over.  The last two extensions were Severino and Hicks, neither of which have worked out whatsoever, but obviously Judge is a different case
12:42
Given the Yankees' lack of track record on extensions, I'd actually lean towards Judge not getting a new deal, and him entering free agency.  Doesn't mean he wouldn't eventually re-sign in New York

Correa signs with a team that has zero chance of competeing. His he nuts? It's a silly place to showcase your talents for a long term contract. It was a ridiculous signing for his sake.
Mark P
12:46
While the Twins need pitching and their division is competitive, I don't think it's a reach to say they can make some noise this year.  2021 might have just been one of those Murphy's Law years when everything went wrong.  Heck, the Twins even had another of those seasons in 2018 and were able to bounce back pretty well.

i have a hot take for you. What’s the possibility that every division has a new winner this year? With maybe the AL central being the only exception…but I seriously think Detroit could surpass Chicago. Thinking about all of the moves that have been made, I can see a new number one in each division.
Mark P
12:48
The Dodgers, Braves, and Astros will be tough to supplant, but six new division winners is certainly a possibility.

Ok trivia fans, here's a question....since baseball adopted the three-division format, has there been a season where all six division winners differed from the previous year?
Billy
12:49
Is the trade deadline 31 July?
Mark P
12:49
This year's deadline date hasn't been officially set, and my guess is it gets changed since July 31 is a Sunday
12:50
Under the new CBA, the league can set the trade deadline anywhere between July 28 and August 3
TStats
12:50
Technically mark the dodgers would be a new division winner as the giants won last year
Mark P
12:51
Come on folks, surely you can't expect a professional baseball writer to remember ALL the little details like "who won a division" from a season as far back as 2021, right???

Ghost of Dealing Dave
12:53
I continue to haunt the Red Sox and Chaim Bloom with my Chris Sale mega extension. Would Preller deal Hosmer for Sale straight up while he's injured? Tell Chaim it reduces the CBT payroll number for the Sox.
Mark P
12:54
I've made the point before in Dombrowski's defense....it's not like John Henry woke up on morning, opened the newspaper and was surprised to learn that Sale got a $125MM extension.  Ownership has to sign off on those deals.

Not to say that the extension wasn't a misfire since the early returns aren't good.  But if you're blaming Dombrowski for Sale, you also have to give him credit for the Bogaerts extension (and, you know, the 2018 World Series)

An earlier question touched on the Field of Dreams game. Has there been thought of using one of the two remaining Negro League stadiums or even the Rockford Peach stadium since it's coming up on an anniversary of that leagues founding?
Mark P
12:55
Any of those ideas sound fantastic
I would hope the success of the Field Of Dreams encourages the league for more creative ways to stage games

What is your gut feeling?  A's staying in Oakland or moving to Las Vegas?
Mark P
12:58
I think they're ultimately going to move
12:59
But if a move happens, their lease at the Coliseum is up after 2024 if I recall correctly, so they'll have to get the ball rolling on a new city.

What is wrong with extra innings?  Why do people want to prevent them?
Mark P
1:00
I can understand players and coaches wanting to cut down on the grind of a 16-inning game or something
Jo Adell

Adell looking good in spring. How do you feel about this production carrying over to the regular season?
Mark P

I'm worried that if he plays well, it'll reduce the amount of questions in this chat by about 30%
