The Margot extension seems to end Kiermaier's tenure, right?  bWAR and fWAR view his contributions 2020 and 2021 vastly different. Will TB have to kick in $, or does he bring something back?
Mark P
10:10
It always seemed likely anyway that 2022 would be Kiermaier's last year in Tampa, unless he returns on a much smaller contract in free agency.  But, while the Rays undoubted explored every possibly Kiermaier deal on the table, they preferred the Tigers' offer for Meadows

The Marlins have some unproven but potentially good pitching… and nothing else. What do you say to fans when you refuse to spend substantial money on improving the offense?
Mark P
10:12
They did spend on Avisail and Soler, plus they got Stallings and Wendle in trades.  That's not nothing, even if more could or should be available to spend.

Plus, we can't rule out the Marlins for in-season upgrades.  This is the same team that took the plunge to get Starling Marte in 2020
Andrew

Was Meadows trade exclusively cash driven? It was a very underwhelming return for a former top 10 prospect that had a 4+ fWAR season in 2019.  If they wanted Josh Lowe on the big league roster, seems a lot better to ditch Phillips.
Mark P
10:14
Meadows has some holes in his offensive game, and the Rays might feel that he won't be able to figure out how to hit LHP, or that defensive shifts will keep stifling his bat.

Plus, don't forget how much teams value draft picks.  Landing that Comp-B pick was a big get for Tampa

Thoughts on Seiya for NL ROY?
Mark P

He's definitely a contender

How is it that all of a sudden the Twins, and Pirates among other “small market teams” have all of a sudden “found money to pay either free agents and or their own players?
Mark P
10:17
The Pirates have signed young players to extensions in the past, and the Twins didn't really spend to any unknown level for them (plus, moving Donaldson created a lot more flexibility)

Regarding Espinal he put on around 10-15 pounds of muscle over the offseason and on opening day had the highest exit velocity hit of his career so there may be another gear in there now. Could be just another best shape of his life situation that doesn't end up panning out but you never know.
Mark P
10:19
I would be absolutely delighted if Espinal ended up being a surprise breakout, but I'm also trying to be realistic about expectations.

The Brewers pitching hasn't been great. They definitely need an offensive shake up? Any predictions on their moves?
Mark P
10:21
Obligatory "it's only been a couple of games" response.

What is interesting about Milwaukee is that they won't wait around to make changes.  They got Adames pretty early last season and he ended up being one of their top performers.  If there are any deals to be found early, David Stearns will seek them out

If Anthony Santander plays solid, is he the most likely Oriole to be traded?
Mark P
10:25
Probably Mancini or Lyles, just because they're only controlled through this season.  Santander is controlled through 2024.  As we've seen, the Orioles are willing to move anyone, but in Santander's case, they might opt to get him play a full quality season to totally re-establish his value, then open his trade market up to a wider number of suitors in the offseason

Cards have enough starting pitching as is to get he them to a division win? The starting 5 looks decent, but not much depth
Mark P
10:27
The Cardinals' defense will make any pitching they have look better, and they could also go out and get some veterans in midseason as they did last year
It's basically a tradition at this point for the Cards to struggle for the first three months before really turning it on midseason and making the playoffs

It's just a good thing the Rays didn't see the PPI coming, otherwise they would have delayed Franco's promotion and walked away with the ROY in 2022.
Mark P
10:28
Franco was a special enough case that the Rays weren't going to hold him back to a ridiculous extent.
Andrew
10:29
The Rays kept all of Walls, Brujan, and Xavier Edwards. They have Greg Jones months away from being big League ready. Combined with Franco and Lowe, that's 6 middle infielders that are in AAA or above that are either top 100 prospects or likely to get MVP votes. Franco isn't getting moved.  Is Lowe? A lot of internal options.
Mark P
10:30
They'll continue to experiment with a couple of those guys as outfielders, and we shouldn't rule out a Brandon Lowe trade.  His contract doesn't really "get expensive" even by Rays standards, but still, as his price tag goes up, Tampa will have an eye towards wondering if they can replace him with a cheaper in-house option

so did Bellinger’s World Series shoulder injury totally ruin him?
Michael Scott
10:32
What happened to Cody Bellinger?
Mark P
10:34
Bellinger also didn't hit great in 2020, but that was the short year and he started to swing better come playoff time.  But yeah, the shoulder surgery looks like a pretty big turning point, and don't forget that Bellinger just had a ton of injuries in general last year

If the Giants falter by the deadline, do you see them shipping off some vets for prospects?
Mark P
10:38
If they really fall off, sure.  But again, we're now in the era of a 12-team playoff.  The Giants have enough talent that I find it hard to believe they'll be so far out of the race by July that they'd explore a serious selloff

If the A's move to Vegas, do they keep the Giants as their interleague "rival" or would it make more sense to have them hook up with the Padres and give the Giants Seattle?

Will we see less trades with more playoff teams?
Mark P
10:42
Probably not.  Teams will still be creative in moving players, looking at both their deadline needs and the bigger picture.
